Influence of host sex and age on infracommunities of metazoan parasites of Prochilodus lineatus
149 specimens of Prochilodus lineatus were collected on the upper Paraná River floodplain. Of these, 121 (82.1 %) were parasitized. 33 species of metazoan parasites were recorded. Rhinonastes pseudocapsaloideum was classified as secondary, while all other species were classified as satellites. Ergasilus sp. and Tereancistrum curimba were positively associated and their abundances were positively correlated. Saccocoelioides magnorchis and S. nanii were positively associated and their abundances were positively correlated. The mean diversity in the infracommunities of P. lineatus was H = 0.6875 ± 0.4398. Host standard length was not correlated with parasite diversity (rs = 0.1726; p = 0.0533). The abundances of T. curimba and Kritskyia boegeri, and S. magnorchis and S. nanii were significantly correlated with host length. Correlation between fish age and parasite prevalence was not significant. The abundances of Amplexibranchius sp., K. boegeri and S. magnorchis were significantly different among host age classes. For Amplexibranchius sp., the three-year old age class had more parasites. For K. boegeri, the intermediate age classes had the most numerous parasites. Only Tereancistrum curimba showed significant difference in the prevalence between the sexes, with females being more parasitized
Hematological Parameters Of Hoplias Malabaricus (characiformes: Erythrinidae) Parasitized By Monogenea In Lagoons In Pirassununga, Brazil [parâmetros Hematológicos De Hoplias Malabaricus (characiformes: Erythrinidae) Parasitados Por Monogenea Em Lagoas De Pirassununga, Brasil]
Hematology is an important pathological and diagnostic tool. This paper describes the hematological parameters of 76 specimens of Hoplias malabaricus infested with monogenean parasites, which were collected from two lagoons. The hematological parameters included: erythrocyte count (Er), microhematocrit (Hct), hemoglobin (Hb), mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH) and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC). The blood parameters showed no significant changes associated with the infestation. Water temperature was found to be negatively correlated with MCV and Hct, with values of rs= -0.52, p<0.0001 and rs= -0.48, p<0.0001, respectively. The mean Relative Condition Factor was Kn=1.01, indicating good health conditions of the fish in these lagoons. No correlation was found between the monogenean infestation and the blood parameters, or between the environmental factors and the monogeneans.224457462Ballarin, L., Dall'Oro, M., Bertotto, D., Libertini, A., Francescon, A., Barbaro, A., Haematological parameters in Umbrina cirrosa (Teleostei, Sciaenidae): A comparison between diploid and triploid specimens (2004) Comp Biochem Physiol a Mol Integr Physiol, 138 (1), pp. 45-51. , http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.cbpb.2004.02.019, PMid:15165570Bolger, T., Connolly, P.L., The selection of suitable indices for the measurement and analysis of fish condition (1989) J Fish Biol, 34 (2), pp. 171-182. , http://dx.doi.org/10.1111/j.1095-8649.1989.tb03300.xBush, A.O., Lafferty, K.D., Lotz, J.M., Shostak, A.W., Parasitology meets ecology on its own terms (1997) J Parasitol, 83 (4), pp. 575-583. , http://dx.doi.org/10.2307/3284227, PMid:9267395: Margolis et al. revisitedCorrêa, L.L., Karling, L.C., Takemoto, R.M., Ceccarelli, P.S., Ueta, M.T., Hematological alterations caused by high intensity of L3 larvae of Contracaecum sp Railliet &Henry, 1912 (Nematoda, Anisakidae) in the stomach of Hoplias malabaricus in lakes in Pirassununga, São Paulo (2013) Parasitol Res, 112 (8), pp. 2783-2789. , http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s00436-013-3446-8, PMid:23666228Collier, H.B., The standardization of blood haemoglobin determinations (1944) Can Med Assoc J, 50 (6), pp. 550-552. , PMid:20323122 PMCid:PMC1581573Dacie, J.V., Lewis, S.M., (2007) Practical Haematology, , 7th ed. Atorvastatin induces associated reductions in platelet P-selectin, oxidized low-density lipoprotein, and interleukin-6 in patients with coronary artery diseases.
The development and progression of atherosclerosis comprises various processes, such as endothelial dysfunction, chronic inflammation, thrombus formation, and lipid profile modification. Statins are 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase inhibitors that have pleiotropic effects in addition to cholesterol-lowering properties. However, the mechanisms of these effects are not completely understood. Here, we investigated whether atorvastatin affects the levels of malondialdehyde-modified low-density lipoprotein (MDALDL), an oxidized LDL, the proinflammatory cytokine interleukin-6 (IL-6), or platelet P-selectin, a marker of platelet activation, relative to that of LDL cholesterol (LDL-C). Forty-eight patients with coronary artery disease and hyperlipidemia were separated into two groups that were administered with (atorvastatin group) or without (control group) atorvastatin. The baseline MDA-LDL level in all participants significantly correlated with LDL-C (r = 0.71, P < 0.01) and apolipoprotein B levels (r = 0.66, P < 0.01). Atorvastatin (10 mg/day) significantly reduced the LDL-C level within 4 weeks and persisted for a further 8 weeks of administration. Atorvastatin also reduced the MDA-LDL level within 4 weeks and further reduced it over the next 8 weeks. Platelet P-selectin expression did not change until 4 weeks of administration and then significantly decreased at 12 weeks, whereas the IL-6 level was gradually, but not significantly, reduced at 12 weeks. In contrast, none of these parameters significantly changed in the control group within these time frames. The reduction (%) in IL-6 between 4 and 12 weeks after atorvastatin administration significantly correlated with that of MDALDL and of platelet P-selectin (r = 0.65, P < 0.05 and r = 0.70, P < 0.05, respectively). These results suggested that the positive effects of atorvastatin on the LDL-C oxidation, platelet activation and inflammation that are involved in atherosclerotic processes are exerted in concert after lowering LDL-C
Performance of SK-Gd’s upgraded real-time supernova monitoring system
Among multimessenger observations of the next Galactic core-collapse supernova, Super-Kamiokande (SK) plays a critical role in detecting the emitted supernova neutrinos, determining the direction to the supernova (SN), and notifying the astronomical community of these observations in advance of the optical signal. In 2022, SK has increased the gadolinium dissolved in its water target (SK-Gd) and has achieved a Gd concentration of 0.033%, resulting in enhanced neutron detection capability, which in turn enables more accurate determination of the supernova direction. Accordingly, SK-Gd's real-time supernova monitoring system has been upgraded. SK_SN Notice, a warning system that works together with this monitoring system, was released on 2021 December 13, and is available through GCN Notices. When the monitoring system detects an SN-like burst of events, SK_SN Notice will automatically distribute an alarm with the reconstructed direction to the supernova candidate within a few minutes. In this paper, we present a systematic study of SK-Gd's response to a simulated Galactic SN. Assuming a supernova situated at 10 kpc, neutrino fluxes from six supernova models are used to characterize SK-Gd's pointing accuracy using the same tools as the online monitoring system. The pointing accuracy is found to vary from 3° to 7° depending on the models. However, if the supernova is closer than 10 kpc, SK_SN Notice can issue an alarm with three-degree accuracy, which will benefit follow-up observations by optical telescopes with large fields of view
Combined pre-supernova alert system with KamLAND and Super-Kamiokande
Preceding a core-collapse supernova (CCSN), various processes produce an increasing amount of neutrinos of all flavors characterized by mounting energies from the interior of massive stars. Among them, the electron antineutrinos are potentially detectable by terrestrial neutrino experiments such as KamLAND and Super-Kamiokande (SK) via inverse beta decay interactions. Once these pre-supernova (pre-SN) neutrinos are observed, an early warning of the upcoming CCSN can be provided. In light of this, KamLAND and SK, both located in the Kamioka mine in Japan, have been monitoring pre-SN neutrinos since 2015 and 2021, respectively. Recently, we performed a joint study between KamLAND and SK on pre-SN neutrino detection. A pre-SN alert system combining the KamLAND detector and the SK detector was developed and put into operation, which can provide a supernova alert to the astrophysics community. Fully leveraging the complementary properties of these two detectors, the combined alert is expected to resolve a pre-SN neutrino signal from a 15 M⊙ star within 510 pc of the Earth at a significance level corresponding to a false alarm rate of no more than 1 per century. For a Betelgeuse-like model with optimistic parameters, it can provide early warnings up to 12 hr in advance
