Suomalaisten tutkijoiden sosiaalisen median käyttö: sosiaalisen median merkitys työssä, tiedonhankinnassa ja tieteellisen tiedon jakamisessa

The use of social media in scholarly communication has grown in recent years, and consequently, scholars’ uses of social media has gained importance as a research topic.The aim of this article is to shed light on the role of social media in scholars’ work. The research presents findings from a survey (N=528) conducted in Finland in late 2016. There exists no prior research on the role and uses social media among Finnish scholars. This research specifically focuses on the perceived role of social media in information seeking and sharing. We also study the differences between disciplines, age groups, and positions. Results show that scholars do not perceive social media as being central for their or information seeking and sharing, and that social media services are not replacing traditional publishing forums. Scholars do appreciate the social media services intended and developed for academic use, and find them as having value for their work than general social media services. However, according to our results, social media services have a marginal role in scholars’ information seeking and scholars infrequently share their readings in social media platforms. Some disciplinary differences existed, but there was no connection between scholars’ age or position and the role of social media. Our study shows that the role of social media in academic work and scholarly communication is still rather small. Further research is needed to find out what are the reasons for scholars lack of interest towards social media

Dane badawcze – usługi europejskich bibliotek akademickich

Research data is an essential part of the scholarly record, and management of research data is increasingly seen as an important role for academic libraries. This article presents the results of a survey of directors of the Association of European Research Libraries (LIBER) academic member libraries to discover what types of research data services (RDS) are being offered by European academic research libraries and what services are planned for the future. Overall, the survey found that library directors strongly agree on the importance of RDS. As was found in earlier studies of academic libraries in North America, more European libraries are currently offering or are planning to offer consultative or reference RDS than technical or hands-on RDS. The majority of libraries provide support for training in skills related to RDS for their staff members. Almost all libraries collaborate with other organizations inside their institutions or with outside institutions in order to offer or develop policy related to RDS. We discuss the implications of the current state of RDS in European academic research libraries, and offer directions for future research.Dane badawcze są istotną częścią pracy naukowej, a zarządzanie danymi naukowymi jest coraz częściej postrzegane jako ważna rola bibliotek akademickich. W niniejszym artykule przedstawiono wy­niki ankiety przeprowadzonej wśród dyrektorów bibliotek akademickich zrzeszonych w organizacji LIBER (Stowarzyszenie Europejskich Bibliotek Naukowych) w celu sprawdzenia, jakiego typu usługi (RDS - rese­arch data services) oferują europejskie biblioteki naukowe oraz jakie są planowane w przyszłości. Ankieta pokazała, że dyrektorzy bibliotek zdecydowanie zgadzają się co do znaczenia RDS. Jak stwierdzono we wcześniejszych badaniach bibliotek akademickich w Ameryce Północnej, większa liczba bibliotek europejskich oferu­je obecnie lub planuje doradztwo oraz informowanie w zakresie danych badawczych niż pomoc techniczną lub praktyczną. Większość bibliotek zapewnia wsparcie szkoleniowe dla swoich pracowników w zakresie umiejętności związanych z RDS. Prawie wszystkie biblioteki współpracują z innymi organizacjami wewnątrz swoich instytucji lub z instytucjami zewnętrznymi w celu oferowania lub opracowywania polityki związanej z RDS. Muksunetti kasvatuskumppanuuden välineenä

Tässä opinnäytetyössä tutkittiin vanhempien kokemuksia Hyvinkään kaupungin päiväkotien käyttämästä sähköisestä viestintävälineestä, Muksunetistä. Päätutkimuskysymys oli, millä tavoin Hyvinkään kaupungin varhaiskasvatuspalveluissa olevien lasten vanhemmat kokevat Muksunetin kasvatuskumppanuuden välineenä. Tätä kysymystä tutkittiin selvittämällä vanhempien käyttöaktii-visuuteen johtavia seikkoja ja käyttömieltymyksiä. Opinnäytetyömme tavoitteena oli siis selvittää, mitä mieltä vanhemmat ovat Muksunetistä ja sen käytöstä. Tarkoituksena oli myös tuottaa tietoa Hyvinkään kaupungin varhaiskasvatuspalveluille vanhempien Muksunetti-kokemuksista, jotta ohjelmaa voitaisiin tulevaisuudessa kehittää nykyistä asiakaslähtöisempään suuntaan. Opinnäytetyö toteutettiin kvantitatiivisena tutkimuksena seitsemässä Hyvinkään kaupungin päiväkotiyksikössä. Aineistonkeruumenetelmänä käytimme kyselyä, joka toteutettiin helmikuussa 2014. Kyselyitä jaettiin päiväkoteihin yhteensä 530 kappaletta ja 210 vanhempaa vastasi kyselyyn. Suurin osa vastaajista oli perheen äitejä. Monivalintakysymyksien vastauksia analysoimme SPSS-ohjelman avulla keskiarvomuuttujia ja ristiintaulukointia käyttämällä. Strukturoidussa kyselylomakkeessa oli myös avoimia kysymyksiä. Tämän aineiston analyysi toteutettiin käyttämällä aineistolähtöistä sisällönanalyysiä. Tutkimuksen tuloksista on näkyvissä se, että Muksunetti jakaa paljon mielipiteitä Hyvinkään kaupungin varhaiskasvatuspalveluissa olevien lasten vanhempien keskuudessa. Kasvatuskumppanuuden näkökulmasta Muksunettiä tärkeämmäksi koetaan päivittäin tapahtuva aito vuorovaikutuksellinen keskustelu kasvattajien kanssa. Moni kokee tämän kasvotusten tapahtuvan kohtaamisen jopa niin riittäväksi, ettei Muksunettiä koeta päiväkotiympäristössä välttämättömäksi. Vanhemmat kokevat Muksunetin sisällön pääosin melko hyväksi, mutta käytön vaikeus vähentää vanhempien käyttöaktiivisuutta. Erityisesti huonoksi koettu käyttöliittymä sai vanhemmilta moitteita hitaudesta, toimimattomuudesta ja epäloogisuudesta. Tuloksista käy myös ilmi, että vanhempien mielestä Muksunettiä on tulevaisuudessa syytä kehittää. Vanhemmilla olikin paljon kehittämistoiveita, joilla Muksunetistä saataisiin tulevaisuudessa käyttäjäystävällisempi. Erityisesti vastanneiden keskuudessa toivottiin Muksunetin salasanan vaihtomahdollisuutta, automaattista sähköposti-ilmoitusta Muksunettiin tulevasta materiaalista sekä Muksunetin kehittämistä älypuhelinystävällisempään suuntaan.In the thesis we studied parents’ experience in the computer program Muksunetti (“Kid Net”) used in the daycare centers of Hyvinkää City. Our main research subject was to find out, how the parents of children attending the daycare centers of Hyvinkää City experienced Muksunetti as an instrument of upbringing partnership. We studied this subject by looking into things that affected the utilization and usage preferences of the parents. The aim of our thesis was thus to find out, what the parents thought about Muksunetti and using it. Our aim was also to provide information about the parents’ experience in Muksunetti for the early childhood education system of Hyvinkää City to be used improving the application to be more customer-oriented. The thesis was carried out as a quantitative survey in seven day care centers of Hyvinkää City. We collected the material of the survey by using a paper-based questionnaire. The survey took place in February 2014. We distributed 530 questionnaires in the daycare centers, and 210 parents returned a completed questionnaire. Most of those responding were mothers. We analyzed the multiple-choice answers with SPSS-program using mean variables and cross-tabulation. The structured questionnaire had also open questions. The analysis of the material was carried out using material based contents analysis. The results of the survey show that Muksunetti arises many divided opinions among the parents whose children attend the early childhood education services of Hyvinkää City. From the point of view of the upbringing partnership the parents see a daily, genuine interactive conversation with the caregivers as the most important. Many of them see this face-to-face encounter to be so sufficient that they do not feel Muksunetti to be necessary in the daycare center system. The parents felt that the contents of Muksunetti is for the most part quite good, but difficulty in using the application diminishes parents’ using activity. In particular, the user interface was felt to be unsatisfactory, and arose many comments from the parents for being slow, dysfunctional and illogical. The results also show that parents feel a need of further development of Muksunetti in the future. The parents had many specific wishers for improvement to make Muksunetti more user friendly. Those answered specially wished for a function for password change, automatic email notice for new material in Muksunetti and an application compatible with smartphones

"Elämän pituiset jäähyväiset" - INCL-yhdistyksen kokemukset INCL-lapsen vanhempien jaksamisesta ja tukemisesta

Lapsen sairastuminen kuolemaan johtavaan sairauteen on merkittävä muutos koko perheen elämässä. Lapsen INCL-sairaus laajana oirekuvanaan heikentää vanhempien jaksamista monella osa-alueella ja oireiden edetessä lapsen hoito on yhä vaativampaa. INCL-sairauteen ei ole parantavaa hoitoa ja se johtaa ennenaikaiseen kuolemaan lapsuusiässä. Diagnoosin saatuaan vanhemmat joutuvat tekemään surutyötä koko lapsen lyhyen eliniän ajan. INCL-yhdistys kokoaa yhteen INCL-perheet ja pyrkii tarjoamaan heille tarvitsemaansa tukea. Opinnäytetyön tarkoituksena oli kuvata vanhempien jaksamista lapsen INCL-sairauden kanssa INCL-yhdistyksen näkökulmasta. Opinnäytetyön tavoitteena oli tuottaa tietoa INCL-yhdistyksen kautta vanhempien jaksamisesta ja tukemisesta lapsen INCL-sairauden kanssa. Tiedon avulla voidaan tukea vanhempien jaksamista sairauden etenemisen aikana sekä lapsen kuoleman jälkeen. Opinnäytetyö toteutettiin kvalitatiivisena tutkimuksena. Vastaajina toimivat halukkaat INCL-yhdistyksen jäsenet ja vastauksia kyselylomakkeen avoimiin kysymyksiin saatiin neljä. Aineisto on analysoitu aineistolähtöisellä sisällönanalyysillä. Tuloksista ilmeni, että vanhempien jaksamiseen vaikuttavat tukevat, heikentävät ja yksilölliset tekijät. INCL-yhdistys tukee vanhempien jaksamista mahdollistamalla vertaistuen ja konkreettisen avun saamisen. Johtopäätöksenä opinnäytetyön tuloksista voidaan todeta, että INCL-lapsen vanhempien jaksaminen on koetuksella monella eri tavalla. INCL-yhdistyksen kautta perheet saavat monenlaista tukea, joista tärkeimpänä INCL-yhdistyksen jäsenet mainitsevat vertaistuen. Tutkimuksia sekä INCL-sairaudesta että vanhempien saamasta tuesta tarvitaan, jotta tietoa sairaudesta voidaan lisätä ja vanhempien tukea kohdistaa oikeanlaiseksi

Desired Affordances of Scholarly E-Articles : Views from Scholars Based on Open-Ended Answers

E-journals are constantly evolving and adding new features, however, scholars’ views of desired features of scholarly e-articles have not received much attention. Scholars’ opinions were studied as part of two scholarly reading surveys conducted in Finland in 2016 and internationally in 2018. Respondents were asked “What features would you like to see in e-scholarly articles in the future” and “How have your reading practices changed in the last few years and how do you expect them to change”. A qualitative thematic analysis of 588 open-ended comments to these questions was performed. Themes discussed in open ended comments concern availability and accessibility; readability, searchability, findability, and discoverability; sharing and collaboration affordances; and seamlessness between reading and writing. Respondents also discussed affordances such as more visual materials, more interactivity, easier export of references, links to original research data, open commenting, open peer review, possibility to update articles, links to authors’ social media sites, and templates for secondary and meta-analysis.
