    Natural Compounds: Molecular Weapons against Leukemia\u2019s

    Nowadays cancer is one of the main reasons of death all over the world and it is estimated that deaths caused by cancer will grow dramatically in the next decades. Even if chemotherapy is the election therapy for solid tumors, as well as leukemias and lymphomas, cancer treatments are in continuous evolution trying to solve the problem of resistance mainly due to low accumulation of the drug in tumor cells (MDR). Natural compounds represent a valid alternative to treat several disease and recently the scientific community focus on these natural compounds and plant metabolites with therapeutic activities and low toxicities compared with synthetic ones. A combination therapy, that join conventional chemotherapy with natural plant metabolites, is now considered a new promising strategy to overcome MDR and reduce cellular toxicity; in particular, in leukemia due to its very complex origin and development of leukemogenesis. Here, we want to summarize and update the recent applications of natural compounds in the treatment of leukemia

    The main aim of this paper is to highlight the evolution of urban and peri-urban networks in view of their use by dwellers and visitors. It considers the knowledge as a part of a hidden permanent education form, and as a prerequisite for full enjoyment of available culture, sport and health facilities. Although, the objectives of the inhabitants and tourists are very different, their basic structural needs and the underlying methodology have common characteristics. In this prospective, the central element is the ability to build networks that connect the nodes of interest, which are functional (services at various levels), cultural (historical and artistic emerging features), and leisure (dedicated sport facilities and locations). Furthermore, the paper investigates the paths and times of networks connections, providing particular attention to multipurpose trips consistence of either dwellers or tourists

    THE RECOVERY OF COMPREHENSIBLE MATHEMATICS

    The main objective is to get over the gap that exists between mathematics and common people, especially grown up people. Apart mathematical details, the problem lies in a good choice of notices (curiosity) and nice problems (play). Some historical notes about great mathematicians are presented and discussed, with explicit reference to the cases when the boundary between Nobel prize and mathematics was broken. Favourable fields are probability and operations research. Since probability tends to an excess of theory, operations research seemed to be a good choice. The Fields Medal, a kind of Nobel prize for Mathematics, was also considered, since in 2018 it was achieved by the Italian mathematician Figalli, former student of Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa. He started from an important field in the frame of Operations Research, namely Optimal Transport. This sector allows to summarize a very nice procedure for its solution, non at all obvious to be trasferred to the computer. Since mathematics is forgotten in the course of life, except for those few parts of current use, to bring the adult back into the interest of mathematics, topics related to everyday life should be presented. Operations research, and especially network optimization, provide significant but pleasing problems

    Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy Measurement of the Optical Gaps on Individual Boron Nitride Single-Walled and Multiwalled Nanotubes

    Spatially resolved electron energy loss spectroscopy experiments have been performed in an electron microscope on several individual boron nitride (BN) single-, double-, and triple-walled nanotubes, whose diameters and number of shells have been carefully measured. In the low-loss region (from 2 to 50 eV) the spectra have been analyzed within the framework of the continuum dielectric theory, leading to the conclusion of a weak influence of out-of-plane contribution to the dielectric response of the tubes. The gap has been measured to be independent of the nanotubes geometry, and close to the in-plane gap value of hexagonal BN (5.8±0.2¿¿eV)

The low and core-loss regions have been analyzed to provide by the same technique a combined information about chemical bonding in the different materials in the sample and the electronic properties of individual BN-NTs.     Ultrasound-Guided Percutaneous Tenotomy of the Long Head of Biceps Tendon in Patients with Symptomatic Complete Rotator Cuff Tear: In Vivo Non-contRolled Prospective Study

    Background: We prospectively tested technical feasibility and clinical outcome of percutaneous ultrasound-guided tenotomy of long head of biceps tendon (LHBT). Methods: We included 11 patients (6 women; age: 73 \ub1 8.6 years) with symptomatic full-thickness rotator cuff tear and intact LHBT, in whom surgical repair was not possible/refused. After ultrasound-guided injection of local anesthetic, the LHBT was cut with a scalpel under continuous ultrasound monitoring until it became no longer visible. Pain was recorded before and at least six months after procedure. An eight-item questionnaire was administered to patients at follow-up. Results: A median of 4 tendon cuts were needed to ensure complete tenotomy. Mean procedure duration was 65 \ub1 5.7 s. Mean length of skin incision was 5.8 \ub1 0.6 mm. Pre-tenotomy VAS score was 8.2 \ub1 0.7, post-tenotomy VAS was 2.8 \ub1 0.6 (p < 0.001). At follow-up, 5/11 patients were very satisfied, 5/11 satisfied and 1/11 neutral. One patient experienced cramping and very minimal pain in the biceps. Six patients had still moderate shoulder pain, 1/11 minimal pain, 2/11 very minimal pain, while 2/11 had no pain. No patients had weakness in elbow flexion nor limits of daily activities due to LHBT. One patient showed Popeye deformity. All patients would undergo ultrasound-guided tenotomy again. Conclusion: ultrasound-guided percutaneous LHBT tenotomy is technically feasible and effective

    In-capillary immuno-preconcentration with circulating bio-functionalized magnetic beads for capillary electrophoresis

    This study reports on the conception of magneto-Capillary Electrophoresis (magneto-CE), an approach integrating immuno-capture on circulating bio-functionalized magnetic beads into a unique capillary for preconcentration and electrokinetic separation. This hybrid mode is an evolution of in-capillary magnetic bead-based operation from static cluster format to dynamic configuration where beads are allowed to controllably circulate inside a CE capillary for interaction improvement. To implement the magneto-CE operation, a purpose-made instrument was constructed, allowing visual observation of the movement of the magnetic beads. We applied a new methodological strategy for determination of the amyloid beta peptide (A beta 1-42), which is as an established biomarker for molecular diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease (AD). The methodology is based on magneto-immuno-capture of fluorescently labeled A beta 1-42 followed by a chemical elution with a basic solution prior to CE separation with laser induced fluorescent (LIF) detection. The superiority of this dynamic configuration of magneto-CE was demonstrated for this target analyte, with sample pretreatment and separation being performed in-capillary without any delay in between and without any waste of pretreated sample, which otherwise would not be the case with offline/batch-wise operation.
