    Growth, mortality and spawning season of the spangled emperor (Lethrinus nebulosus Forsskal, 1775) in coastal waters of Hormozgan Province in the Persian Gulf and Oman Sea

    The population parameters and spawning season of the Spangled emperor (Lethrinus nebulosus) were studied in coastal waters of Hormozgan province. The monthly calculated mean values of gonadosomatic index (GSI) of females were indicate to increase from February, reach the highest in March and decline in June. The spawning season peak of L. nebulosus occurred in March. The Von Bertalanffy growth parameters, L∞, K and t0 were estimated as, 67.2cm, 0.16.year^-1 and -1.161 year, respectively. The relationship between weight and length (Fork Length) can be expressed as W=0.051 L^2.722, which indicates that Spangled Emperor has negative allometric growth. Using length converted catch curve, total mortality (Z) was estimated as 1.13 year^-1 and natural mortality was estimated using Pauly's equation, as 0.57 per year. Finally, the fishing mortality (F) was 0.56, which gives an exploitation rate (E) of 0.50

    Population dynamics of the Spanish mackerel (Scomberomorus commerson) in coastal waters of Oman Sea

    Length composition data of narrow-barred Spanish mackerel, Scomberomorus commerson (Lacepede 1800), landed between April 2002 to March 2004, were monthly used to estimate the growth, mortality and exploitation parameters of the stock. Maximum fork length and weight were 170 cm and 38 kg, respectively. Nonlinear least square fitting provided a complete set of von Bertalanffy growth estimates: L¥=178 cm (FL); K=0.28 and to= -0.36 years. The estimated value of total mortality based on length converted catch curve using these growth parameters is Z=0.95 year-I. Natural mortality based on growth parameters and mean environmental temperature (T=26.5°C) is M=0.36 year-1. Furthermore, the annual instantaneous fishing mortality rate of 0.59 year-1 was by far in excess of the precautionary target (Fopt=0.18 year-1) and limit (Flimit=0.24 year-1) biological reference points, indicating that the resource is heavily over-exploited and the management of this species should be implanted rapidly if they are to remain sustainable

    Population genetic study on croaker species Atrobucca nibe in Persian Gulf and Oman Sea using molecular methods

    Black Mouth Croaker (Atrobucca nibe) is of significant value from the economics point of view. In the following study, the genetic diversity of Atrobucca nibe has been investigated using the PCR-sequencing method from three different regions of the Persian gulf and Oman Sea, namely Chabahar in the Sistan and Baluchestan and Jask in Hormozgan Province of Iran and Fujairah in the Fujairah Emirate of the United Arab of Emirates. The purpose of the following exploration has essentially beencoined to further the study of Atrobucca nibe genetic diversity and its population structure in the Persian Gulf and Oman Sea. For this purpose, a number of 54 fish have been collected from the aforementioned regions. The DNA of the fish had been extracted through the Ammonium Acetate method and the quality of the DNAs were analyzed via the spectrophotometry and furthermore the quantity of the extracted DNA were assessed viaelectrophoresis. Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) was conducted on the targeted DNAs and thenceforth DNA sequencing was carried out. Subsequently, through sequencing it was discovered that the D-loop region in the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) of Black Mouth Croaker,contained 270 base pairs (bp). For the purpose of analyzing the genetic diversity of Atrobucca nibe and its population structure in the Persian Gulf and Oman Sea, the following softwares have been conducted, namely theBioEdit, Arlequin, Dnasp and Mega5 software. Furthermore, the Kimura 2-parameter was used for the purpose of genetic distance analysis. Through observations of average levels of FST between the regions, it can be summed up that genetic differences do exist among the present populations. On the grounds of the obtained results from the Persian Gulf and Oman Sea, it can be concluded that there currently are three different populations of Atrobucca nibe residing in the waters of Sistan & Baluchestan, Hormozgan and Fujairah

    Molecular genetics study on population of Salmo trutta caspius spring and autumn forms in Southern Caspian Sea using microsatellite marker method basin and establish an alive gene bank

    Caspian brown trout (Salmo trutta caspius) is an important from the point of economy. In this study genetic diversity of (Salmo trutta caspius) was investigated using microsatellite markers from two regions of the Iranian coastline of Southern Caspian Sea (Cheshmeh Kileh River in Mazandaran Province and Karganrud River in Gilan Province). The purpose of this research was the study of Salmo trutta caspius possible populations related to genetic diversity and population structure in the Caspian Sea and introducing the useful genetic markers. For this purpose the number 225 fishes from two Rivers were collected. DNA was extracted and amplified with 16 pairs of microsatellite primers using Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). The amplified products were loaded on polyacrylamide gels and bands were analyzed using Gene Alex and Pop Gene soft wares. Observed and expected heterozygosity averages were 0.46 ± 0.09 and 0.60 ± 0.10, respectively. According to the results from this study, Genetic polymorphism has been seen in this population

    Effects of cognitive load on the amount and temporal structure of postural sway variability in stroke survivors

    This study aimed to investigate the variability in postural sway patterns during quiet standing in stroke survivors. The postural sway was measured in 19 stroke survivors, as well as 19 healthy demographically matched participants, at 3 levels of postural difficulty (rigid surface with closed and open eyes, and foam surface with closed eyes), and 3 levels of cognitive difficulty (without a cognitive task, easy and difficult cognitive tasks). Both linear analyses (the amount of postural sway variability, including the standard deviation of the COP velocity in both the anteroposterior (AP) and mediolateral (ML) directions), as well as non-linear analyses the temporal structure of the COP variability, including % Recurrence, % Determinism, Shannon Entropy, Trend and the maximum diagonal line (Dmax) were employed. The results revealed that the amount of variability of the postural sway of stroke survivors was significantly greater than that of healthy participants, along both the ML and AP directions, with the highest obtained during standing on foam with closed eyes. All measures of the temporal structure of the COP variability were significantly greater in stroke survivors, as compared to the control group, along the ML direction, but not along the AP direction. The cognitive error was significantly higher during difficult cognitive tasks, although it was neither affected by postural difficulty nor by group. The different results obtained for the amount and temporal structure of the COP variability in the AP and ML directions shed light on the intricate mechanisms employed by the CNS in post-stroke balance control, and suggest that effective rehabilitative and therapeutic strategies should be patient-specific, taking both the environment/surface as well as the specific protocols into consideration. © 2017, Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature

    Application of novel pressure-sensitive paint formulations for the surface flow mapping of high-speed jets

    The principle of pressure-sensitive paints (PSPs) is based upon excitation of the luminophore molecules at a certain wavelength and the emission of this absorbed energy at a higher wavelength. By isolating these two wavelengths we insure that the results obtained are not affected by any background radiation. Various international research groups, such as: the Central Aero-Hydrodynamic Institute (Russia), the University of Washington, NASA Ames, Boeing and McDonnell Douglas (USA), have developed their PSP formulations and some are commercially available. Two paints, which have been developed in-house at the Aero-Physics Laboratory (APL) at the University of Manchester, are studied here. One formulation uses hydrochloric acid (PSP1-HCl) and the other acetone as the solvent (PSP2-Ace). The current study employs the well known schlieren photography technique together with the relatively new PSP method, with comparison to discrete measurements, to examine the flow through a two-dimensional air-ejector system and examines the efficacy of the PSP formulations in providing an accurate global pressure field of the aforementioned setup. Detailed analysis of the errors and drawbacks involved in PSP measurements along with possible solutions to overcome them are also presented.
