The territory along the coast north-west of Ro me, still well preserved; in the Etruscan period was for the most under Caere control; it had the three important ports. The territory of Caere has been analyzed for a long time now, through an historical-topographic analytical study of the traces of archaeological remains. The research has been carried out by use of historical and recent aerial photographs and glass slides, last but not least the contribution of the monitoring aerial flights operated with the Carabinieri Helicopter Group of Pratica di Mare

Line-Shaped Illumination: A Promising Configuration for a Flexible Two-Photon Microscopy Setup

    Get PDF
An innovative two-photon microscope exploiting a line-shaped illumination has been recently devised and then implemented. Such configuration allows to carry out a real-time detection by means of standard CCD cameras and is able to maintain the same resolution as commonly used point-scanning devices, thus overcoming what is usually regarded as the main limitation of linescanning microscopes. Here, we provide an overview of the applications in which this device has been tested and has proved to be a flexible and efficient tool, namely imaging of biological samples, in-depth sample reconstruction, two-photon spectra detection, and dye cross-section measurements. These results demonstrate that the considered setup is promising for future developments in many areas of research and applications

Supercontinuum generation by higher-order mode excitation in a photonic crystal fiber

    Get PDF
We describe an experiment in which a train of femtosecond pulses is coupled into a photonic crystal fiber (PCF) by means of an offset pumping technique that can selectively excite either the mode LP(01) or LP(11) or LP(21). The PCF presents a wide range of wavelengths in which the fundamental mode experiences normal dispersion, whereas LP(11) and LP(21) propagate in the anomalous dispersion regime, generating a supercontinuum based on the soliton fission mechanism. We find that the existence of a cut-off wavelength for the higher-order modes makes the spectral broadening asymmetrical. This latter effect is particularly dramatic in the case of the LP(21) mode, in which, by using a pump wavelength slightly below cut-off, the spectral broadening occurs only on the blue side of the pump wavelength. Our experimental results are successfully compared to numerical solutions of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation

Direct costs of glaucoma: Relationship between cost and severity of the disease

o estimate the direct medical costs associated with the management of patients with primary open-angle glaucoma and to compare the costs of patients according to the degree of severity. A longitudinal retrospective study was carried out using all patients with primary open-angle glaucoma that recorded follow-up from May 2010 to June 2013 at the Hospital Privado de Córdoba. We estimated the cost of the disease from the perspectives of the institution, with a bottom-up approach. Results: The three-year follow-up after treatment of 104 patients revealed that the average cost of care for a patient with primary open-angle glaucoma was US2746±1560.Thefirstyearoftreatmentwassignificantlymoreexpensivethansubsequentones(US2746 ± 1560. The first year of treatment was significantly more expensive than subsequent ones (US1100–810810–827). Cost was related to the degree of severity of glaucoma; patients in “Stage 0” had significantly lower costs than those in other groups (Kruskal–Wallis test, p < 0.01). This was a consequence of lower costs associated with medication and a lower percentage of patients undergoing surgery. The direct medical costs of a patient with primary open-angle glaucoma vary according to the severity of their disease and the year of treatment. We found that costs increased with disease severity, but decreased over time.Fil: Real, Juan Pablo. Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas. Double concentric craniotomy: Safe and effective technique to achieve an en bloc resection of tumor involving both skull and duraa

    Get PDF
AbstractIntroductionMany tumors can involve the skull. Meningiomas are one of the most common intracranial neoplasms and invasion of the bone was described in 49% of cases. Other neoplastic lesions that can arise in bone, or involve it, are metastases, hemangiomas, aggressive cutis carcinomas and sarcomas. Radical excision is the golden standard of treatment but elevating a bone flap when the tumor involves both the skull and the dura could represent a technical challenge.Presentation of caseWe report the technical details of our approach to remove a meningioma involving both skull and dura in a man aged 45. Patient underwent gross total excision and cranioplasty with PEEK custom made prothesis (Synthes™).DiscussionWe describe a double concentric craniotomy (DCC) technique where the tumor involving the bone is before left in situ, exposing normal dura, to perform afterwards en-bloc excision with minimal traction of brain surface.ConclusionDCC is a safe and effective technique to remove tumor involving both skull and dural structures under direct vision
