Conductance of a helical edge liquid coupled to a magnetic impurity
Transport in an ideal two-dimensional quantum spin Hall device is dominated
by the counterpropagating edge states of electrons with opposite spins, giving
the universal value of the conductance, . We study the effect on the
conductance of a magnetic impurity, which can backscatter an electron from one
edge state to the other. In the case of isotropic Kondo exchange we find that
the correction to the electrical conductance caused by such an impurity
vanishes in the dc limit, while the thermal conductance does acquire a finite
correction due to the spin-flip backscattering.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figure
Magnetoelastic Coupling in the Spin-Dimer System TlCuCl
We present high-resolution measurements of the thermal expansion and the
magnetostriction of TlCuCl which shows field-induced antiferromagnetic
order. We find pronounced anomalies in the field and temperature dependence of
different directions of the lattice signaling a large magnetoelastic coupling.
The phase boundary is extremely sensitive to pressure, e.g. the transition
field would change by about +/- 185$%/GPa under uniaxial pressure applied along
certain directions. This drastic effect can unambiguously be traced back to
changes of the intradimer coupling under uniaxial pressure. The interdimer
couplings remain essentially unchanged under pressure, but strongly change when
Tl is replaced by K.Comment: 4 pages with 4 figures include
PT-Symmetric Quantum Theory Defined in a Krein Space
We provide a mathematical framework for PT-symmetric quantum theory, which is
applicable irrespective of whether a system is defined on R or a complex
contour, whether PT symmetry is unbroken, and so on. The linear space in which
PT-symmetric quantum theory is naturally defined is a Krein space constructed
by introducing an indefinite metric into a Hilbert space composed of square
integrable complex functions in a complex contour. We show that in this Krein
space every PT-symmetric operator is P-Hermitian if and only if it has
transposition symmetry as well, from which the characteristic properties of the
PT-symmetric Hamiltonians found in the literature follow. Some possible ways to
construct physical theories are discussed within the restriction to the class
K(H).Comment: 8 pages, no figures; Refs. added, minor revisio
Uniaxial pressure dependencies of the phase boundary of TlCuCl_3
We present a thermal expansion and magnetostriction study of TlCuCl_3, which
shows a magnetic-field induced transition from a spin gap phase to a Neel
ordered phase. Using Ehrenfest relations we derive huge and strongly
anisotropic uniaxial pressure dependencies of the respective phase boundary,
e.g. the transition field changes by about GPa depending on the
direction of uniaxial pressure.Comment: 2 pages, e figures; presented at SCES200
Influence of magnetic impurities on charge transport in diffusive-normal-metal / superconductor junctions
Charge transport in the diffusive normal metal (DN) / insulator / - and -wave superconductor junctions is studied in the presence of magnetic
impurities in DN in the framework of the quasiclassical Usadel equations with
the generalized boundary conditions. The cases of - and d-wave
superconducting electrodes are considered. The junction conductance is
calculated as a function of a bias voltage for various parameters of the DN
metal: resistivity, Thouless energy, the magnetic impurity scattering rate and
the transparency of the insulating barrier between DN and a superconductor. It
is shown that the proximity effect is suppressed by magnetic impurity
scattering in DN for any value of the barrier transparency. In low-transparent
s-wave junctions this leads to the suppression of the normalized zero-bias
conductance. In contrast to that, in high transparent junctions zero-bias
conductance is enhanced by magnetic impurity scattering. The physical origin of
this effect is discussed. For the d-wave junctions, the dependence on the
misorientation angle between the interface normal and the crystal axis
of a superconductor is studied. The zero-bias conductance peak is suppressed by
the magnetic impurity scattering only for low transparent junctions with
. In other cases the conductance of the d-wave junctions does
not depend on the magnetic impurity scattering due to strong suppression of the
proximity effect by the midgap Andreev resonant states.Comment: 11 pages, 13 figures;d-wave case adde
High multipole transitions in NIXS: valence and hybridization in 4f systems
Momentum-transfer (q) dependent non-resonant inelastic x-ray scattering
measurements were made at the N4,5 edges for several rare earth compounds. With
increasing q, giant dipole resonances diminish, to be replaced by strong
multiplet lines at lower energy transfer. These multiplets result from two
different orders of multipole scattering and are distinct for systems with
simple 4f^0 and 4f^1 initial states. A many-body theoretical treatment of the
multiplets agrees well with the experimental data on ionic La and Ce phosphate
reference compounds. Comparing measurements on CeO2 and CeRh3 to the theory and
the phosphates indicates sensitivity to hybridization as observed by a
broadening of 4f^0-related multiplet features. We expect such strong, nondipole
features to be generic for NIXS from f-electron systems
Thermal conductivity of the thermoelectric layered cobalt oxides measured by the Harman method
In-plane thermal conductivity of the thermoelectric layered cobalt oxides has
been measured using the Harman method, in which thermal conductivity is
obtained from temperature gradient induced by applied current. We have found
that the charge reservoir block (the block other than the CoO block)
dominates the thermal conduction, where a nano-block integration concept is
effective for material design. We have further found that the thermal
conductivity shows a small but finite in-plane anisotropy between and
axes, which can be ascribed to the misfit structure.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, J. Appl. Phys. (scheduled on July 1, 2004
Field-Induced Magnetic Order and Simultaneous Lattice Deformation in TlCuCl3
We report the results of Cu and Cl nuclear magnetic resonance experiments
(NMR) and thermal expansion measurements in magnetic fields in the coupled
dimer spin system TlCuCl3. We found that the field-induced antiferromagnetic
transition as confirmed by the splitting of NMR lines is slightly
discontinuous. The abrupt change of the electric field gradient at the Cl
sites, as well as the sizable change of the lattice constants, across the phase
boundary indicate that the magnetic order is accompanied by simultaneous
lattice deformation.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
