Organized by Graduate School of Informatics, Kyoto University ; JSPS Bangkok Liaison Office ; Japanese Society of Bio-logging Science ; Informatics Research Center for Development of Knowledge Society InfrastructureDecember 13-15, 2004, Imperial Tara Hotel, Bangkok, ThailandThe diel activity of red tilefish Branchiostegus japonicus was studied using two different methods : analysis of biotelemetry records and video observation. We have acquired the biotelemetry tracking records of the red tilefish which were released in Maizuru Bay and tracked from January 2003 to February 2004. The records ware compared to the time of sunrise and sunset, the duration of sunshine, and the lunar cycle, which may influence on light conditions. Whilst the fish showed diel activity, the fish changed their behaviors along with the time of sunrise and sunset; the fish probably moved out of their burrows in the daytime and retreated into the burrows at night. We could not find a clear relationship between the behavior and the other two factors. In the laboratory, the behavior of one hatchery-reared individual was recorded by video for five days in the experimental tank where the light condition changed periodically over 24 hours. The fish was more active in the light periods (550 lx) compared to in the dark periods (0 lx). Since the results from the two methods probably compliment one another, further experiments using the two methods will reveal the detailed behavior of red tilefish

Novel oxidation process of hydrogenated amorphous silicon utilizing nitrous oxide plasma

金沢大学理工研究域電子情報通信学系A novel oxidation process in hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) using nitrous oxide (N2O) plasma was studied in detail for the first time. The N2O-plasma oxidized a-Si:H has an excellent interface whose interfacial defect density is largely reduced compared with the O 2-plasma oxidized a-Si:H. It was elucidated that this oxide layer has almost stoichiometric composition and contains a small amount of N piling up at the interface between the oxide layer and a-Si:H layer. It also turned out that this process has less ion damage than the O2-plasma oxidation process. The reason for the reduction of the interfacial defect density is attributed to the presence of N at the interface and/or less ion damage in this process

Interfacial neutral- and charged-dangling-bond densities between hydrogenated amorphous silicon and hydrogenated amorphous silicon nitride in top nitride and bottom nitride structures

金沢大学理工研究域電子情報通信学系The bilayer structures composed of hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) and hydrogenated amorphous silicon nitride (a-Si3N4:H) are prepared on fused-quartz substrates and their interfacial Si dangling bonds (DBs) are evaluated by electron spin resonance (ESR). The ESR study reveals that the bottom nitride (BN) structure (a-Si:H/a-Si3N4:H/fused quartz) has a smaller amount of neutral DBs in the interface than the top nitride (TN) structure (a-Si3N4:H/a-Si:H/fused quartz). The photoconductivity measurements also support this finding. A larger amount of charged DBs in the interface, however, exist in the BN structure than in the TN structure. The larger amount of interfacial neutral DBs in the TN structure is likely to be caused by the UV irradiation from the plasma during the deposition of a-Si3N4:H layer.© 1995 American Institute of Physics

    Spin-gap formation due to spin-Peierls instability in π-orbital-ordered NaO2

We have investigated the low-temperature magnetism of sodium superoxide (NaO2), in which spin, orbital, and lattice degrees of freedom are closely entangled. The magnetic susceptibility shows anomalies at T1 = 220 K and T2 = 190 K, which correspond well to the structural phase transition temperatures, and a sudden decrease below T3 = 34 K. At 4.2 K, the magnetization shows a clear stepwise anomaly around 30 T with a large hysteresis. In addition, the muon spin relaxation experiments indicate no magnetic phase transition down to T = 0.3 K. The inelastic neutron scattering spectrum exhibits magnetic excitation with a finite energy gap. These results confirm that the ground state of NaO2 is a spin-singlet state. To understand this ground state in NaO2, we performed Raman scattering experiments. All the Raman-active libration modes expected for the marcasite phase below T2 are observed. Furthermore, we find that several new peaks appear below T3. This directly evidences the low crystal symmetry, namely, the presence of the phase transition at T3.We conclude that the singlet ground state of NaO2 is due to the spin-Peierls instability

Hepatitis E Virus Transmission from Wild Boar Meat

We investigated a case of hepatitis E acquired after persons ate wild boar meat. Genotype 3 hepatitis E virus (HEV) RNA was detected in both patient serum and wild boar meat. These findings provided direct evidence of zoonotic foodborne transmission of HEV from a wild boar to a human

A note on karyotypes of Sorex caecutiens (Mammalia, Insectivora) from Cheju Island, Korea

Karyotypes of Sorex caecutiens from Cheju Island of Korea were examined with conventional staining and G-banding by trypsin treatment stained with Giemsa (GTG). The diploid and fundamental autosomal arm numbers were 42 and 66, respectively. The autosomal complement in the karyotype comprised six pairs of metacentrics, seven pairs of submetacentrics or subtelocentrics, and seven pairs of acrocentrics. The X was a largest acrocentric chromosome, and the Y was a small subtelocentric chromosome. Chromosomal constitutions and G-banding pattern of S. caecutiens from Cheju Island were essentially identical to those reported for S. shinto from Honshu Island, Japan. This similarity may indicate the ancestral character of the monophyletic S. caecutiens/shinto group
