    Clothing fashion design students' workplace learning experiences in a university of technology in Zimbabwe : towards an enhanced workplace learning role

    The focus of this study was to explore Clothing Fashion Design students’ workplace learning experiences at one university of technology in Zimbabwe. Underpinned by Kolb’s (1984) experiential learning theory, the study was located in the interpretivist research paradigm and followed a qualitative research approach, which utilised a descriptive case study design. The research sample was purposively drawn from third year Clothing Fashion Design students on workplace learning, university lecturers and workplace mentors. It included nine third year students, six workplace mentors and six University lecturers. Two major methods were employed to collect data namely; in-depth face–to-face individual interviews with students, university lecturers and workplace mentors and document analysis as a secondary method of data collection method. The data were analysed for content using thematic data analysis technique. Major findings of the study are that third year Clothing Fashion Design students at the University under study applied knowledge and skills learnt from University in Pattern Design, Garment Cutting and Making, Fashion Illustration, Fashion marketing and Retailing and Communication Skills. However, they did not design new patterns neither were they guided in Fashion Illustration since these were not done in industry as mentors lacked knowledge in these critical areas. In garment cutting and making they did not use specialised machinery due to the scarcity of such machinery and in other cases limited access. Knowledge and skills acquired from workplace learning included pattern design, garment cutting and making, fashion quality management and fashion marketing and retailing. Students did not gain skills in fashion designing and use of specialised machinery since most industries had no such machinery. Students also learnt to value time and put emphasis on production of quality products at the workplace. Dress was also valued but not by all the students since it was not uniformly considered in all industries. The factors that hindered workplace learning included strikes by mentors, shortage of material resources such as fabrics, under qualified mentors, sexual harassment and improper supervision, financial challenges and inadequacy of time to attend to university academic work. Factors that promoted workplace learning included assistance by mentors, availability of basic resources for use, good student-mentor relationships and self- motivation. Findings also reflected the guidance that was offered to students by lecturers and workplace mentors which included preparation of students for workplace learning, discipline, counselling and guidance in research projects and in practical work. Support that was offered to students by lecturers and workplace mentors included assessment, moral support, student welfare and, in some cases material support. There was very little of financial support. The study concludes that while students generally appeared to benefit from workplace learning, there were challenges that negatively affected workplace learning. The study recommends improved university/industry partnership to enhance workplace learning, among other recommendations. A model for enhancing students’ workplace learning is also proposed

    Social Media and the COVID-19: South African and Zimbabwean Netizens’ Response to a Pandemic

    Since the end of 2019, the world faced a major health crisis in the form of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. To mitigate the impact of the pandemic, governments across the globe instituted measures such as restricting local and international travel and in many cases, ordering citizens to stay indoors. Considering the social and economic impact of these restrictions it becomes crucial to investigate internet citizens’ (netizens) perception about the precautionary measures adopted. The study is anchored in the digital public sphere theory, which treats social media applications as virtual platforms where netizens commune to share ideas and debate about issues that affect them. Social media platforms already have critical public views on the current pandemic. However, the majority of this data is unstructured and difficult to interpret. Natural language processing (NLP), on the other hand, makes the task of gathering and analysing vast amounts of textual data feasible. Extracting structured knowledge from natural language, however, comes with unique challenges due to diverse linguistic properties including abbreviation, spelling mistakes, punctuations, stop words and non-standard text. In this work, The Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) algorithm was applied to tweeter data to extract topics discussed by netzens from Zimbabwe and South Africa.  The primary focus of this paper, is to comparatively explore the variety of topics that occupied twitter communities from the two countries. We examine whether or not the national identities that define and differentiate citizens of these countries also exist on Twitter as evident in the emerging topics.     In today's rapidly evolving digital landscape, the pervasive growth of social media platforms has resulted in an era of unprecedented data generation. These platforms are responsible for generating vast volumes of data on a daily basis, forming intricate webs of patterns and connections that harbor invaluable insights crucial for informed decision-making. Recognizing the significance of exploring social media data, researchers have increasingly turned their attention towards leveraging this data to address a wide array of social research issues. Unlike conventional data collection methods such as questionnaires, interviews, or focus groups, social media data presents unique challenges and opportunities, demanding specialized techniques for its extraction and analysis. However, the absence of a standardized and systematic approach to collect and preprocess social media data remains a gap in the field. This gap not only compromises the quality and credibility of subsequent data analysis but also hinders the realization of the full potential inherent in social media data. This paper aims to bridge this gap by presenting a comprehensive framework designed for the systematic extraction and processing of social media data. The proposed framework offers a clear, step-by-step methodology for the extraction and processing of social media data for analysis.     Effects of management practices on legume productivity in smallholder farming systems in sub-Saharan Africa

    Legumes play a key role in food and nutrition security, providing livestock feed and contributing to soil fertility, in mixed smallholder farms in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). The environmental conditions under which smallholder farming is practiced are highly heterogeneous with large differences in management practices among farms resulting in variable legume productivity. A meta-analysis based on 128 publications was conducted to quantify the effects of intercropping, inoculation with rhizobia, minimum tillage and phosphorus application on legume grain and biomass yield and the amount of biological nitrogen fixation in a range of SSA contexts. To further explain the heterogeneity in the results, legume species, type of inoculant, P-application rate, altitude, rainfall, soil characteristics and non-legume companion crops were used as moderators. lntercropping as compared to sole cropping reduced legume biomass and grain yields to varying extents, although the total land equivalent ratio for the sum of the intercrops was higher than 1 (1.2-1.9)in all cases. Expressed as the relative land equivalent ratio (rLER) intercropping affected pigeonpea grain yield the least (rLER 0.9) and faba bean the most (rLER 0.3). The non-legume companion crops explained some of the heterogeneity where maize and sorghum significantly reduced the legume yields. Inoculation and P application increased legume grain and biomass yield and moderators such as legume species, type of inoculant, soil organic carbon and soil pH further explained the different effects of the management practices on legume productivity. Minimum tillage had no effect on legume productivity. although less data were available than for the other practices. We conclude that intercropping with legumes improves overall productivity and that application of P fertilizer and inoculants increase legume grain and biomass yield. The effect varies with crop species, soil type and other environmental conditions, and this needs to be factored into tailored recommendations supporting decision making in smallholder farming

    ETHNOBOTANICAL STUDY AND CONSERVATION STATUS OF LOCAL MEDICINAL PLANTS: TOWARDS A REPOSITORY AND MONOGRAPH OF HERBAL MEDICINES IN LESOTHO

    Background: Plants are important sources of medicines. Herbal medicines in Lesotho are exposed to excessive exploitation and habitat destruction. Comprehensive information to promote proper use and conservation of these herbal medicines is lacking. This study described the uses of medicinal plants in Lesotho with comparative reference between practice and the literature, highlighting important ethno-medicinal information and conservation status of the plants. Additionally, the study established a repository and monograph for the herbal medicines in Lesotho. Materials and Methods: Medicinal plant samples and information on their uses were obtained from herbalists in four districts of Lesotho between January and May 2014 through questionnaire-based interviews. Samples consisted of roots, bark, stems or leaves and/or combinations. Voucher samples were processed into powders, labelled, and stored in a repository. Information on the uses, plant parts used, geographical distribution, known phytochemical components and conservation status of each plant was recorded in a Microsoft Access database. Results: Seventy-eight local herbalists were interviewed and men (about 84%) dominated the practice of traditional medicine. Fifty-four herbal medicine samples were collected and stored in a recently established Lesotho Herbal Medicines Repository (LHMR). The herbal medicines were from 54 medicinal plant species and 46 genera belonging to 29 plant families. Asteraceae (about 20%) was the most common plant family. Overall, 46% (n=54) of the prescriptions by local herbalists were similar to prescriptions in the literature at least in part. However, traditional medicinal uses for 9% of the plant samples could not be confirmed from the literature. Local herbalists use different parts of medicinal plants with roots being the most frequently (57%) used part. Twenty percent of the plants were threatened with extinction while the conservation status of 7% of the plants was undocumented. Conclusion: Training of local herbalists on sustainable harvesting and safe use of medicinal plants is recommended. The repository and monograph is a useful reference and source of herbal medicine samples for researchers, which need to be expanded to include more medicinal plants in Lesotho. Local herbalists in Lesotho have valuable indigenous information on medicinal plants that needs to be documented

    Grain legumes and dryland cereals contribute to carbon sequestration in the drylands of Africa and South Asia

    Grain legumes and drylands cereals including chickpea (Cicer arietinum), common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris), cowpea (Vigna unguiculata), groundnut (Arachis hypogaea), lentil (Lens culinaris), pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan), soybean (Glycine max), finger millet (Eleusine coracana), pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum) and sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) are the leading sources of food grain in drylands of Africa and South Asia. These crops can help smallholder agriculture to become more resilient, productive, and profitable, but their quantitative impact on carbon sequestration is unknown. The aim of this review study was to quantify their contribution to carbon sequestration across the drylands of Africa and South Asia based on 437 publications with 1319 observations in studies conducted across 32 countries. Cropping systems with grain legumes showed the greatest increase in soil organic carbon (SOC) concentrations, while cereals (and pigeon pea) gave the largest amount of aboveground carbon stock (>2 Mg C ha 1). Estimated carbon stock in post-harvest residues of these crops was 1.51 +/- 0.05 Mg C ha 1 in Africa and 2.29 +/- 0.10 Mg C ha 1 in South Asia. These crops produced more aboveground carbon, and significantly increased SOC, when grown as intercrops. Soils with low initial SOC (32%) showed the greatest potential for carbon sequestration when cropped with grain legumes and dryland cereals. This study is the first of its kind to provide evidence that grain legumes and drylands cereals improve carbon sequestration across Africa and South Asia

    Near real time water quality monitoring of Chivero and Manyame lakes of Zimbabwe

    Zimbabwe’s water resources are under pressure from both point and non-point sources of pollution hence the need for regular and synoptic assessment. In-situ and laboratory based methods of water quality monitoring are point based and do not provide a synoptic coverage of the lakes. This paper presents novel methods for retrieving water quality parameters in Chivero and Manyame lakes, Zimbabwe, from remotely sensed imagery. Remotely sensed derived water quality parameters are further validated using in-situ data. It also presents an application for automated retrieval of those parameters developed in VB6, as well as a web portal for disseminating the water quality information to relevant stakeholders. The web portal is developed, using Geoserver, open layers and HTML. Results show the spatial variation of water quality and an automated remote sensing and GIS system with a web front end to disseminate water quality information

    Farmer perceptions of legumes and their functions in smallholder farming systems in east Africa

    Legumes play an important role in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) farming systems through the provision of food, feed, fuel, income and a range of biophysical benefits, such as soil fertility enhancement and erosion control. However, their full potential is not being realized. The purpose of this study was to assess farmers’ perceptions and knowledge towards legumes and the rationale of farmers for current legume production practices using a survey of 268 farmers in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Kenya. Most of the farmers had some knowledge of legumes and their characteristics. However, they had little knowledge of some key functions, including soil erosion control and soil fertility improvement. Most farmers relied on radio and other farmers for legume-related information. Farmers with relatively large livestock holdings ranked provision of livestock feed as an important legume function. We conclude that farmers put more value on short-term benefits of legumes including food and income than long-term benefits such as natural resource management and thus grain legumes are more readily identified by farmers than forage species. Also, we conclude that farmers require more than just information about legumes to increase uptake, they also require improved market access to procure inputs and sell products to realize other benefits that are associated with growing legumes

    Conservation agriculture as a climate change mitigation strategy in Zimbabwe

    There is a need to quantify agriculture’s potential to sequester carbon (C) to inform global approaches aimed at mitigating climate change effects. Many factors including climate, crop, soil management practices, and soil type can influence the contribution of agriculture to the global carbon cycle. The objective of this study was to investigate the C sequestration potential of conservation agriculture (CA) (defined by minimal soil disturbance, maintaining permanent soil cover, and crop rotations). This study used micrometeorological methods to measure carbon dioxide (CO2) flux from several alternative CA practices in Harare, central Zimbabwe. Micrometeorological methods can detect differences in total CO2 emissions of agricultural management practices; our results show that CA practices produce less CO2 emissions. Over three years of measurement, the mean and standard error (SE) of CO2 emissions for the plot with the most consistent CA practices was 0.564 ± 0.0122 g CO2 m-2 h-1, significantly less than 0.928 ± 0.00859 g CO2 m-2 h-1 for the conventional tillage practice.
