    A Prospective Study of the Incidence of Retinopathy of Prematurity in China: Evaluation of Different Screening Criteria

    To investigate the incidence of Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) in Beijing, North China, and to evaluate the effectiveness of different ROP screening criteria, we conducted a prospective cohort study in a single-neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). A total of 2997 premature infants with birth weight (BW) ≤ 2000 g and/or gestational age (GA) ≤ 34 weeks had completed ROP screening. ROP was diagnosed in 356 (11.9%) infants. The mean GA was 30.46 ± 1.98 weeks and the mean BW was 1477.35 ± 371.29 g. Of the 59 (2.0%) infants receiving treatment, the mean GA was 29.37 ± 2.10 weeks, and the mean BW was 1240.80 ± 330.71 g. The incidence of ROP declined from 14.7% in 2009 and 11.1% in 2010 to 9.5% in 2011. The United Kingdom (UK) criteria could reduce the screening number by 40.8%, and 3 infants with type I ROP needing treatment were missed, but none in 2011. The United States (US) criteria could reduce the screening number by 66.5%, and 10 infants with type I ROP needing treatment were missed, including one in 2011. So the UK criteria may be appropriate for screening of ROP in our NICU in 2011. Future multisite epidemiologic studies are required to establish suitable ROP screening criteria in China

    Alantolactone exerts anti-proliferative and apoptotic effects on BGC823 and SGC7901 cells via activation of p38MAPK and inhibition of NF-κB signaling pathway

    Purpose: To investigate the anti-proliferative and apoptotic influences of alantolactone on gastric carcinoma (GC) cell lines, and the mechanism(s) involved. Methods: Human gastric cancer cell line (BGC823) and gastric adenocarcinoma lymph node metastasis cell line (SGC7901) were maintained in Ham’s F12 medium supplemented with 10 % heatinactivated fetal bovine serum (FBS). In each group of cancer cell line, 5 groups of cells were used: control and four alantolactone groups which were treated with increasing concentrations of alantolactone (5 - 30 μM) for varying periods. Proliferation was determined using MTT assay, while realtime quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) was used to assay the expressions of apoptosis- and metastasis-related genes. The expressions of p38MAPK and nuclear transcription factor-κB (NF-κB) in BGC823 and SGC7901 cells were measured with Western blotting. Results: Phosphorylated protein (p-p38 protein) expression was significantly higher in both groups of GC cells, relative to control (p < 0.05). The expressions of NF-κB in plasma protein were markedly higher in both groups of GC cells than in control group, but the corresponding expressions in nuclear protein were significantly lower in both groups of GC cells, relative to control (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Alantolactone exerts anti-proliferative and apoptotic effects on BGC823 and SGC7901 cells via mechanisms involving activation of the p38MAPK, and inhibition of the NF-κB signaling pathways. Thus, alantolactone may be a new and effective anti-gastric cancer drug

    The cultural shaping of alexithymia: Values and externally oriented thinking in a Chinese clinical sample

    Objective: Alexithymia is a multi-faceted personality construct characterized by difficulties in identifying and describing emotional states. Originally based on observations of American psychosomatic patients, the construct is now studied in a variety of cultural contexts. However, few studies have critically examined alexithymia from a cultural perspective. Dere et al. [1] recently found support for the hypothesis that one alexithymia component \textendash {} externally oriented thinking (EOT) – is linked to cultural values, among Euro-Canadian and Chinese-Canadian students. The current study examines this association in a Chinese clinical sample. Methods: Outpatients presenting at three hospital-based psychology clinics in Hunan province, China (N=268) completed a structured clinical interview and self-report measures of alexithymia and cultural values. All participants endorsed clinically significant levels of depressed mood, anhedonia, and/or fatigue. Results: As expected, EOT was negatively predicted by Modernization and Euro-American values. Two other alexithymia components, difficulty identifying feelings and difficulty describing feelings, were unrelated to cultural values. Conclusion: These findings suggest that cultural variations in the importance placed on emotional experience must be taken into account in cross-cultural alexithymia research. Such studies should also consider separately the specific components of alexithymia; failure to do so can lead to overestimation of alexithymia in groups where scores are driven by culturally-promoted EOT. © 2013 Elsevier Inc.     The proper class generated by weak supplements

    We show that, for hereditary rings, the smallest proper classes containing respectively the classes of short exact sequences determined by small submodules, submodules that have supplements and weak supplement submodules coincide. Moreover, we show that this class can be obtained as a natural extension of the class determined by small submodules. We also study injective, projective, coinjective and coprojective objects of this class. We prove that it is coinjectively generated and its global dimension is at most 1. Finally, we describe this class for Dedekind domains in terms of supplement submodules.TUBITAK (107T709

    Sensitive fluorescence detection of nucleic acids based on isothermal circular strand-displacement polymerization reaction

    Here we have developed a sensitive DNA amplified detection method based on isothermal strand-displacement polymerization reaction. This method takes advantage of both the hybridization property of DNA and the strand-displacement property of polymerase. Importantly, we demonstrate that our method produces a circular polymerization reaction activated by the target, which essentially allows it to self-detect. Functionally, this DNA system consists of a hairpin fluorescence probe, a short primer and polymerase. Upon recognition and hybridization with the target ssDNA, the stem of the hairpin probe is opened, after which the opened probe anneals with the primer and triggers the polymerization reaction. During this process of the polymerization reaction, a complementary DNA is synthesized and the hybridized target is displaced. Finally, the displaced target recognizes and hybridizes with another probe, triggering the next round of polymerization reaction, reaching a target detection limit of 6.4 × 10−15 M

    Hyperconnectivity of the lateral amygdala in long-term methamphetamine abstainers negatively correlated with withdrawal duration

    Introduction: Several studies have reported structural and functional abnormalities of the amygdala caused by methamphetamine addiction. However, it is unknown whether abnormalities in amygdala function persist in long-term methamphetamine abstainers.Methods: In this study, 38 long-term male methamphetamine abstainers (>12 months) and 40 demographically matched male healthy controls (HCs) were recruited. Considering the heterogeneous nature of the amygdala structure and function, we chose 4 amygdala subregions (i.e., left lateral, left medial, right lateral, and right medial) as regions of interest (ROI) and compared the ROI-based resting-state functional connectivity (FC) at the whole-brain voxel-wise between the two groups. We explored the relationship between the detected abnormal connectivity, methamphetamine use factors, and the duration of withdrawal using correlation analyses. We also examined the effect of methamphetamine use factors, months of withdrawal, and sociodemographic data on detected abnormal connectivity through multiple linear regressions.Results: Compared with HCs, long-term methamphetamine abstainers showed significant hyperconnectivity between the left lateral amygdala and a continuous area extending to the left inferior/middle occipital gyrus and left middle/superior temporal gyrus. Abnormal connections negatively correlated with methamphetamine withdrawal time (r = −0.85, p < 0.001). The linear regression model further demonstrated that the months of withdrawal could identify the abnormal connectivity (βadj = −0.86, 95%CI: −1.06 to −0.65, p < 0.001).Discussion: The use of methamphetamine can impair the neural sensory system, including the visual and auditory systems, but this abnormal connectivity can gradually recover after prolonged withdrawal of methamphetamine. From a neuroimaging perspective, our results suggest that withdrawal is an effective treatment for methamphetamine

    Drug-Tolerant Cancer Cells Show Reduced Tumor-Initiating Capacity: Depletion of CD44+ Cells and Evidence for Epigenetic Mechanisms

    Cancer stem cells (CSCs) possess high tumor-initiating capacity and have been reported to be resistant to therapeutics. Vice versa, therapy-resistant cancer cells seem to manifest CSC phenotypes and properties. It has been generally assumed that drug-resistant cancer cells may all be CSCs although the generality of this assumption is unknown. Here, we chronically treated Du145 prostate cancer cells with etoposide, paclitaxel and some experimental drugs (i.e., staurosporine and 2 paclitaxel analogs), which led to populations of drug-tolerant cells (DTCs). Surprisingly, these DTCs, when implanted either subcutaneously or orthotopically into NOD/SCID mice, exhibited much reduced tumorigenicity or were even non-tumorigenic. Drug-tolerant DLD1 colon cancer cells selected by a similar chronic selection protocol also displayed reduced tumorigenicity whereas drug-tolerant UC14 bladder cancer cells demonstrated either increased or decreased tumor-regenerating capacity. Drug-tolerant Du145 cells demonstrated low proliferative and clonogenic potential and were virtually devoid of CD44+ cells. Prospective knockdown of CD44 in Du145 cells inhibited cell proliferation and tumor regeneration, whereas restoration of CD44 expression in drug-tolerant Du145 cells increased cell proliferation and partially increased tumorigenicity. Interestingly, drug-tolerant Du145 cells showed both increases and decreases in many “stemness” genes. Finally, evidence was provided that chronic drug exposure generated DTCs via epigenetic mechanisms involving molecules such as CD44 and KDM5A. Our results thus reveal that 1) not all DTCs are necessarily CSCs; 2) conventional chemotherapeutic drugs such as taxol and etoposide may directly target CD44+ tumor-initiating cells; and 3) DTCs generated via chronic drug selection involve epigenetic mechanisms

    A Bibliometric Visualized Analysis and Classification of Vehicle Routing Problem Research

    The vehicle routing problem (VRP), as a classic combinatorial optimization problem, has always been a hot research topic in operations research. In order to gain a deeper understanding of the VRP problem, this work uses the knowledge graph to comprehensively analyze and summarize the literature related to VRP from 1959 to 2022 in the Web of Science (WoS) database. Firstly, according to the basic statistical information of the literature, the annual publications, the authors, their institutions and countries, the keyword co-occurrence, and the literature co-citation network are analyzed to comprehensively summarize and generalize the research on VRP and predict its future development trend. The results show that, in the past 60 years, there have been abundant changes in the research on VRP. The United States and China have made the most important contributions in the field of VRP. According to the WoS literature retrieval results and classification methods, the VRP models and their solutions are comprehensively classified, and the model solving algorithms are divided into exact algorithms, heuristic algorithms, metaheuristic algorithms, hyper-heuristic algorithms, machine learning, etc. The results show that the development of information computing technology plays an important role in research on the VRP problem, and dynamic VRP, hyper-heuristic algorithms, deep reinforcement learning, etc. are the future development directions of the VRP model and its optimization. The results of this research can provide help and guidance for beginners and scholars outside the industry to comprehensively understand the development and research hotspots of VRP
