A STUDY ON TANYA THOMAS’S CONFLICTS ON DANIELLE STEEL’S NOVEL “THE RANCH”

Literature is a way of reproducing or recreating the experiences of life in words. Literature is identical with daily life because it describes what and how human life is and usually it reflects from the events that happen in the society. Generally, literature consists of poetry, drama and novel. Novel is fictious prose of considerable length in which characters and actions processing to represents those of real life are portrayed in plot. The writer of this thesis chooses one of Danielle Steel’s novel as the title “The Ranch” to be analyzed. Dealing with this study, the writer presents three problems: What are psychological conflicts faced by Tanya Thomas? What are the causes of Tanya Thomas Psychological conflicts? How does Tanya Thomas solve her psychological conflicts? In analyzing this novel, the writer uses descriptive method because she wants to describe the real condition that exists in the object she investigated. Dealing with the study, the writer of this thesis uses the objective approach. The population of this study is the whole events or elements that exist in Danielle Steel’s novel “The Ranch”. The sample is some paragraphs, events or dialogue quotation that are related to the conflict that “Tanya Thomas” has in the novel “The Ranch” by “Danielle Steel”. After analyzing the data, The writer found out the result: Tanya Thomas’s psychological conflicts make her feels depressed, disappointed, and sad. The causes of Tanya Thomas psychological conflicts are the untrue news about her in the tabloids, then her husband decided to leave her and the last is she has no family that must support her. And to solve her problems, Tanya Thomas decided to go to Wyoming and buy the ranch in order if she getting bored to live in Hollywood she can go to the ranch to pull down her problems

PRESUPPOSITION IN INTERROGATIVE HEADLINES ON “ALLKPOP” NEWS AND GOSSIP SITE

Dalam setiap ujaran yang dibuat oleh penutur biasanya terdapat asumsi awal yang tidak diucapkan tapi tetap tersampaikan. Oleh sebab itu, penulis memiliki ketertarikan untuk menguraikan apa yang menjadi asumsi awal penutur yang tidak diucapkan secara langsung pada tuturannya. Dalam Skripsi ini penulis menggunakan judul berita pada website tentang berita dan gossip Kpop bernama allkpop sebagai bahan dari analisis. Judul berita yang digunakan untuk proses analisis lebih tepatnya yaitu judul berita yang ditulis dalam bentuk kalimat tanya. Pentingnya dari analisis ini yaitu untuk mengetahui asumsi yang ada untuk menunjukkan apa fungsi dibalik judul berita tersebut. Untuk mengetahui asumsi penutur, penulis menggunakan teori presupposition. Batasan dalam penelitian ini yaitu penggunaan presupposition triggers yang hanya difokuskan pada salah satu jenis yaitu questions. Tujuan penulisan Skripsi ini adalah untuk menguraikan praanggapan penulis berdasarkan judul berita yang ditulisnya dalam format kalimat tanya. Tujuan lainnya yaitu untuk mengetahui indikasi dari praanggapan yang muncul untuk menunjukkan fungsi dari judul berita yang ditulis dalam format kalimat tanya tersebut. Dalam Skripsi ini data yang digunakan yaitu ujaran atau teks judul berita dengan format kalimat tanya yang diambil dari berita yang diterbitkan pada tanggal antara 20 – 26 Februari 2013. Metode pengambilan sample menggunakan metode purposive sampling dan teori Sudaryanto yaitu simak bebas libat cakap. Dalam menganalisis data tersebut, penulis menggunakan salah satu teori presupposition triggers yaitu questions dari Stephen C. Levinson dan juga teori yang serupa dari George Yule. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa jenis kalimat tanya yang berbeda memiliki praanggapan yang berbeda pula yang juga menimbulkan indikasi yang berbeda. Walaupun begitu, terdapat satu persamaan indikasi yaitu dalam setiap judul berita yang ditulis dalam kalimat tanya memiliki ‘hal’. Berdasarkan praanggapan tersebut, didapat bahwa judul berita tersebut memiliki fungsi tersendiri, yaitu mewakili posisi pembaca, menumbuhkan rasa penasaran pada pembaca, dan menuntun pembaca pada jawaban atas rasa penasaran tersebut. Oleh karena itu, judul berita yang ditulis dalam bentuk kalimat tanya memiliki peranan yang lebih untuk menarik banyak pembaca

ADENYLYL CYCLASE TYPE 9: REGULATION AND CARDIAC FUNCTION

Abnormalities in cardiac stress signaling underlie a number of cardiovascular diseases (e.g. arrhythmias and heart failure). Cardiac stress signaling pathways normally integrate signals from the sympathetic nervous system to promote efficient contraction and relaxation under stress. Sympathetic control through β-adrenergic stimulation is propagated by adenylyl cyclase (AC). AC synthesizes cyclic AMP (cAMP), an important second messenger that initiates signaling pathways to modulate physiological and pathophysiological functions of the heart, including the activation of PKA and subsequent phosphorylation of ion channels, contractile machinery, and stress response proteins that enhance cardiac function. Alterations of cAMP signaling occur in the failing heart and contribute to impaired function. Of the AC isoforms present in adult cardiomyocytes (AC 4, 5, 6, and 9), AC9 is the most divergent in sequence and understudied. The work presented in this dissertation sought to evaluate the direct regulatory properties of AC9 and explores roles for AC9 in heart. To clarify conflicting reports for AC9 regulation, proposed regulators were systematically evaluated, including G-proteins, protein kinases, and forskolin utilizing in vitro and cell based assays. Overall, I conclude that most G-proteins or protein kinases do not directly regulate AC9, except Gαs, in vitro. Although AC9 is forskolin insensitive alone, weak activation by forskolin in the presence of Gαs is possible. AC9 shows significant homodimerization and modest heterodimerization with AC5/6, which may account for the conflicting reports surrounding the regulation of this AC isoform. viii To study the role of AC9 in heart, a mouse model of AC9 genetic deletion was utilized. Although deletion of AC9 reduces less than 3% of total AC activity in heart, Yotiao-associated AC activity is eliminated. AC9-/- mice exhibit no structural abnormalities but show a significant bradycardia and alterations in Doppler echocardiography indicative of grade 1 diastolic dysfunction with preserved ejection fraction. Identification of novel AC9 binding partners, including the small heat shock protein 20 (Hsp20) and Popeye domain containing (Popdc) proteins may contribute to the underlying mechanisms of AC9-/- phenotypes. Collectively, this work suggests that AC9 forms distinct macromolecular complexes that contribute to local cAMP pools important for driving physiological function of the heart

Penelitian ini bertujuan (1) Mendeskripsikan wujud kalimat tanya pada wacana Cerita Anak dalam koran Kompas edisi bulan Oktober s.d. November 2012, (2) Mengklasifikasikan jenis kalimat tanya pada wacana Cerita Anak dalam koran Kompas edisi bulan Oktober s.d. November 2012. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif deskritif. Objek penelitian ini adalah kalimat tanya pada Wacana Cerita Anak dalam Koran Kompas edisi bulan Oktober s.d. November 2012. Adapun sumber data dalam penelitian ini yaitu wacana cerita anak dalam koran Kompas edisi bulan Oktober s.d.November 2012. Teknik pengumpulan data yakni menggunakan metode simak dengan teknik catat. Teknik validitas data dalam penelitian ini yaitu menggunakan trianggulasi teori. Adapun teknik analisis data yang digunakan yaitu menggunakan metode agih dengan teknik lanjutan menggunakan teknik sisip. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa bentuk kalimat tanya pada wacana cerita anak dalam koran Kompas edisi bulan Oktober s.d. November 2012 ditemukan bentuk kalimat tanya yang menggunakan pengakuan ya–tidak, kalimat yang menggunakan bentuk kata tanya siapa yang bermaksud menanyakan tentang manusia atau makhluk hidup, kalimat tanya yang menggunakan bentuk kata tanya apa dengan maksud menayakan sesuatu yang meminta sebuah keterangan atau penjelasan, kalimat yang menggunakan bentuk kata tanya berapa dengan maksud menanyakan jumlah atau banyaknya sesuatu, kalimat tanya yang menggunakan bentuk kata tanya mengapa dengan maksud menanyakan sesuatu yang meminta jawaban berupa alasan, kalimat yang menggunakan bentuk kata tanya kenapa dengan maksud menanyakan tentang penyebab sesuatu, kalimat tanya yang menggunakan bentuk kata tanya bagaimana dengan maksud menanyakan proses, pendapat, dan keadaan atau situasi, kalimat tanya yang diikuti kata bukan dengan maksud mengharapkan jawaban yang menguatkan atau meyakinkan, kalimat tanya yang menegaskan dan kalimat tanya yang menggugah hati. Objecting (to) Infrastructure: Ecopolitics at the Ukrainian Ends of the Danube

In southern Ukraine, two hydraulic infrastructures continue to exist despite environmentalist campaigns that have exposed them as fragile, broken or unprofitable. The Danube-Dnister Irrigation Project (DDIS), a Soviet mega-project that diverted water from the Danube and turned the Sasyk estuary into a reservoir, receives state funding despite a 1994 ban on its use for irrigation. The Bystre Shipping Canal, built in 2004 despite domestic and international opposition, is losing money but continues to operate. These cases exemplify the material politics of infrastructuring in which infrastructure is understood as an antagonistic process of assembling networks of humans and nonhumans rather than a fixed facility. This approach helps explain how the confluence of unruly coastal matters and the politics of expertise have facilitated these shipping and irrigation infrastructures’ re-embedding in bureaucratic networks. These cases show that obduracy and fragility, as well as visibility and invisibility––conditions that figure prominently in infrastructure studies––should be considered in terms of oscillation rather than as ontologically distinct or static conditions. This analysis also highlights the limits of the modernist search for scientific certainty in resolving environmental conflicts in Ukraine, and some possibilities to experiment politically with new decision-making procedures. This account can thus serve as a “story that intervenes” by pointing beyond reform impulses that re-enact modernist narratives of progress within a strict nature-society divide

Managing Ambiguous Amphibians: Feral Cows, People, and Place in Ukraine’s Danube Delta

This paper analyzes how a herd of feral cattle emerged in the core zone of Ukraine’s Danube Biosphere Reserve and why it still exists despite numerous challenges to the legality of its presence there. Answering these questions requires an analytical approach that begins from the premise that animals, plants, substances, documents, and technologies are active participants in making social and political worlds rather than passive objects of human intervention and manipulation. Drawing together insights from multispecies ethnography, animal geography, amphibious anthropology, and studies of nature protection in former Soviet republics, the author argues that the feral cattle exist because they are part of an amphibious multispecies assemblage in which relations among cattle, elements of the delta’s wetland ecologies, legal norms, and the Reserve managers’ documentation practices have aligned to create an autonomous space for cattle to dwell with minimal human intervention

Online network use in schools: Social and educational opportunities

Most state governments in Australia have banned popular online networking sites from public schools after these sites were accused of supporting a broad host of threats to young people. This paper questions the effectiveness of these bans in light of recent empirical research that highlights the social and educational benefits that can accrue from young people's online network use. In doing so, this paper argues for a more informed policy debate that considers not only the risks involved in using online networks, but also the opportunities online networks afford and the capabilities young people require to use them effectively
