    Dissipation of chlorpyrifos in a Malaysian agricultural soil: a comparison between a field experiment and simulation by the VARLEACH and PERSIST models

    A comparison of the dissipation of chlorpyrifos in a Malaysian agricultural soil was undertaken using data from a field experiment and simulation by the PERSIST model. The study was carried out at an oil palm estate located close to the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), Sepang, Selangor (for field experiment). The plots were treated with chlorpyrifos at the manufacturer’s recommended dosage. Soil samples were collected according to the sampling schedule at intervals of 0, 1, 3, 7, 14, 21, 30, 60 and 90 days. Residues of chlorpyrifos in soil from the field trial were analyzed in the laboratory. Simulation of chlorpyrifos leaching and persistency was done using two computer-run software VARLEACH and PERSIST. Generally, predicted data for chlorpyrifos residue obtained using the VARLEACH and PERSIST models was found to be well matched with the observed data from the field trial. The PERSIST Prediction for chlorpyrifos residue in soils planted with oil palm trees was found to be accurate and conformed to the results observed in the field trial

    Design and application of a multi-modal process tomography system

    This paper presents a design and application study of an integrated multi-modal system designed to support a range of common modalities: electrical resistance, electrical capacitance and ultrasonic tomography. Such a system is designed for use with complex processes that exhibit behaviour changes over time and space, and thus demand equally diverse sensing modalities. A multi-modal process tomography system able to exploit multiple sensor modes must permit the integration of their data, probably centred upon a composite process model. The paper presents an overview of this approach followed by an overview of the systems engineering and integrated design constraints. These include a range of hardware oriented challenges: the complexity and specificity of the front end electronics for each modality; the need for front end data pre-processing and packing; the need to integrate the data to facilitate data fusion; and finally the features to enable successful fusion and interpretation. A range of software aspects are also reviewed: the need to support differing front-end sensors for each modality in a generic fashion; the need to communicate with front end data pre-processing and packing systems; the need to integrate the data to allow data fusion; and finally to enable successful interpretation. The review of the system concepts is illustrated with an application to the study of a complex multi-component process

    According to Roman scripture, it was Celsus who attempted the first inguinal hernia repair in history during the first century A.D. His attempts were unsuccessful and resulted in an early recurrence of the hernia, which eventually led to the patient’s death.1 Over the next two millennia, little understanding was gained regarding the anatomy of the inguinal canal. It was only in the last 100 years that major advancements in herniorrhaphy were established, thanks in large part to the work of Edoardo Bassini, who revolutionized the surgical treatment of the inguinal hernia with a technique which has become the basis of modern-day herniorrhaphy

    Outcome of Percutaneous Nephrostomy for the Management of Pyonephrosis

    ObjectiveThe aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of percutaneous nephrostomy (PCN) drainage for the interim management of pyonephrosis.MethodsNinety-two consecutive patients (29 men, 63 women; mean age, 57 years; range, 23-88) who underwent PCN for the treatment of pyonephrosis from 1996 to 1999 were evaluated retrospectively. The clinical presentation, bacteriology and patient outcomes were analyzed.ResultsThe majority (77%) of patients had underlying obstructing urinary calculi. Other causes of obstruction included strictures (9%), papillary necrosis (7%), pelvi-ureteric junction obstruction (4%) and malignant stricture (3%). The microorganisms cultured were Escherichia coli (30%), Klebsiella (19%), Proteus (8%), Pseudomonas (5%), Enterococcus (5%), and Candida spp (5%). The microorganisms were sensitive to gentamicin (79%), ceftriaxone (71%), cephalexin (54%), nitrofurantoin (40%), cotrimoxazole (35%), nalidixic acid (32%) and ampicillin (29%). Only 30% of bladder urine cultures were positive for microorganisms; the addition of PCN cultures improved this yield to 58%. The antibiotic regimen was revised according to the PCN culture whenever there was a discrepancy. After PCN, 69% of patients underwent minimally invasive procedures as definitive treatment of the obstructing lesion. Only 14% of patients required open surgery. There was low procedure-related morbidity (14%) and low overall mortality (2%).ConclusionsPCN cultures yield important bacteriological information. The procedure is associated with minimal morbidity, facilitates definitive treatment and provides therapeutic benefit. (Asian J Surg 2002;25(3):215-9

    Analysis of Wnt signaling β-catenin spatial dynamics in HEK293T cells

    Background Wnt/β-catenin signaling is involved in different stages of mammalian development and implicated in various cancers (e.g. colorectal cancer). Recent experimental and computational studies have revealed characteristics of the pathway, however a cell-specific spatial perspective is lacking. In this study, a novel 3D confocal quantitation protocol is developed to acquire spatial (two cellular compartments: nucleus and cytosol-membrane) and temporal quantitative data on target protein (e.g. β-catenin) concentrations in Human Epithelial Kidney cells (HEK293T) during perturbation (with either cycloheximide or Wnt3A). Computational models of the Wnt pathway are constructed and interrogated based on this data. Results A single compartment Wnt pathway model is compared with a simple β-catenin two compartment model to investigate Wnt3A signaling in HEK293T cells. When protein synthesis is inhibited, β-catenin decreases at the same rate in both cellular compartments, suggesting diffusional transport is fast compared to β-catenin degradation in the cytosol. With Wnt3A stimulation, the total amount of β-catenin rises throughout the cell, however the increase is initially (~first hour) faster in the nuclear compartment. While both models were able to reproduce the whole cell changes in β-catenin, only the compartment model reproduced the Wnt3A induced changes in β-catenin distribution and it was also the best fit for the data obtained when active transport was included alongside passive diffusion transport. Conclusions This integrated 3D quantitation imaging protocol and computational modeling approach allowed cell-specific compartment models of the signaling pathways to be constructed and analyzed. The Wnt models constructed in this study are the first for HEK293T and have suggested potential roles of inter-compartment transport to the dynamics of signaling

    Colon cryptogenesis: Asymmetric budding

    The process of crypt formation and the roles of Wnt and cell-cell adhesion signaling in cryptogenesis are not well described; but are important to the understanding of both normal and cancer colon crypt biology. A quantitative 3D-microscopy and image analysis technique is used to study the frequency, morphology and molecular topography associated with crypt formation. Measurements along the colon reveal the details of crypt formation and some key underlying biochemical signals regulating normal colon biology. Our measurements revealed an asymmetrical crypt budding process, contrary to the previously reported symmetrical fission of crypts. 3D immunofluorescence analyses reveals heterogeneity in the subcellular distribution of E-cadherin and β-catenin in distinct crypt populations. This heterogeneity was also found in asymmetrical budding crypts. Singular crypt formation (i.e. no multiple new crypts forming from one parent crypt) were observed in crypts isolated from the normal colon mucosa, suggestive of a singular constraint mechanism to prevent aberrant crypt production. The technique presented improves our understanding of cryptogenesis and suggests that excess colon crypt formation occurs when Wnt signaling is perturbed (e.g. by truncation of adenomatous polyposis coli, APC protein) in most colon cancers

    Experimental Study on Condition Monitoring of Low Speed Bearings : Time Domain Analysis

    In condition monitoring of low speed rolling element bearings (REBs), traditional techniques involving vibration acceleration may not be able to detect a growing fault due to the low impact energy generated by the relative motion of the components. This study presents an experimental evaluation for incipient fault detection of low speed REBs by using an acoustic emission (AE) sensor and an accelerometer. A low speed fault simulation test rig was developed to simulate common machine faults with shaft speeds as low as 10rpm under loading conditions. Tests were conducted on the rig with various seeded defect bearings. This study reveals the best frequency bandwidth and suitable parameters for condition monitoring using AE signal for early detection of low speed bearing defects by means of statistical parameters in time domain

    An InGaAlAs-InGaAs two-color photodetector for ratio thermometry

    We report the evaluation of a molecular-beam epitaxy grown two-color photodetector for radiation thermometry. This two-color photodetector consists of two p+in+ diodes, an In0.53Ga0.25Al0.22As (hereafter InGaAlAs) p+in+ diode, which has a cutoff wavelength of 1180 nm, and an In0.53Ga0.47As (hereafter InGaAs) p+in+ diode with a cutoff wavelength of 1700 nm. Our simple monolithic integrated two-color photodetector achieved comparable output signal and signal-to-noise (SNR) ratio to that of a commercial two-color Si-InGaAs photodetector. The InGaAlAs and InGaAs diodes detect blackbody temperature as low as 275°C and 125°C, respectively, with an SNR above 10. The temperature errors extracted from our data are 4°C at 275°C for the InGaAlAs diode and 2.3°C at 125°C for the InGaAs diode. As a ratio thermometer, our two-color photodetector achieves a temperature error of 12.8°C at 275°C, but this improves with temperature to 0.1°C at 450°C. These results demonstrated the potential of InGaAlAs-InGaAs two-color photodetector for the development of high performance two-color array detectors for radiation thermometry and thermal imaging of hot objects

    Health beliefs in oral cancer: Malaysian estate Indian scenario

    This is a study to describe the health beliefs related to oral cancer (OC) in a high-risk group in Malaysia, a predominantly Indian community living in an agricultural setting called an estate. The study population was a convenient sample of 112 adults, above 20 years of age, attending oral cancer screening in two estates. The subjects consisted of 106 (94.6) Indians and six (5.4) Malays. Using the Health Belief Model, the perceptions of susceptibility to OC, its severity, and the benefits of and barriers to preventive actions, as well as beliefs underlying OC aetiology were investigated. About half of the subjects (n = 57, 50.9) felt susceptible to oral cancer. A majority of subjects (n = 93, 83.0) felt that oral cancer is a severe disease. Thirty four people (30.4) perceived OC as a preventable disease, while 56 (50) did not, and the remaining 22 (19.6) did not know if OC was preventable or not. The majority of subjects (84.8) believed that modifications to the betel quid habit could be beneficial. The information solicited can be used as a starting point to design health-education activities aimed at this group in particular and the population in general. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ireland Ltd.
