This paper presents an analysis of Slovenian deverbal external argument nominalizations in a syntactic approach, where the focus is on Slovenian agentive and instrumental deverbal nominalizations in -(V)lec, the most numerous and productive class in the language according to Stramljič Breznik (1999). It is proposed that these nominals fall in three distinct classes according to the type of the Aspect head found in the nominalization: i) episodic eventive nominals, ii) dispositional eventive nominals (both denoting animate agents) and iii) functional nominals (denoting instruments and humans in professional or temporary functions). The last type is newly introduced, as English and French-based approaches such as Alexiadou and Schäfer (2010) and Roy and Soare (2014) cannot accommodate Slovenian data relating to the presence and properties of the genitive objects found in Slovenian functional nominals.Cilj je ovoga rada predložiti analizu slovenskih agentivnih i instrumentalnih glagolskih poimeničenja sintaktičkim pristupom, kako bi se pridonijelo međujezičnom razumijevanju tih imenica. Prethodne analize, temeljene uglavnom na engleskom i francuskom korpusu, ne mogu se primijeniti na slovenske primjere (npr. Rappaport Hovav i Levin 1992; Alexiadou i Schäfer 2010; Roy i Soare 2014.). Obiskovalec razstav ‘visitor of exhibitions’).

On the syntax of ditransitive sentences in Slovenian

In this paper we discuss Slovenian ditransitive sentences with respect to the two possible word orders of the objects found with neutral intonation, DAT≫ACC and ACC≫DAT. We follow the idea in the Gračanin-Yuksek (2006) paper on Croatian that these two word orders instantiate different structures. In Slovenian, the DAT≫ACC order has an applicative structure (either high or low), while the ACC≫DAT is a prepositional dative construction. The applicative analysis provides a novel argument for this type of analysis. Other supporting arguments examined are scope properties, binding of possessives, the possibility of the causative reading, non-contrastive focus and heavy NP shift, and properties of idioms

Word-Formation Rules in Slovenian Agentive Deverbal Nominalization: A Psycholinguistic Study Based on Pseudo-Words

    Get PDF
In this paper we investigate the status of various word-formation rules relating to the derivation of the agentive deverbal nominalization in Slovenian by examining the speakers' perception of pseudo-words that violate these rules. The experiment, based on Manouilidou's (2007) investigation of Modern Greek, includes 20 native speakers of Slovenian. The results show that, contrary to Greek speakers, native speakers of Slovenian make a clear line between pseudo-words that violate word-formation rules of Slovenian and words that do not, but that they do not differentiate between pseudo-words with different types of violations, equally rejecting all pseudo words with violations

O GLAGOLSKEM VIDU PRI IZPELJAVI SAMOSTALNIKOV ZA POIMENOVANJE DEJANJA IN VRŠILCA DEJANJA V SLOVENŠČINI

The paper deals with Slovenian deverbal nominalizations that denote events (gerunds in -je) and agents of events (agentive nominalizations in -ec), where special attention is paid to aspectual restrictions on the base. The paper tries to highlight the state of the aspect-related derivational rules in the contemporary Slovene language by analyzing data from the Slovene Literary Language Dictionary (Slovar slovenskega knjižnega jezika) and the corpus Gigafida.Članek obravnava samostalniške izpeljanke iz glagolskih podstav za poimenovanje dejanja (glagolnik na -je) in vršilca dejanja (na -ec) v slovenščini, pri čemer je posebna pozornost namenjena omejitvam glede glagolskega vida podstave. Članek poskuša osvetliti, kakšno je stanje omenjenih pravil v sodobnem slovenskem jeziku, pri čemer analizira podatke, zbrane v Slovarju slovenskega knjižnega jezika (SSKJ) in podatkovni bazi korpusa Gigafida

Thesis (Ph. D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Linguistics and Philosophy, February 2003.Includes bibliographical references (p. 169-174).This dissertation is a study of word structure showing that words exhibit the syntactic phenomenon of phase-by-phase Spell-Out, Chomsky (2001), Marantz (2001). The analysis of data from English and Slovenian indicates that the syntactic structure in word formation, specifically, the existence of phases at the word level, is necessary to make generalizations about the meaning and stress properties of words in these two languages. This result gives support to a theory of morphology that treats word formation as occurring in the Syntax component, following the same rules for syntactic phrase formation, such as Distributed Morphology, Halle and Marantz (1993), Marantz (1997). In Chapter 1 the basic ideas of Distributed Morphology are laid out. In Chapter 2 the central proposal of this dissertation is presented: category-forming phrases such as little v, n and a constitute Spell-Out domains, i.e. phases, at the word level. The idea is argued for with the example of English syllabification and schwa-insertion, showing that syllabification properties of derived words and the predictability of their meaning do not follow exclusively from diacritic markings on derivational affixes, but are reflexes of both idiosyncratic properties of affixes and of the syntax in which they are found. Chapter 3 deals with the interaction of stress assignment and the syntax of words in English, arguing that stress and vowel quality in English can be diagnostic of Spell-Out domains within words and that in turn syntactic domains predict the Spell-Out. Chapter 4 is an analysis of Slovenian participial nominalizations. It is first shown that these nominalizations are truly examples of nominalizing heads attaching to participial forms.(cont.) And second, it is argued that their Spell-Out proceeds in phases defined by category-forming heads with the cyclic Spell-Out reflected in their stress pattern. Chapter 5 is a study of the stress patterns in Slovenian verbal environments and the interaction of stress and structure in these environments. The stress patterns are captured by positing two types of stress retraction rules - the phonological ones and those referring to the syntactic structure.by Tatjana Marvin.Ph.D

Prepričevalna moč sodobnega političnega in medijskega diskurza

Risk portfolio on modern finance has become increasingly technical, requiring the use of sophisticated mathematical tools in both research and practice. Since companies cannot insure themselves completely against risk, as human incompetence in predicting the future precisely that written in Al-Quran surah Luqman verse 34, they have to manage it to yield an optimal portfolio. The objective here is to minimize the variance among all portfolios, or alternatively, to maximize expected return among all portfolios that has at least a certain expected return. Furthermore, this study focuses on optimizing risk portfolio so called Markowitz MVO (Mean-Variance Optimization). Some theoretical frameworks for analysis are arithmetic mean, geometric mean, variance, covariance, linear programming, and quadratic programming. Moreover, finding a minimum variance portfolio produces a convex quadratic programming, that is minimizing the objective function ðð¥with constraintsð ð 𥠥 ðandð´ð¥ = ð. The outcome of this research is the solution of optimal risk portofolio in some investments that could be finished smoothly using MATLAB R2007b software together with its graphic analysis
