    Surface doping in T6/ PDI-8CN2 Heterostructures investigated by transport and photoemission measurements

    In this paper, we discuss the surface doping in sexithiophene (T6) organic field-effect transistors by PDI-8CN2. We show that an accumulation heterojunction is formed at the interface between the organic semiconductors and that the consequent band bending in T6 caused by PDI-8CN2 deposition can be addressed as the cause of the surface doping in T6 transistors. Several evidences of this phenomenon have been furnished both by electrical transport and photoemission measurements, namely the increase in the conductivity, the shift of the threshold voltage and the shift of the T6 HOMO peak towards higher binding energies.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure

    The Emerging Trends of Renewable Energy Communities’ Development in Italy

    Increasing concerns over climate change and energy poverty have triggered the transition toward a decentralized energy system through the widespread adoption of renewable energy technologies. Although this transition was led, over past decades, mainly by major investors and large industrial players, citizens and local authorities are increasingly playing an active role in delivering clean energy investments. In particular, the current European Renewable Energy Directive introduced Renewable Energy Communities (RECs), which allow citizens to collectively organize their participation in the energy market, leading to a more distributed renewable energy system and new forms of sustainable, collaborative, and democratic economies. RECs currently under implementation show differences among European countries due to the different national contexts. A literature review exploring the peculiar Italian regulatory framework on RECs and its recent evolution has been carried out to identify available national and regional financial support mechanisms, barriers, and emerging trends in the diffusion of RECs across the country. The paper reviews and describes three main approaches that emerged in the development of RECs in Italy, discussing their strengths, and limitations. In addition, it provides a brief comparison of the regulatory framework in different European countries, highlighting the distinctive features of the Italian experience. Although the development of RECs in Italy involved a combination of both public and private initiatives, the leading role of local authorities as promoters and aggregators of RECs is evident. This role helps preserve the social impact of RECs but might slow down their implementation due to bureaucratic issues often linked to public procedures and procurement processes, as well as the lack of sufficient expertise within local authorities

    UBEM's archetypes improvement via data-driven occupant-related schedules randomly distributed and their impact assessment

    In Urban Building Energy Models (UBEMs), buildings are usually modelled via archetypes describing occupants’ behaviour via fixed schedules. This research (i) creates data-driven schedules for electric use and occupancy from smart meter readings randomly distributed in the model to improve residential archetypes, (ii) assesses the impact of these schedules on UBEMs’ energy results at different temporal resolutions and spatial scales. The novel assessment procedure exploits integrated heat maps based on coefficients of variation of the root means square error (CVRMSE). The outcomes show that differences in energy needs, with randomized schedules, range based on temporal and spatial aggregation. Yearly, for the entire neighbourhood, heating and cooling energy needs, and electric uses are estimated -2%, +1%, and +18% compared to the base case. The outputs show that, when simulations are focused on the entire district, fixed schedules can be enough to describe energy patterns. However, if the simulation is focused on small groups of buildings (e.g., 5 or fewer), randomising the schedules can create variability in the model in terms of electric use and occupancy among buildings characterized by the same archetype. The followed methodology can be exploited also with larger databases and eventually verified with also other types of data

    Doubling the Mechanical Properties of Spider Silk by C60 Supersonic Molecular Beam Epitaxy

    Spider silk is one of the most fascinating natural materials, owing to its outstanding mechanical properties. In fact, it is able to combine usually self-excluding properties, like strength and toughness that synthetic fibers fail to replicate. Here, we report a method to further enhance the already excellent mechanical properties of spider's silk, producing nanocomposite fibers where the matrix of spider silk is reinforced with C60 molecules. These are deposited by Supersonic Molecular Beam Epitaxy (SuMBE) and are able to efficiently interact with silk, as evidenced by XPS analysis. As a consequence, upon proper adjustment of the fullerene kinetic energy, the treated fibers show improved strength, Young's modulus and toughness

    Is Eriophyes mali Nalepa present in Italy?

    In the last few years, blistering symptoms were observed on apple plants in commercial orchards. Blisters are commonly found on apple leaves as well as on small fruits. This symptom is compatible with that described for apple blister mites belonging to the genus Eriophyes (Eriophyidae). To assess the identity of the etiological agent, leaf blisters and buds of symptomatic apple and, as a control, pear plants were examined under the dissection microscope and eriophyoid mites were collected. Specimens were examined using both molecular and morphological approaches. The analysis of sequences confirmed that eriophyoid mites collected from symptomatic apple and pear plants are genetically different.     Clinical, biochemical and molecular characterization of prosaposin deficiency

    Prosaposin (PSAP) deficiency is an ultra-rare, fatal infantile lysosomal storage disorder (LSD) caused by variants in the PSAP gene, with 7 subjects reported so far. Here, we provide the clinical, biochemical and molecular characterization of two additional PSAP deficiency cases. Lysoplex, a targeted resequencing approach was utilized to identify the variant in the first patient, while quantification of plasma lysosphingolipids (lysoSLs), assessed by liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) and brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), followed by Sanger sequencing allowed to attain diagnosis in the second case. Functional studies were carried out on patients' fibroblast lines to explore the functional impact of variants. The two patients were homozygous for two different truncating PSAP mutations (c.895G>T, p.Glu299*; c.834_835delGA, p.Glu278Aspfs*27). Both variants led to a complete lack of processed transcript. LC-MS/MS and brain MRI analyses consistently provided a distinctive profile in the two children. Quantification of specific plasma lysoSLs revealed elevated levels of globotriaosylsphingosine (lysoGb3) and glucosylsphingosine (GlSph), and accumulation of autophagosomes, due to a decreased autophagic flux, was observed.     Genome-scaled phylogeny of Saccharomyces cerevisiae from spontaneous must fermentations

    Modern winemakers commonly inoculate selected S. cerevisiae strains in must to obtain controlled fermentations and reproducible products. However, wine has been produced for thousands of years using spontaneous fermentations from wild strains, a practice that is experiencing a revival among small wine producers. Despite the widespread usage of such strains in the past, there is much to know about their ecology, evolution and functional potential. For example, the reciprocal affinities of these strains within the S. cerevisiae phylogeny have yet to be discovered, as well as the degree of their biodiversity and their impact on wine terroir. To fill this knowledge gap, we aim at characterising at strain level the S. cerevisiae present in spontaneously fermented musts sampled across Italy. We set up a protocol based on polyphenols-removing prewashes, followed by whole-genome shotgun sequencing at a depth of 5Gb of DNA per sample. We performed both an assembly-free analysis to reconstruct the strain-level phylogeny of S. cerevisiae strains using the species-specific-marker based StrainPhlAn, and the reconstruction of Metagenome-Assembled Genomes of these strains for downstream functional analyses. To plan conservation acts in a scenario of continuous climate change, we aim at isolating and maintaining strains of interest.     Erhöhte HumusvorrÀte in einem siebenjÀhrigen Agroforstsystem in der Zentralschweiz

    Moderne Agroforstsysteme haben das Potenzial, eine produktive Landwirtschaft mit verbesserter Erreichung der «Umweltziele Landwirtschaft» zu verbinden. Diese Systeme werden in der Schweiz allerdings erst seit kurzem von wenigen Landwirten getestet, daher liegen bisher kaum Daten zu den Umweltwirkungen von modernen Agroforstsystemen vor. In dieser Studie untersuchten wir, wie sich die HumusvorrĂ€te in einem siebenjĂ€hrigen Agroforstsystem in der Zentralschweiz verĂ€ndert haben. Unsere Resultate zeigen, dass bereits nach sieben Jahre eine substanzielle Humusanreicherung (+18 %) in der Baumreihe verglichen mit der kultivierten FlĂ€che zu beobachten ist. Erstaunlicherweise beschrĂ€nkte sich die Humusanreicherung nicht nur auf den Oberboden, sondern konnte auch bis in eine Tiefe von 60 cm nachgewiesen werden. Eine erste SchĂ€tzung der jĂ€hrlichen Humusanreicherung in der untersuchten Agroforstparzelle betrĂ€gt 0,86 t Kohlenstoff pro Hektare und Jahr beziehungsweise 91 kg Stickstoff pro Hektare und Jahr fĂŒr die Bodentiefe 0–60 cm. Die Magnitude dieser ersten SchĂ€tzung zeigt, dass die weitere Erforschung der Humusdynamik in Agroforstsystemen aus Sicht des Boden-, Klima- und GewĂ€sserschutzes von grosser Bedeutung ist

    Choroidal vascularity map in unilateral central serous chorioretinopathy: A comparison with fellow and healthy eyes

    Background: To map the choroidal vascularity index and compare two eyes in patients with unilateral central serous chorioretinopathy (CSCR). Methods: This was a retrospective, observa-tional study performed in patients with unilateral CSCR. Choroidal thickness (CT) and Choroidal vascularity index (CVI) were measured and mapped in various zones according to the early treatment diabetic retinopathy (ETDRS) grid. Results: A total of 20 CSCR patients (20 study and 20 fellow eyes) were included in the study. Outer nasal region CT was seen to be significantly lower than central CT (p = 0.042) and inner nasal CT (p = 0.007); outer ring CT was significantly less than central (p = 0.04) and inner ring (p = 0.01) CT in CSCR eyes. On potting all the CVI values against the corresponding CT values, a positive correlation was seen in CSCR eyes (r = 0.54, p < 0.01), which was slightly weaker in fellow eyes (r = 0.3, p < 0.01) and a negative correlation was seen in healthy eyes (r = −0.262, p < 0.01). Conclusions: Correlation between CVI and CT was altered in CSCR eyes as compared to fellow and normal eyes with increasing CVI towards the center of the macula and superiorly in CSCR eyes
