    Axion Dark Matter and Cosmological Parameters

    We observe that photon cooling after big bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) but before recombination can remove the conflict between the observed and theoretically predicted value of the primordial abundance of 7^7Li. Such cooling is ordinarily difficult to achieve. However, the recent realization that dark matter axions form a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) provides a possible mechanism, because the much colder axions may reach thermal contact with the photons. This proposal predicts a high effective number of neutrinos as measured by the cosmic microwave anisotropy spectrum.Comment: 4 pages, one figure. Version to appear in Phys. Rev.     Thin shell implies spectral gap up to polylog via a stochastic localization scheme

    We consider the isoperimetric inequality on the class of high-dimensional isotropic convex bodies. We establish quantitative connections between two well-known open problems related to this inequality, namely, the thin shell conjecture, and the conjecture by Kannan, Lovasz, and Simonovits, showing that the corresponding optimal bounds are equivalent up to logarithmic factors. In particular we prove that, up to logarithmic factors, the minimal possible ratio between surface area and volume is attained on ellipsoids. We also show that a positive answer to the thin shell conjecture would imply an optimal dependence on the dimension in a certain formulation of the Brunn-Minkowski inequality. Our results rely on the construction of a stochastic localization scheme for log-concave measures.Comment: 33 page

    The Fundamental Plane of Gamma-ray Globular Clusters

    We have investigated the properties of a group of γ\gamma-ray emitting globular clusters (GCs) which have recently been uncovered in our Galaxy. By correlating the observed γ\gamma-ray luminosities LγL_{\gamma} with various cluster properties, we probe the origin of the high energy photons from these GCs. We report LγL_{\gamma} is positively correlated with the encounter rate Γc\Gamma_{c} and the metalicity [Fe/H]\left[{\rm Fe/H}\right] which place an intimate link between the gamma-ray emission and the millisecond pulsar population. We also find a tendency that LγL_{\gamma} increase with the energy densities of the soft photon at the cluster location. Furthermore, the two-dimensional regression analysis suggests that LγL_{\gamma}, soft photon densities, and Γc\Gamma_{c}/[Fe/H]\left[{\rm Fe/H}\right] possibly span fundamental planes which potentially provide better predictions for the γ\gamma-ray properties of GCs.Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures, 3 tables, published in Ap

    Ten Simple Rules for Running a Successful women-in-STEM Organization on an Academic Campus

    The current academic culture facing women in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields in the United States has sparked the formation of grassroots advocacy groups to empower female scientists in training. However, the impact of these initiatives often goes unmeasured and underappreciated. Our Women in Science and Engineering (WiSE) organization serves postdoctoral researchers, graduate students, and research technicians (trainees) at a private research institute for biological sciences. Here we propose the following guidelines for cultivating a successful women-in-STEM-focused group based upon survey results from our own scientific community as well as the experience of our WiSE group leaders. We hope these recommendations can provide guidance to advocacy groups at other research and academic organizations that wish to strengthen their efforts. Whereas our own group specifically focuses on the underrepresented state of women in science, we hope these guidelines may be adapted and applied to groups that advocate for any minority group within the greater scientific community (i.e., those of gender, race/ethnicity, socioeconomic background, sexual orientation, etc.)

    International audienceHake (Merluccius gayi peruanus) predation plays an important role in the dynamics of the Humboldt Current ecosystem (HCE). Changes in the hake trophic habits associated with physical variability are expected to impact prey populations and to propagate through the food web. Time series (1995?2002) of (a) stomach contents of hake, (b) biomass estimations of fish prey species of hake, and (c) depth of the 15°C isotherm was analysed with the aim of exploring the impacts of El Niño 1997?1998 on the diet of hake. Biomass estimations of fish prey species were used to indicate resource availability, and depth of the 15°C isotherm to represent variability associated with the ENSO cycle in the physical environment of hake. The richness of prey species increased during the months when 15°C isotherm reached its deepest position, supporting the hypothesis of increased biodiversity (tropicalization) of the HCE during El Niño events. An increased variability in stomach fullness of hake was detected after 1999 which could indicate high heterogeneity in the food supply as a consequence of impacts of the warm event in the biotic community structure of the HCE, a physiological impairment of hake or an effect of the abrupt reduction in the mean total length of hake, postulated as a compensatory response to fishery pressure. Hake can be characterized as an opportunist predator according to the observed changes in its diet during 1995?2002. Overall, the diet of hake in the northern HCE exhibited transitory (e.g. increased richness of prey species in the stomach contents) and medium term (e.g. increased variability in feeding activity) responses associated with El Niño 1997?1998, which should be incorporated both in population dynamics and food web analyses

    Cosmic axion thermalization

    Axions differ from the other cold dark matter candidates in that they form a degenerate Bose gas. It is shown that their huge quantum degeneracy and large correlation length cause cold dark matter axions to thermalize through gravitational self-interactions when the photon temperature reaches approximately 500 eV. When they thermalize, the axions form a Bose-Einstein condensate. Their thermalization occurs in a regime, herein called the `condensed regime', where the Boltzmann equation is not valid because the energy dispersion of the particles is smaller than their interaction rate. We derive analytical expressions for the thermalization rate of particles in the condensed regime, and check the validity of these expressions by numerical simulation of a toy model. We revisit axion cosmology in light of axion Bose-Einstein condensation. It is shown that axions are indistinguishable from ordinary cold dark matter on all scales of observational interest, except when they thermalize or rethermalize. The rethermalization of axions that are about to fall in a galactic potential well causes them to acquire net overall rotation as they go to the lowest energy state consistent with the total angular momentum they acquired by tidal torquing. This phenomenon explains the occurrence of caustic rings of dark matter in galactic halos. We find that photons may reach thermal contact with axions and investigate the implications of this possibility for the measurements of cosmological parameters.Comment: 38 pages, 1 figur

    Design of electric field controlled molecular gates mounted on metal–organic frameworks

    In this study we propose and computationally demonstrate the concept of electric field controlled molecular gates mounted on the open-metal coordination sites in metal–organic framework (MOF) materials. The MOF-molecular gate complex functions by opening and closing under the effect of an electric field. Our design involves Mg-MOF-74, a MOF with hexagonal channels with open-metal coordination sites at each corner, and a multifunctional gate molecule with permanent dipole which anchors itself on the host MOF material and responds to changes in the direction of an electric field by rotating around its backbone which acts as an axle. By carrying out density functional theory (DFT) calculations and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations we show that the MOF-molecular gate complex can be switched between two stable configurations, open and closed, by turning on and off an external electric field. We further show that the molecular gate can be controlled to block or allow the diffusion of methane molecules through the channels of the MOF like a nanoscale butterfly valve. Electric field controlled molecular gates mounted on MOFs can pave the way for new molecular machines and nanodevices which can store, deliver or select molecules on demand and with atomic precision

    Effect of metal poisoning and the implications of gender and age on the elemental composition in patients with mental behavioural disorders

    The objective of this work was to investigate the possible correlation between the exposure to selected toxic metals and the behavioural disorder of mentally ill patients. The study also sought to establish if gender and age of the patient had an effect on the pattern of the elemental distribution in their head hair and blood samples. To achieve this, the concentrations of a number of selected toxic metal elements were determined in 60 mentally ill patients and 43 healthy individuals (control) in Ile-Ife area, in Nigeria, using inductively coupled plasma spectrophotometer-optical emission spectrometer (ICP-OES). The behavioural disorder cases investigated were 8 bipolar, 2 post partum psychosis, 43 schizophrenia and 7 non-specific cases. The concentration ranges of Cu, Zn, Ca, Li, V, Be (for both males and females), Cd and Sr (for females only) as analyzed from the patients’ head hair with behavioural disorders, were found to be similar with those of the controls. However, the concentration ranges of Al, Ba, Mg, Cr and Cd, Sr (for males only) were higher in patients than in the controls, while those for K and Fe were found to be higher in the controls than in the patients for both males and females. Blood samples analysis showed that, nearly all the elements were higher in the female (patients and control) than in the males; a possible indication that women may be at greater risk than men. It was also shown that, age may have an influence on the accumulation of some specific elements. The accuracy of the analytical results was experimentally demonstrated by NCS DC 73347 certified reference material that was analyzed along the standards while the significance of the data obtained was tested statistically at both p = 0.01 and 0.05.Key words: Toxic metals, behavioural disorder, gender, age, inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometer

    Observing two dark accelerators around the Galactic Centre with Fermi Large Area Telescope

    We report the results from a detailed γ\gamma-ray investigation in the field of two "dark accelerators", HESS J1745-303 and HESS J1741-302, with 6.96.9 years of data obtained by the Fermi Large Area Telescope. For HESS J1745-303, we found that its MeV-GeV emission is mainly originated from the "Region A" of the TeV feature. Its γ\gamma-ray spectrum can be modeled with a single power-law with a photon index of Γ2.5\Gamma\sim2.5 from few hundreds MeV to TeV. Moreover, an elongated feature, which extends from "Region A" toward northwest for 1.3\sim1.3^{\circ}, is discovered for the first time. The orientation of this feature is similar to that of a large scale atomic/molecular gas distribution. For HESS J1741-302, our analysis does not yield any MeV-GeV counterpart for this unidentified TeV source. On the other hand, we have detected a new point source, Fermi J1740.1-3013, serendipitously. Its spectrum is apparently curved which resembles that of a γ\gamma-ray pulsar. This makes it possibly associated with PSR B1737-20 or PSR J1739-3023.Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in MNRA
