    Tracking down the migration of mouse neural crest cells

    During early embryonic development, cell migration is one of the most important morphogenetic processes. Neural crest cells arise from the dorsal part of the neural tube and migrate along different pathways to numerous locations where they differentiate into a variety of tissues. In the mouse, studies of neural crest cell migration have been difficult partly because of the absence of specific markers which can label neural crest cells throughout their migration from their origin to the site of differentiation. Nevertheless, the use of different experimental strategies involving extrinsic, intrinsic or genetic cell markers has already led to a good understanding of this migration. In our studies, extrinsic markers such as wheat germ agglutinin-gold conjugates and DiI and genetic markers including Hoxb2-lacZ and green fluorescent protein have been employed in tracing migrating neural crest cells.     The use of sublimable chlorotricarbonyl bis(phenylimino)acenaphthene rhenium(I) complexes as photosensitizers in bulk-heterojunction photovoltaic devices

    A series of sublimable substituted chlorotricarbonyl bis(phenylimino)acenaphthene rhenium(I) complexes was synthesized and used in the fabrication of photovoltaic devices. The hole and electron carrier mobilities of these complexes are in the order of 10-3 to 10-4 cm2 V-1 s-1. Heterojunction devices with CuPc/complex/C60 (CuPc = copper phthalocyanine) as the active layer and bulk heterojunction devices with complex:C60 as the active layer were fabricated. The rhenium complexes function as photosensitizer in the devices, and exhibit optical absorption in the region between 500 and 550 nm within which other components in the device do not absorb. Other devices with hole transport materials, exciton blocking materials, and different active layer thickness were also fabricated. Variation of substitution groups in the ligand did not show significant difference in device performance.     A pareto multi-objective optimization approach for solving time-cost-quality tradeoff problems

    Speeding up a project's duration will definitely increase the cost and decrease the quality. The previous literatures were mainly related to project planning and controlling which mainly focus on cost-time tradeoff. However, limited researches have been referred to project quality based on mathematical methodologies. This paper proposes a tradeoff problem on time-cost-quality performance. A computer-based Pareto multi-objective optimization approach is utilized for solving the tradeoff problems. The approach can help searching near the reality Pareto-optimal set while not receiving any information on the stakeholders’ preference for time, cost and quality. Based on the developed approach, decision-making can become easy according to the sorted non-dominated solutions and project preferences

    Comparative analysis on international construction and demolition waste management policies and laws for policy makers in China

    In the current age of enhanced environmental awareness, transformation to sustainable management in the construction sector is needed. China currently produces the largest amount of construction and demolition (C&D) waste around the world, but the average recovery rate of the waste was only about 5% in 2017. In order to investigate problems in current C&D waste management in China, a cross-national comparative analysis is conducted among China and seven selected countries (Japan, South Korea, Germany, Italy, Austria, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom), to compare legal texts of national policies and laws which relate to C&D waste management and are currently being used. Through the comparison, problems in management of C&D waste in China are investigated. The problems could be concluded to: (a) inadequate guidance on recycling, (b) lack of market incentives in utilising recycled materials, (c) incomplete knowledge of stakeholders’ responsibilities, (d) lack of penalty for other stakeholders, and (e) inefficient supervision system. By understanding these problems, this paper further provides recommendations to enhance the performance of C&D waste management in China

    Improving corporate governance in state-owned corporations in China: which way forward?

    This article discusses corporate governance in China. It outlines the basic agency problem in Chinese listed companies and questions the effectiveness of the current mechanisms employed to improve their standards of governance. Importantly, it considers alternative means through which corporate practice in China can be brought into line with international expectations and stresses the urgency with which this task must be tackled. It concludes that regulators in China must construct a corporate governance model which is compatible with its domestic setting and not rush to adopt governance initiatives modelled on those in cultures which are fundamentally different in the hope of also reproducing their success
