    Background: Burns are a form of trauma that occurs as a result of human activities in the household, industry, traffic accidents, and natural disasters. The most vulnerable burn sufferers are women because their main role in the family is that many are in contact with fire and electricity such as cooking and ironing. Improper handling of burns can have an impact that will harm the patient.The purpose of this activity is to increase knowledge about burn injuries, as well as appropriate emergency first aid for burns to PT. KP employees.Methods: this program is given with the lecture method, and the presentation of the material uses a laptop audio-visual tool and online media in the form of zoom. After the presentation of the material, it was continued with the screening of a first aid education video for burn injuries, after the video playback was continued with a simulation/demonstration of the procedures for first aid for burn injuries including introducing the types of materials and drugs recommended for first aid burns. The session ends with a question and answer session and evaluationResults: Participants understood the general description of burns and their dangers and participants were able to understand proper first aid treatment. Participants can answer questions from the presenters and discuss the material presented.Conclusion: there is an increase in knowledge and understanding of the dangers of burns and first aid treatment for burns

    Detecting shape change: Characterizing the interaction between texture-defined and contour-defined borders

    The human visual system's extreme sensitivity to subtle changes in shape can often be attributed to global pooling of local information. This has been shown for shapes described by paths of contiguous elements, but it was unknown whether this global pooling translated to shapes defined by texture-segmentation borders. Also, previous research suggests that texture and luminance cues-to-shape are integrated by the visual system for shape detection but it has not been established whether they combined for shape discrimination. Controlled shapes defined either by an explicit path of Gabors, texture-segmentation borders, or both of these cues were used. Results show that all stimuli used were globally processed. Thresholds for shapes defined by both cues matched predictions based on an independent-cue vector sum of individual thresholds. Thus, while local elements are integrated around the contour and are processed by global shape-detection mechanisms, integration did not occur across different shape-cues

    Distribution of COL9A2 and COL9A3 Gene Polymorphism in Male Chinese Singaporean - A Pilot Observational Study

    The association between allelic variants and lumbar disc degenerative disease (DDD) has been investigated in Europe and Northern Asia. However, this has not been investigated in Southeast Asia. This observational study aims to compare the distribution of COL9A2 and COL9A3 gene polymorphism among male Chinese Singaporeans with and without lumbar DDD. COL9A2 gene polymorphism was investigated in p326 (tryptophan 2, Trp2 and glutamine 2, Gln2, alleles) and p335 (valine 2 or Val2 allele). COL9A3 gene polymorphism was investigated in p17 (glycine 3 or Gly3 allele) and p103 (tryptophan 3 or Trp3 allele). The Val2 allele was significantly decreased in the group with lumbar DDD (p < 0.05). No significant difference in allelic distributions of Trp2, Gln2 and Gly3 was found. The Trp3 allele was absent from all the subjects. The presence of at least one Val2 allele appears to have a protective effect against DDD. However, these should be interpreted with caution, given the limitations. Further investigations are warranted in order to verify such genetic predisposition prior to the potential development of preventative or therapeutic strategies in the near future

    Visualization of poly(ADP-ribose) bound to PARG reveals inherent balance between exo- and endo-glycohydrolase activities

    Poly-ADP-ribosylation is a post-translational modification that regulates processes involved in genome stability. Breakdown of the poly(ADP-ribose) (PAR) polymer is catalysed by poly(ADP-ribose) glycohydrolase (PARG), whose endo-glycohydrolase activity generates PAR fragments. Here we present the crystal structure of PARG incorporating the PAR substrate. The two terminal ADP-ribose units of the polymeric substrate are bound in exo-mode. Biochemical and modelling studies reveal that PARG acts predominantly as an exo-glycohydrolase. This preference is linked to Phe902 (human numbering), which is responsible for low-affinity binding of the substrate in endo-mode. Our data reveal the mechanism of poly-ADP-ribosylation reversal, with ADP-ribose as the dominant product, and suggest that the release of apoptotic PAR fragments occurs at unusual PAR/PARG ratios

    Prescribing patterns of low doses of antipsychotic medications in older Asian patients with schizophrenia, 2001-2009

    Background: This study examined the use of low doses of antipsychotic medications (300mg/day CPZeq or less) in older Asian patients with schizophrenia and its demographic and clinical correlates. Methods: Information on hospitalized patients with schizophrenia, aged 55 years or older, was extracted from the database of the Research on Asian Psychotropic Prescription Patterns (REAP) study (2001-2009). Data on 1,452 patients in eight Asian countries and territories including China, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, India, and Malaysia were analyzed. Sociodemographic and clinical characteristics and antipsychotic prescriptions were recorded using a standardized protocol and data collection procedure. Results: The prescription frequency for low doses of antipsychotic medications was 40.9% in the pooled sample. Multiple logistic regression analysis of the whole sample showed that patients on low doses of antipsychotic medications were more likely to be female, have an older age, a shorter length of illness, and less positive symptoms. Of patients in the six countries and territories that participated in all the surveys between 2001 and 2009, those in Japan were less likely to receive low doses of antipsychotics.     Expression signatures of TP53 mutations in serous ovarian cancers

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Mutations in the <it>TP53 </it>gene are extremely common and occur very early in the progression of serous ovarian cancers. Gene expression patterns that relate to mutational status may provide insight into the etiology and biology of the disease.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The <it>TP53 </it>coding region was sequenced in 89 frozen serous ovarian cancers, 40 early stage (I/II) and 49 advanced stage (III/IV). Affymetrix U133A expression data was used to define gene expression patterns by mutation, type of mutation, and cancer stage.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Missense or chain terminating (null) mutations in <it>TP53 </it>were found in 59/89 (66%) ovarian cancers. Early stage cancers had a significantly higher rate of null mutations than late stage disease (38% vs. 8%, p < 0.03). In advanced stage cases, mutations were more prevalent in short term survivors than long term survivors (81% vs. 30%, p = 0.0004). Gene expression patterns had a robust ability to predict <it>TP53 </it>status within training data. By using early versus late stage disease for out of sample predictions, the signature derived from early stage cancers could accurately (86%) predict mutation status of late stage cancers.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>This represents the first attempt to define a genomic signature of <it>TP53 </it>mutation in ovarian cancer. Patterns of gene expression characteristic of <it>TP53 </it>mutation could be discerned and included several genes that are known p53 targets or have been described in the context of expression signatures of <it>TP53 </it>mutation in breast cancer.</p
