The beach is one of the main tourist resources of Weizhou Island. The quality of the beach landforms and coastal environment greatly influences the comfort and overall experience of tourists. This is primarily affected by both human and natural factors. Based on multiple field surveys conducted on Weizhou Island and previous research materials, this paper focuses on studying the changes in the Shiluokou-Dishuicun beach landforms of Weizhou Island and their impact on the ecological environment. The following four conclusions are drawn: 1) The degradation of coral reefs leads to coastal retreat; 2) Storm surges result in the destruction of coastal vegetation; 3) Headlands cause a large accumulation of coastal sediments; 4) Circulation is the main limiting factor for beach migration and expansion. Finally, based on the research conclusions, along with a superficial investigation and review of related materials on the coastal engineering at Yalong Bay, Hainan, specific suggestions for the protection of Weizhou Island's beach ecological environment are proposed

Data-driven learning of collocations by Chinese learners of English:a longitudinal perspective

Collocations, a crucial component of language competence, remain a challenge for L2 learners across all proficiency levels. While the data-driven learning (DDL) approach has shown great potential for collocation learning from a shorter-term perspective, this study investigates its effectiveness in the long term, examining both linguistic gains and changes in learners’ confidence about which words collocate. The effect of DDL was compared with learning collocations using a corpus-based collocations dictionary and non-corpus-based tools. Learners’ experience with the tools was also explored through a questionnaire. The study employed a quasi-experimental research design with 100 Chinese learners of English as participants in two experimental groups and a control group. A novel corpus tool, #LancsBox (Brezina et al., Citation2015), was used in the DDL approach to identify and visualise collocations. The results showed that the learners in the DDL group increased their collocation knowledge at the end of the treatment and retained the gains three months later. The learners also reported a significant increase in their confidence about which words collocate. Both changes were found to be more substantial than the effects of using the corpus-based collocations dictionary or other tools. As for their experience, learners reported satisfaction with using corpora in their writing and, importantly, continued with corpus consultation three months after the end of the intervention. The findings have implications for integrating corpus consultation into learning practice both inside and outside of the classroom, showing that with sufficient training, DDL can provide an effective method to learn complex linguistic features such as collocations

DICO-JALF v.1.0: Diponegoro Corpus of Japanese Learners as a Foreign Language in Indonesia with AI Error Annotation and Human Supervision

There is a growing body of research in using AI for corrective feedback in foreign language teaching. However, few studies have specifically addressed the accuracy of AI analysis in learner corpus research. This study aims to create an AI-annotated corpus whose data were obtained from learners of Japanese as a Foreign Language (JFL) in Indonesia with human supervision; branded it as DICO-JALF v.1.0. The aim is to measure to what extent ChatGPT accurately annotates errors. A task was first administered to collect corpus data and metadata to build the corpus. The corpus was error-annotated using ChatGPT 4.0. Human annotators manually supervised the accuracy of AI-generated annotations. Regarding errors committed by learners, it is observed that incorrect lexical choices and forms dominate the cause of errors, while underuse and overuse are minimal. It can be concluded that ChatGPT demonstrated an average accuracy of 70% correct identification of errors. Regarding error rate, the verb is the category where errors are most frequent, which maybe driven by its conjugation, a feature absent in Indonesian, the L1 of the students. This suggests that Indonesian learners' acquisition of Japanese verbs needs greater emphasis. As compared to other similar studies, this is relatively low. However, it can be argued that one factor determining the accuracy of ChatGPT annotations, or any other LLM-based tool, is the complexity of the annotation scheme they adhere to. The corpus have been made available for download. The annotations shall be readable by a corpus query system that reads XML tags. This corpus serves as a foundational resource for future research on AI-assisted error analysis in JFL learning contexts in Indonesia

Integrated microRNA-mRNA analysis provides new insights into gonad coloration in the sea urchin Strongylocentrotus intermedius

Comparative microRNA (miRNA) and mRNA transcriptome analyses were performed on Strongylocentrotus intermedius of the same sex with significant gonadal color differences. The results indicated that 1) the color of female gonads was generally superior to that of males. 2) Comparative and integrated miRNA and mRNA transcriptome analyses identified differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and differentially expressed miRNAs (DEMs) in female and male individuals with significant gonadal color differences. Common and sex-specific DEGs and “DEM-DEG” pairs involved in carotenoid absorption, accumulation, and transformation were identified as candidates correlated with gonad coloration in S. intermedius. Collectively, the results from this study have enriched our knowledge of the process of sea urchin gonad coloration and should provide additional clues for increasing the gonad quality of commercial sea urchins from molecular and metabolic aspects

Seismic Performance Assessment of Regular and Irregular RC Buildings Under BNBC 2020 Using ETABS

    Get PDF
Seismic performance analysis is crucial to guaranteeing the structural safety of buildings, particularly in seismic-prone locations. This study examines the seismic performance of reinforced concrete (RC) structures with regular and irregular plan forms using ETABS v17 and the Equivalent Static Force Procedure (ESFP) based on the Bangladesh National Building Code (BNBC) 2020. This study focuses on the major earthquake characteristics such lateral displacement, story drift, base shear, torsional irregularity, and overturning moment. Seven alternative plan forms, including rectangle, square, T, U, W, H, and L-shaped structures, were examined to assess the impact of geometric imperfections on seismic response. The results demonstrate that irregular structures endure substantially greater lateral displacement and story drift than regular designs, particularly above the seventh story, which renders them more sensitive to seismic activity. The W-shaped structure maintained the largest base shear, but torsional irregularity was more noticeable in T, U, and H-shaped structures, showing their sensitivity to rotational impacts. Overturning moment study also suggested that irregular structures are more sensitive to instability induced by non-uniform distribution of pressures. All these discoveries underscore the requirement of optimal structural design, superior lateral load-resisting systems, and suitable reinforcing to limit seismic threats. The study emphasizes the need for compliance with seismic design codes and recommends that the incorporation of shear walls, bracing systems, and moment-resisting frames would be able to improve seismic strength. Future research should take into account sophisticated nonlinear dynamic analysis and retrofitting solutions to further increase the seismic resilience of irregular high-rise buildings

SIRT1 is regulated by a PPARγ–SIRT1 negative feedback loop associated with senescence

    Get PDF
Human Silent Information Regulator Type 1 (SIRT1) is an NAD+-dependent deacetylase protein which is an intermediary of cellular metabolism in gene silencing and aging. SIRT1 has been extensively investigated and shown to delay senescence; however, less is known about the regulation of SIRT1 during aging. In this study, we show that the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ (PPARγ), which is a ligand-regulated modular nuclear receptor that governs adipocyte differentiation and inhibits cellular proliferation, inhibits SIRT1 expression at the transcriptional level. Moreover, both PPARγ and SIRT1 can bind the SIRT1 promoter. PPARγ directly interacts with SIRT1 and inhibits SIRT1 activity, forming a negative feedback and self-regulation loop. In addition, our data show that acetylation of PPARγ increased with increasing cell passage number. We propose that PPARγ is subject to regulation by acetylation and deacetylation via p300 and SIRT1 in cellular senescence. These results demonstrate a mutual regulation between PPARγ and SIRT1 and identify a new posttranslational modification that affects cellular senescence
