The boson peak in structural and orientational glasses of simple alcohols: Specific heat at low temperatures
We review in this work specific-heat experiments, that we have conducted on
different hydrogen-bonded glasses during last years. Specifically, we have
measured the low-temperature specific heat Cp for a set of glassy alcohols:
normal and fully-deuterated ethanol, 1- and 2- propanol, and glycerol. Ethanol
exhibits a very interesting polymorphism presenting three different solid
phases at low temperature: a fully-ordered (monoclinic) crystal, an
orientationally-disordered (cubic) crystal or 'orientational glass', and the
ordinary structural glass. By measuring and comparing the low-temperature
specific heat of the three phases, in the 'boson peak' range 2-10 K as well as
in the tunneling-states range below 1K, we are able to provide a quantitative
confirmation that ''glassy behavior'' is not an exclusive property of amorphous
solids. On the other hand, propanol is the simplest monoalcohol with two
different stereoisomers (1- and 2-propanol), what allows us to study directly
the influence of the spatial rearrangement of atoms on the universal properties
of glasses. We have measured the specific heat of both isomers, finding a
noteworthy quantitative difference between them. Finally, low-temperature
specific-heat data of glassy glycerol have also been obtained. Here we propose
a simple method based upon the soft-potential model to analyze low-temperature
specific-heat measurements, and we use this method for a quantitative
comparison of all these data of glassy alcohols and as a stringent test of
several universal correlations and scaling laws suggested in the literature. In
particular, we find that the interstitialcy model for the boson peak [A. V.
Granato, Phys. Rev. Lett. 68 (1992) 974] gives a very good account of the
temperature at which the maximum in Cp/T^3 occurs.Comment: 16 pages, 2 figures, Proceedings of the 4th International Discussion

INCORPORATION OF ACTIVE COMPONENTS IN BIOPOLYMER-BASED FILMS FOR FOOD USE
In the present Doctoral Thesis, different strategies have been used to incorporate non-volatile (polyphenols from thyme extract) and a volatile active compound (eugenol) into biodegradable films prepared with starch (S) of different sources or chitosan (CH) or with mixtures of CH:S. The functional properties and release kinetics of casted films prepared with pea starch or CH or CH:S blends were evaluated as affected by the incorporation of polyphenols from an aqueous thyme extract (TE) and tannic acid (TA), a polyphenol which was used as a cross-linking agent. Moreover, the functional properties and release kinetics of corn starch films, obtained by casting or by thermo-compression moulding, were evaluated as a function of the addition of eugenol (E) in free form or pre-encapsulated with different wall materials. In order to encapsulate E, whey protein isolate (WP) or soy lecithin (LE), as wall material, and maltodextrin (MD), as drying coadjuvant, were selected. Microencapsulate powders were obtained by spray-drying. The effect of the addition of oleic acid (OA), as eugenol carrier, and CH, as a potential capsule stabilizer, was also analysed. The different formulations were characterized before and after drying, in terms of encapsulation efficiency, thermal stability, release kinetics and antioxidant capacity and antimicrobial activity. Results showed that TE provided pea starch and chitosan films with antioxidant activity. Polyphenols (TE and TA) interacted with CH chains and acted as cross-linkers, thus improving the tensile behaviour of films and reducing the release rate and the amount of polyphenol released from the films in water and ethanol aqueous solutions. The opposite effect was observed when TE was incorporated into the pure S matrix. All the films became darker, more reddish and less transparent when TE was incorporated, and this effect was more marked in pure S matrices, which suggests that the TE compounds were poorly encapsulated. Thus, S:TE films showed the fastest delivery rate and the highest delivery ratio of TE. A good encapsulation efficiency (EE) of E was observed in the CH-free powders (87-98%). However, the use of CH provoked a marked EE decrease in both WP and LE powders (22% and 46%, respectively). The formulations exhibited similar E release behaviour in food simulants of different polarity, where practically the total E content was delivered at a similar rate. The antibacterial effect of CH-free powders against E. coli was also coherent with their eugenol content. An additional positive effect of OA was detected in terms of the antilisterial action of this powder. The process of thermo-compression moulding of the films led to important E losses (80-65%), which were minimised when using OA in the microcapsules (EOA-WP or EOA-LE). In the films containing non-encapsulated E, the retention of E was promoted due to the formation of E-starch complexes. The presence of microencapsulated eugenol increased the presence of discontinuities in the polymeric matrix, thus yielding films that were mechanically less resistant and stretchable, except for E-LE-S films, which became more resistant to break. The barrier properties were improved when adding microencapsulates to the films, except for OA-based microcapsules. Eugenol release from the films was affected by microcapsule, their composition and the food simulant. In starch film obtained by casting, the addition of microencapsulated eugenol powder in starch film-forming dispersions modified film microstructure, yielding less resistant and less elastic films with reduced moisture content, transparency and oxygen permeability as compared to casted films formulated with non-encapsulated eugenol. The addition of eugenol microencapsulated with OA promoted the preservation of the antioxidant activity of the films, especially in less polar food simulants. Diversity of floral regulatory genes of japonica rice cultivated at northern latitudes
BACKGROUND: Rice is considered a short day plant. Originally from tropical regions rice has been progressively adapted to temperate climates and long day conditions in part by modulating its sensitivity to day length. Heading date 3a (Hd3a) and RICE FLOWERING LOCUS T 1 (RFT1) that code for florigens, are known as major regulatory genes of floral transition in rice. Both Hd3a and RFT1 are regulated by Early heading date 1 (Ehd1) and Days to heading on chromosome 2 (DTH2) while Heading date 1 (Hd1) also governs Hd3a expression. To investigate the mechanism of rice adaptation to temperate climates we have analyzed the natural variation of these five genes in a collection of japonica rice representing the genetic diversity of long day cultivated rice. RESULTS: We have investigated polymorphisms of Hd3a, RFT1, Ehd1, Hd1 and DTH2 in a collection of 57 japonica varieties. Hd3a and RFT1 were highly conserved, displaying one major allele. Expression analysis suggested that RFT1 rather than Hd3a could be the pivotal gene controlling flowering under long day conditions. While few alleles were found in the Ehd1 promoter and DTH2 coding region, a high degree of variation in Hd1, including non-functional alleles, was observed. Correlation analysis between gene expression levels and flowering periods suggested the occurrence of other factors, additionally to Ehd1, affecting RFT1 regulation in long day adapted cultivars. CONCLUSIONS: During domestication, rice expansion was accompanied by changes in the regulatory mechanism of flowering. The existence of non-functional Hd1 alleles and the lack of correlation of their presence with flowering times in plants grown under long day conditions, indicate a minor role of this branch in this process and the existence of an alternative regulatory pathway in northern latitudes. Expression analysis data and a high degree of conservation of RFT1 suggested that this gene could be the main factor regulating flowering among japonica cultivars adapted to northern areas. In the absence of inhibition exerted by Hd1 through repression of Hd3a expression, the role of Ehd1 as a regulator of RFT1 and Hd3a appears to be reinforced. Data also indicated the occurrence of additional regulatory factors controlling flowering
A study of the last few years of psit in emergency contexts: a literature review

[EN] Edible films were prepared from native wheat starch (WS) and chitosan
(CH) and a wide range of active ingredients were added: essential oils of
basil (B) and thyme (T), citric acid (CA), alpha-tocopherol (TF) (proportion
with regard to starch of 1:0.1 and glycerol as plasticizer). The films were
conditioned to 5ºC-58%RH and 25ºC-53%RH. Mechanical properties were
characterized, water and oxygen permeability, microstructure, gloss and
colour. The antioxidant capacity of both the active ingredients and films was
also determined using a spectrophotometric method. The films were applied
on lard samples to evaluate their antioxidant activity.
The incorporation of several antioxidants had a significant effect on the
mechanical properties of the films. The presence of essential oils increased
water permeability whereas the AC and TF decreased it. All films were an
effective barrier against lipid oxidation. Destabilization phenomena during the
drying step caused irregularities in the structure of the films, especially those which incorporated alpha-tocopherol.[CA] Es van elaborar films comestibles de midó de blat natiu (WS) i quitosano

5¿C-58%HR i 25 ¿C-53%HR. Es van caracteritzar les seues propietats
mecàniques, barrera al vapor d¿aigua i a l¿oxigen, microestructura, brillantor i
color.
Ca Favara urban garden as a space of struggle for recognition: An analysis of the practices and discourses trought critical theory
y aprendizajes transformativos que finalmente, 4) guían a los sujetos hacia su emancipación socialThe following communication summarizes the main ideas taken from the research that led
to my master’s final project. The study focuses on how the everydayness of certain urban
spaces can serve as components of social transformation. Following the theory of the
struggle for the recognition of Axel Honneth and the production of space and the daily life
of Henri Lefebvre, a categorical framework is created to contrast it with the neighborhood
reality of the Ca Favara garden in the Patraix de València neighborhood. Through the
critical analysis of the discourse, it will be observed that: 1) these places are spaces of

[EN] The present work is to enhance the stretch of Islamic wall preserved in the ancient Ángel inn, in the quarter of Carmen in Valencia. For it a tour is done, first of all, by the political situation in the years of muslim occupation to understand its historical essence and the role redeemed by the enclosure walled in a convulsed epoch, especially, for the Christian advances in the reconquest of the peninsula and for the arrival of the Almoravids and Almohads, dynasties of African origin. Also, contains information provided by Muslim and Christian sources on the fortification, as well as its evolution from the 11th century until its modification and enlargement in the next century. The case study approaches a historical, archaeological and constructive approximation, in addition to collecting the results obtained of the analyzed sample. Concretely, a granulometric study is realized to establish the percentage of binder and arid in the lime concrete masonry and the binder is analyzed by MEB/EDX to know its composition and its intrinsic characteristics. Then it develops a diagnosis of conservation status and the factors of deterioration are determined in order to elaborate a proposal of intervention that slows down, as far as possible, the causes of deterioration. With this proposal of character multidisciplinary and based on the maximum respect toward the monument and in the minimal intervention, is intended to protect and to spread the most important vestige of the military Islamic architecture of the city.[ES] El presente trabajo trata de poner en valor el tramo de muralla islámica conservado en la antigua posada del Ángel, en el barrio del Carmen de Valencia.
emulation
technique.
Hardware
in-‐the-‐loop
simulation
is
a
technique
used
in
the
development
and
verification
of
real-‐time
embedded
systems
that
consists
of
designing
and
modeling
digitally
the
power
electronic
circuit
or
plant,
and
implementing
that
model
along
with
the
control
elements
in
a
digital
programmable
device.
In
that
way,
the
need
of
a
physical
prototype
of
the
plant
under
control
can
be
avoided
for
the
testing,
and
with
that,
the
consequent
risk
of
damage
in
the
prototype,
instruments
or
humans.
This
project
presents
a
verification
system
for
the
control
of
a
power
electronics
circuit,
namely,
a
single
phase
full-‐bridge
DC-‐AC
power
inverter,
using
HIL
verification
techniques
The
device
used
as
a
platform
for
the
HIL
system
is
an
FPGA
(Field
Programmable
Gate
Array).
For
implementing
the
plant
model
fixed-‐point
notation
or
QX.Y
signals
are
used.
Besides,
a
high
accuracy
floating
point
model
is
also
presented.
That
system
is
slower
because
it
cannot
be
emulated.
The
two
systems
are
compared
in
this
work
to
prove
the
performance
and
validity
of
the
HIL
system,
analyzing
aspects
such
as
the
design
of
the
plant
model,
the
simulation
and
emulation
speeds,
accuracy,
etc
