    NUSAT 1 methods for radar field strength measurement

    The methods for obtaining the gain pattern of an Air Traffic Control Radar using the data collected by NUSAT 1 are presented. The basic equations for this are given; these require an independently determined satellite attitude. In addition we show how simultaneous measurements made by separate channels can be related to obtain a single axis attitude, i.e., the direction of propagation of the incident radiation, and the power density of the radiation. This is done by solving a system of three algebraic equations

    A Kampfschwert from the 15th century – a reinterpretation of the so called ‘Teutonic estoc’ from the Princes Czartoryski Collection in Cracow, Poland

    The paper aims at reinterpreting the so called ‘Teutonic estoc’ (inventory number: MNK XIV-49) from the Czartoryski Princes Collection, Cracow, Poland. Due to the weapon’s unusual construction it has been necessary to draw up precise documentation - written, drawn and photographic. It has been supplemented with research in historical sources and scholarly literature on the subject. The results obtained indicate that the researched weapon is not a typical estoc. It seems that it is a specialized anti-armour sword (Kampfschwert in German) designed for fighting against a heavy armoured opponent in judicial combat. If this conclusion were correct, the ‘Teutonic estoc’ from Cracow would be the only known artefact of this kind to have survived from the Middle Ages. In order to falsify this hypothesis the artefact’s authenticity has been examined. An analysis of Royal Inventory records spanning from the year 1475 to 1792 and younger remarks about the researched weapon in press, private letters and scholarly literature has been conducted and briefly reported hereby. Its results seem to indicate that it is not a hoax

    Exploiting Data Locality in Dynamic Web Applications

    The Internet has grown from a static document retrieval system to a dynamic medium where users are both consumers and producers of information. Users may experience above-average website latencies due to the physical distances information must travel. Because user satisfaction is related to a website\u27s responsiveness, e-commerce may be hindered and prevent online businesses from reaching their full potential. This dissertation analyzes how temporal and relational dependencies in web applications limit their ability to become distributed. Two contributions are made, the first showing the location of data inside a datacenter influences the web system\u27s performance, and secondly, that relaxing strict consistency inside the web application at a fine- grained level can greatly lower latencies for geographically diverse users. Experiments are used to show when and how much these optimizations can benefit a dynamic web application

    The human skin is inhabited by many species of bacteria and fungi, which are its natural microbiota. Fungi colonizing the skin, including those causing disease, characterized by great variety and variability, can be influenced by various factors. The purpose of this study was to investigate the composition of the non-lipid-dependent fungal microbiota of skin, including the presence of species potentially pathogenic for humans. Fifty-six volunteers of both sexes aged 22–78 were subjected to the study. Swabs were taken from the face, chest, back and interdigital spaces of hands. Mycobiota isolated proved to vary both in terms of the location of occurrence and gender of patients. Interdigital spaces of hands, dominated by yeasts, constitute a location on human skin most contaminated with fungi. Molds were more often isolated from the face and chest. The back was the least contaminated location. There was no difference in fungal incidence in relation to sex

    Strong (X)HTML Compliance with Haskell\u27s Flexible Type System

    We report on the embedding of a domain specific language, (X)HTML, into Haskell and demonstrate how this superficial non-context-free language can be represented and rendered to guarantee World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) compliance. Compliance of web content is important for the health of the Internet, accessibility, visibility, and reliable search. While tools exist to verify web content is compliant according to the W3C, few systems guarantee that all produced content is compliant. We present CH-(X)HTML, a library for generating compliant (X)HTML content by using Haskell to encode the nontrivial syntax of (X)HTML set forth by the W3C. Any compliant document can be represented with this library, while a compilation error will occur if non-compliant markup is attempted. To demonstrate our library we present examples and performance measurements

    Quality in peer production systems – impact of assortativity of communication networks on group efficacy

    Many online peer production systems (e.g. Wikipedia or Open Source Software communities) strive to deliver high quality intellectual goods that could compare with commercial products. While quality is key to the communities’ success – widespread adoption of their products – it is not clear what makes some succeed, while others provide subpar outcomes or fail entirely. Quality of Wikipedia articles has been previously related to the number of editors writing them or to the diversity of editors’ competences. Here we tested the hypothesis that cohesiveness of private communication networks within collaborating groups increases the quality of their products. We analyzed communication within a sample of Wikiprojects on the English Wikipedia – groups of editors that coordinate their activities to improve articles related to a specific topic. We found that most Wikiprojects communicate in a highly hierarchical, disassortative way, but the successful ones break this trend and their communication networks are structured in a more egalitarian way
