Evidence for an in vitro Anticoagulant Activity of Red Onion (Allium cepa L.)
Background: Haemostasis is the process that retains the blood within the vascular system during periods of injury, localizes the reactions involved to the site of injury, repairs and re-establishes blood flow through the injured vessel. Onion (Allium cepa) is a largely universal staple herb popular throughout history as both food and medicine and it has been consumed for prevention of cardiovascular disorders.Objectives: To study the possible anticoagulant effects of red onion in vitro, by using blood samples of normal individuals.Methods: In vitro anticoagulant effects of an aqueous extract (5%) of red onion in different volumes (25, 50 and 75 ìL) were examined on the blood samples of normal individuals by measuring prothrombin time (PT).Results: The aqueous extract of red onion was found to inhibit coagulation process in vitro and significantly prolonged prothrombin time in a dose-dependent manner.Conclusion: This study showed that red onion aqueous extract in different concentrations inhibits clot formation and increases prothrombin time. Red onion can be used as a supplementary anticoagulant agent to improve and/or prevent cardiovascular diseases

Abstract The mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK)
signaling pathway is involved not only in the cellular
response to biotic and abiotic stress but also in the regulation
of cell cycle and plant development. The role of
MAPKs in the formation of a mitotic spindle has been
widely studied and the MAPK signaling pathway was
found to be indispensable for the unperturbed course of cell
division. Here we show cellular localization of activated
MAPKs (dually phosphorylated at their TXY motifs) in
both interphase and mitotic root meristem cells of Lupinus
luteus, Pisum sativum, Vicia faba (Fabaceae) and Lycopersicon esculentum (Solanaceae). Nuclear localization
of activated MAPKs has been found in all species. Colocalization
of these kinases to mitotic microtubules was
most evident in L. esculentum, while only about 50 % of
mitotic cells in the root meristems of P. sativum and V.
faba displayed activated MAPKs localized to microtubules
during mitosis. Unexpectedly, no evident immunofluorescence
signals at spindle microtubules and phragmoplast
were noted in L. luteus. Considering immunocytochemical
analyses and studies on the impact of FR180204 (an
inhibitor of animal ERK1/2) on mitotic cells, we hypothesize
that MAPKs may not play prominent role in the
regulation of microtubule dynamics in all plant species
Lean manufacturing, culture and their role on sustainability: A case study in the Chinese automotive industry
This paper focuses on lean manufacturing and culture and how they influence the sustainability initiatives of an Automotive company in China. The principle of lean manufacturing is widely applied in the automotive industry worldwide. The last few decades have witnessed the accelerating pace of China’s continued emergence as a major industrial power. With the globalisation of multinational corporations and the development of domestic automotive enterprises, there is an increasing number of cross-cultural motor manufacturing companies starting their business in China. In these companies, cultural diversity is an important factor that affects the management strategies. Using a case study approach, this paper shows the relevant themes on the role of lean manufacturing and culture on the sustainability initiatives taken by the company
Outcomes of obstructed abdominal wall hernia: results from the UK national small bowel obstruction audit
Background:
Abdominal wall hernia is a common surgical condition. Patients may present in an emergency with bowel obstruction, incarceration or strangulation. Small bowel obstruction (SBO) is a serious surgical condition associated with significant morbidity. The aim of this study was to describe current management and outcomes of patients with obstructed hernia in the UK as identified in the National Audit of Small Bowel Obstruction (NASBO).
Methods:
NASBO collated data on adults treated for SBO at 131 UK hospitals between January and March 2017. Those with obstruction due to abdominal wall hernia were included in this study. Demographics, co-morbidity, imaging, operative treatment, and in-hospital outcomes were recorded. Modelling for factors associated with mortality and complications was undertaken using Cox proportional hazards and multivariable regression modelling.
Results:
NASBO included 2341 patients, of whom 415 (17·7 per cent) had SBO due to hernia. Surgery was performed in 312 (75·2 per cent) of the 415 patients; small bowel resection was required in 198 (63·5 per cent) of these operations. Non-operative management was reported in 35 (54 per cent) of 65 patients with a parastomal hernia and in 34 (32·1 per cent) of 106 patients with an incisional hernia. The in-hospital mortality rate was 9·4 per cent (39 of 415), and was highest in patients with a groin hernia (11·1 per cent, 17 of 153). Complications were common, including lower respiratory tract infection in 16·3 per cent of patients with a groin hernia. Increased age was associated with an increased risk of death (hazard ratio 1·05, 95 per cent c.i. 1·01 to 1·10; P = 0·009) and complications (odds ratio 1·05, 95 per cent c.i. 1·02 to 1·09; P = 0·001).
Conclusion:
NASBO has highlighted poor outcomes for patients with SBO due to hernia, highlighting the need for quality improvement initiatives in this group

Compared to the higher fungi (Dikarya), taxonomic and evolutionary studies on the basal clades of fungi are fewer in number. Thus, the generic boundaries and higher ranks in the basal clades of fungi are poorly known. Recent DNA based taxonomic studies have provided reliable and accurate information. It is therefore necessary to compile all available information since basal clades genera lack updated checklists or outlines. Recently, Tedersoo et al. (MycoKeys 13:1--20, 2016) accepted Aphelidiomycota and Rozellomycota in Fungal clade. Thus, we regard both these phyla as members in Kingdom Fungi. We accept 16 phyla in basal clades viz. Aphelidiomycota, Basidiobolomycota, Blastocladiomycota, Calcarisporiellomycota, Caulochytriomycota, Chytridiomycota, Entomophthoromycota, Glomeromycota, Kickxellomycota, Monoblepharomycota, Mortierellomycota, Mucoromycota, Neocallimastigomycota, Olpidiomycota, Rozellomycota and Zoopagomycota. Thus, 611 genera in 153 families, 43 orders and 18 classes are provided with details of classification, synonyms, life modes, distribution, recent literature and genomic data. Moreover, Catenariaceae Couch is proposed to be conserved, Cladochytriales Mozl.-Standr. is emended and the family Nephridiophagaceae is introduced
