    Quantum Conductance Probing of Oxygen Vacancies in SrTiO3 Epitaxial Thin Film Using Graphene

    The quantum Hall conductance in monolayer graphene on an epitaxial SrTiO3 (STO) thin film is studied to understand the role of oxygen vacancies in determining the dielectric properties of STO. As the gate voltage sweep range is gradually increased in our device, we observe systematic generation and annihilation of oxygen vacancies evidenced from the hysteretic conductance behavior in graphene. Furthermore, based on the experimentally observed linear scaling relation between the effective capacitance and the voltage sweep range, a simple model is constructed to manifest the relationship among the dielectric properties of STO with oxygen vacancies. The inherent quantum Hall conductance in graphene can be considered as a sensitive, robust, and non-invasive probe for understanding the electronic and ionic phenomena in complex transition metal oxides without impairing the oxide layer underneath.Comment: 21 pages, 4 figures, 2 supp. figure

    Improving thermal conductivity and fluid loss properties of grouting materials: New mixed grout granules of bentonites and sands

    We propose new granule type grouting materials with optimized ratio of bentonites and sands for use in the ground source heat pump systems. The grouting materials could be prepared in various size of 1.18 to 4.75 mm. The granules consist of bentonite powders and sand particles inside and extra bentonite powders exists on the surface of granules. In different ratio (1:0-1:8) of bentonites and sands, the granules with 1:8 ratio show the best thermal conductivity (ca., 1.8 W/mK). In comparison to the existing powder type mixed grouting materials, the present granules show the lower values of fluid loss and the minimum values at 1:5 ratio of bentonites and sands. This might be due to the fact that the bentonites on the surface of granules strongly hold water, resulting in decrease of penetration of water into granules. We also investigated the effect of bentonites between the granules on fluid loss property by addition of them as slurry form. When only water is added, water channels were formed. When the slurry of bentonite and water is added, water channels were decreased, resulting from that the additional bentonites interacted with granules.     FEASIBILITY OF BREWING MAKGEOLLI (TURBID RICE WINE) USING PARTIALLY GELATINIZED WHEAT FLOUR AND TAPIOCA FLOUR

    Makgeolli is made from cooked rice or wheat, then brewed with nuruk (Korean fermentation starter) for several days. But, nowadays, attempts have been made to use various raw materials and process innovations to make makgeolli for particular purposes.  This study aimed to evaluate the quality of makgeolly made from partially gelatinized wheat flour and tapioca flour. Five different combination of wheat flour and tapioca flour were used to manufacture makgeolli. The results showed that different combination of partially gelatinized wheat flour and tapioca flour significantly affected the chemical and sensorial characteristics of makgeolli. Increasing proportion of wheat flour produced higher level of total acid, amino acidity, reducing sugar and total solid of makgeolli. Inversely, alcohol content was higher when higher level of tapioca flour was used. In general, sensorial characteristics of makgeolli made from partially gelatinized wheat flour and tapioca flour didn’t acceptable by panelists. Thus, brewing makgeolli by using partially gelatinized wheat flour and tapioca flour isn’t acceptable in term of sensorial characteristics

    Nanoscale reaction vessels: Highly ordered nanocrystal arrays inside porous anodic alumina nanowells

    Using an anodic alumina template as a nanoscale reaction vessel, the authors developed a simple and unique method to prepare highly ordered arrays of nanocrystals in isolated nanowells. The highly ordered arrays of nanoscale wells were fabricated by short anodization. After the nanoscale wells were filled with a precursor solution of NaCl by dewetting, the solvent of the precursor solution was evaporated, resulting in spontaneous formation of uniformly sized NaCl nanocrystals inside the nanoscale wells. The size of crystals could be easily adjusted by varying the concentration of the precursor solution and the size of nanoscale wells. This approach is simple and cost-effective, and it can fabricate nanocrystal arrays on substrates with high throughput. It can also be readily adapted to synthesize other types of high-density nanocrystal arrays on different substrates. © 2015 The Authorsopen0

    We present DeeLeMa, a deep learning network to analyze energies and momenta in particle collisions at high energy colliders, especially DeeLeMa is constructed based on symmetric event topology, and the generated mass distributions show robust peaks at the physical masses after the combinatoric uncertainties, and detector smearing effects are taken into account. DeeLeMa can be widely used in different event topologies by adopting the corresponding kinematic symmetries

    Association Between Obstructive Sleep Apnea and Risk of Benign Vocal Fold Lesions: A Nationwide 9-Year Follow-Up Cohort Study

    Since obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) affects various parts of the body, there has been little interest about the effect of OSA on voice. The objective of this study was to evaluate the risk of benign vocal fold lesions (BVFL) in OSA patients. This study used data from the National Health Insurance Service (NHIS) database. The study group was defined as the group diagnosed with OSA between 2008 and 2011. Non-OSA groups were selected based on propensity score (PS) matching. Incidence of BVFL among participants during the follow-up was analyzed. Cox proportional hazard regression analyses were performed to evaluate the association between OSA and incident BVFL. The HR value of the OSA group calculated by considering 8 variables indicates that the risk of developing BVFL is 79% higher than that of the control group. Further, among OSA patients, patients with a history of OP had a 35% lower risk of developing BVFL. The relationships between BVFL and 7 individual variables considered were as follows: For age, HR for the 40 to 59 years group was 1.20 (95%CI, 1.09-1.32). For sex, the HR in the female group was 1.22 (95%CI, 1.10-1.35). For residential areas, the HR values for Seoul 1.39 (95%CI, 1.23-1.59). In the high economic status group, the HR was 1.10 (95%CI, 1.01-1.21). This observational study indicated that OSA is associated with an increased incidence of BVFL.
