    Galaxy Mergers with Adaptive Mesh Refinement: Star Formation and Hot Gas Outflow

    In hierarchical structure formation, merging of galaxies is frequent and known to dramatically affect their properties. To comprehend these interactions high-resolution simulations are indispensable because of the nonlinear coupling between pc and Mpc scales. To this end, we present the first adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) simulation of two merging, low mass, initially gas-rich galaxies (1.8e10 Ms each), including star formation and feedback. With galaxies resolved by ~2e7 total computational elements, we achieve unprecedented resolution of the multiphase interstellar medium, finding a widespread starburst in the merging galaxies via shock-induced star formation. The high dynamic range of AMR also allows us to follow the interplay between the galaxies and their embedding medium depicting how galactic outflows and a hot metal-rich halo form.     Synaptic regulation of the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis and its modulation by glucocorticoids and stress

    Dysregulation of the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis has been implicated in a range of affective and stress-related disorders. The regulatory systems that control HPA activity are subject to modulation by environmental influences, and stressful life events or circumstances can promote subsequent HPA dysregulation. The brain is a major regulator of the HPA axis, and stress-induced plasticity of the neural circuitry involved in HPA regulation might constitute an etiological link between stress and the development of HPA dysregulation. This review focuses on the synaptic regulation of neuroendocrine corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) neurons of the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus, which are the cells through which the brain predominantly exerts its influence on the HPA axis. CRH neuronal activity is largely orchestrated by three neurotransmitters: GABA, glutamate, and norepinephrine. We discuss our current understanding of the neural circuitry through which these neurotransmitters regulate CRH cell activity, as well as the plastic changes in this circuitry induced by acute and chronic stress and the resultant changes in HPA function

    Reactions from family of origin to the disclosure of lesbian motherhood via donor insemination

    Most studies of planned lesbian motherhood via donor insemination (DI) have sampled lesbian mothers in individualistic societies where adults have relatively distant connection to their family of origin. Our study examined the experiences of biological and non-biological lesbian mothers in five families who had children through DI after disclosing their motherhood status to their family networks in Portugal, a familistic society. The first theme identified by thematic analysis, “But why do you want to have a child?” encapsulated the reactions of biological mothers’ family of origin to the announcement of motherhood. Disclosure was mostly met by a shocked response in the extended family, rooted in the belief that lesbian women should not have children. The second theme, “But you weren’t pregnant, how is this your child?” summarized the reactions of non-biological mothers’ family of origin to the disclosure of motherhood status as they considered refusing to recognize their grandchild in the absence of biological connection. Prejudice against lesbian-mother family formation was associated with the specific intersection of lesbianism and motherhood, but relationships between the mothers and their families were largely repaired because of familistic values

    Follow-up monitoring in a cat with leishmaniosis and coinfections with Hepatozoon felis and ‘Candidatus Mycoplasma haemominutum’

    Case summary A 6-year-old female neutered domestic shorthair cat from Cyprus was presented with multiple ulcerated skin nodules. Cytology and histopathology of the lesions revealed granulomatous dermatitis with intracytoplasmic organisms, consistent with amastigotes of Leishmania species. Biochemistry identified a mild hyperproteinaemia. Blood extraction and PCR detected Leishmania species, Hepatozoon species and ‘Candidatus Mycoplasma haemominutum’ (CMhm) DNA. Subsequent sequencing identified Hepatozoon felis. Additionally, the rRNA internal transcribed spacer 1 locus of Leishmania infantum was partially sequenced and phylogeny showed it to cluster with species derived from dogs in Italy and Uzbekistan, and a human in France. Allopurinol treatment was administered for 6 months. Clinical signs resolved in the second month of treatment with no deterioration 8 months post-treatment cessation. Quantitative PCR and ELISA were used to monitor L infantum blood DNA and antibody levels. The cat had high L infantum DNA levels pretreatment that gradually declined during treatment but increased 8 months post-treatment cessation. Similarly, ELISA revealed high levels of antibodies pretreatment, which gradually declined during treatment and increased slightly 8 months post-treatment cessation. The cat remained PCR positive for CMhm and Hepatozoon species throughout the study. There was no clinical evidence of relapse 24 months post-treatment. Relevance and novel information To our knowledge, this is the first clinical report of a cat with leishmaniosis with H felis and CMhm coinfections. The high L infantum DNA levels post-treatment cessation might indicate that although the lesions had resolved, prolonged or an alternative treatment could have been considere

    Contrast Mechanisms for the Detection of Ferroelectric Domains with Scanning Force Microscopy

    We present a full analysis of the contrast mechanisms for the detection of ferroelectric domains on all faces of bulk single crystals using scanning force microscopy exemplified on hexagonally poled lithium niobate. The domain contrast can be attributed to three different mechanisms: i) the thickness change of the sample due to an out-of-plane piezoelectric response (standard piezoresponse force microscopy), ii) the lateral displacement of the sample surface due to an in-plane piezoresponse, and iii) the electrostatic tip-sample interaction at the domain boundaries caused by surface charges on the crystallographic y- and z-faces. A careful analysis of the movement of the cantilever with respect to its orientation relative to the crystallographic axes of the sample allows a clear attribution of the observed domain contrast to the driving forces respectively.Comment: 8 pages, 8 figure

    Study of Drain Injected Breakdown Mechanisms in AlGaN/GaN-on-SiC HEMTs

    Breakdown mechanism in 0.25- μm gate length AlGaN/GaN-on-SiC iron doped high electron mobility transistors (HEMTs) with background carbon is investigated through the drain current injection technique. The measurement results reveal that it can be divided into two distinct stages according to the gate voltage levels. The first stage of the measured drain injected breakdown is mainly due to the initiation of the punchthrough process under the gate, and the second stage of breakdown is associated with the potential barrier between the unintentionally doped (UID) GaN and the Fe doped p-type GaN buffer layer which also has a higher carbon density. The electroluminescence (EL) results suggest that the first stage shows uniform punchthrough current flow, but localized leakage current flow associated with a snapback breakdown mechanism replaces the uniform punchthrough current flow and dominates the second stage. A 2D-TCAD simulation has been implemented and shows the current paths under uniform flow conditions
