Some crucial corona and prominence observations

    Get PDF
A number of theories and hypotheses are currently being developed to explain the often complex behavior of corona and prominence plasmas. In order to test the theories and hypotheses certain crucial observations are necessary. Some of these observations are examined and a few conclusions are drawn. Corona mass balance, corona and prominence classifications, prominence formation and stability, and coronal mass ejection are dicussed

General Aviation Modular Electric Tow Bar

    Get PDF
In general aviation, pilots use either a tow bar or a tug to maneuver their planes to and from its parking place. A tow bar is a lightweight human powered device that allows a pilot to push and pull his/her pane by themselves using human power. A tug is a similar device, except much bigger and heavier, and is electrically powered, allowing for an easier time maneuvering a plane. The downside to a tug is since they are bigger and heaver, they cannot be taken with a pilot on a trip. The goal of this project was to combine the best parts of both devices, making something that is electrically powered and able to maneuver a Cessna 175 on its own, but is small and light weight enough to be taken with on a trip. The device is made from a 20:1 worm gear set, powered by a 20V DeWalt cordless drill. The drill power is transferred through the gearbox to a set of 8-in pneumatic wheel that will push and pull the aircraft. All these parts are connected to a frame made of 1”x1” T Slot extrusions. The frame can be taken apart into smaller pieces to allow for storage inside a Cessna 175. This project was tested on four areas; ability of device, weight, storage, and usability. The device was successfully able to maneuver a plane on its own, as well as able to be stored in a Cessna 175. Unfortunately, the device’s weight is 100 percent over target, and it takes too long to assemble and disassemble

That Song from TikTok: How Independent musicians develop their careers through the short-video platform.

Through my master’s thesis I have explored the relationship between TikTok and the music industries, through the interactions of independent musicians. With a qualitative approach through conducting semi-structured interviews with four independent musicians who are active on TikTok, this thesis has discussed themes such as TikTok’s place in the music industry, algorithms and music discovery, and potential revenue streams. These themes have been discussed throughout the thesis based on established theory within participation culture, digital disruptions, artist health, and Do-it-yourself social media marketing. The thesis argues for TikTok’s place within the recording industry and explains how the platform creates new, albeit small revenue streams. TikTok is simultaneously an essential tool for independent music marketing, while also posing a threat to the mental health of artists who are unprepared to manage the harsh reality of the internet

Make a U-turn if possible : the GPS voice and its three advisory comrades in climate policymaking

    Get PDF
Climate Advisory Bodies have been established in more than 40 countries as an instrument to help policymakers reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This thesis investigates the influence of climate advisory bodies on policymaking by looking at key stakeholder perceptions. Nine semi-structured interviews were conducted with stakeholders with insight into the climate policymaking process. By doing a structured focused comparison, this study compares empirical findings of climate advisory bodies in two Nordic countries; Norway and Denmark. Applying the Climate Policy Integration Framework, this study adds novel insight into the policy process by applying four lenses to study the influence of advisory bodies, namely the legitimiser, knowledge broker, policy entrepreneur, and GPS voice. The results indicate that the Danish Council on Climate Change (DCCC) is perceived to be a pronounced GPS voice both through publicly guiding the government and in providing independent advice to a broad range of actors who use this to push climate politics. The DCCC also functions as a broker of knowledge, as well as an entrepreneur on the policy ambitiousness level. The Norwegian advisory structure seems suited to providing specific innovative advice to the policy process, but it lacks the structure to function as a GPS voice or a knowledge broker, limiting its potential to contribute to decarbonisation.M-IE

Gender Diversity in the Norwegian Energy Sector and its Development : A descriptive and explanatory study

    Get PDF
Using Norwegian register data accessed through microdata.no, this thesis seeks to provide a description of gender diversity in the Norwegian energy sector, and renewables specifically. Existing research on gender diversity in the energy sectors over the world draws a picture of a male-dominated sector with a persistent gender wage gap. The thesis is divided into two main parts trying to examine the Norwegian energy sector. The first part (chapter 3) is a descriptive analysis on how female participation has evolved from 2000-2019, along with the evolution of several other key characteristics. The second part (chapter 4) attempts to assess the gender wage gap in the Norwegian energy sector using a Blinder-Oaxaca (B-O) decomposition method for the years 2014 and 2018. The aim here is to compare traditional energy to renewable energy and investigate differences in the drivers of the gender wage gap. The findings from the descriptive analysis show that there is little evidence of changes in the percentage of women in the energy workforce across almost all sub-sectors. For renewable energy sources, there is even a decline from 25% to 23% from 2010 to 2019. Regarding the gender wage gap investigation, the findings for the traditional and renewable energy sector are similar. Across all conducted regressions and samples, the unexplained part of the gap is large, meaning only a small part of the gap can be attributed to the observed variables such as education, experience, or occupations. In the B-O decomposition literature, the unexplained gap can often be (partly) attributed to discrimination. We argue that not all of the unexplained gap we find is due to discrimination in the energy sector directly, but could stem from discrimination elsewhere, such as education. There is no apparent pattern as to which of traditional and renewable energy that exhibits the smallest gender wage gap.nhhma

Fast Shocks From Magnetic Reconnection Outflows

Magnetic reconnection is commonly perceived to drive flow and particle acceleration in flares of solar, stellar, and astrophysical disk coronae but the relative roles of different acceleration mecha- nisms in a given reconnection environment are not well understood. We show via direct numerical simulations that reconnection outflows produce weak fast shocks, when conditions for fast recon- nection are met and the outflows encounter an obstacle. The associated compression ratios lead to a Fermi acceleration particle spectrum that is significantly steeper than the strong fast shocks commonly studied, but consistent with the demands of solar flares. While this is not the only acceleration mechanism operating in a reconnection environment, it is plausibly a ubiquitous one
