Evanescently coupled topological ring-waveguide systems for chip-scale ultrahigh frequency phononic circuits

Topological phononics enabling backscattering-immune transport is expected to improve the performance of electromechanical systems for classical and quantum information technologies. Nonetheless, most of the previous demonstrations utilized macroscale and low-frequency structures and thus offered little experimental insight into ultrahigh frequency phonon transport, especially in chip-scale circuits. Here, we report microwave phonon transmissions in a microscopic topological ring-waveguide coupled system, which is an important building block for wave-based signal processing. The elastic waves in the topological waveguide evanescently couple to the ring resonator, while maintaining the valley pseudospin polarization. The resultant waves are robust to backscattering even in the tiny hexagonal ring, generating a resonant phonon circulation. Furthermore, the evanescently coupled structure allows for a critical coupling, where valley-dependent ring-waveguide interference enables blocking of the topological edge transmission. Our demonstrations reveal the capability of using topological phenomena to manipulate ultrahigh frequency elastic waves in intricate phononic circuits for classical and quantum signal-processing applications.Comment: 13 pages, 9 figure

A chemo-mechanical modeling of Alkali Silica Reaction (ASR) was proposed in the view ofmesoscale and introduced to finite element analysis. Chemical reaction between alkali components and alkaline reactive minerals in aggregate, producing of a hygroscopic gel and swelling of the gel were simply modeled. Moreover, transportation of both alkali ions and moisture content in concrete was alsoevaluated by considering the nonstationary diffusion equations in the analysis. Parametric analyses with single aggregate model were conducted in order to confirm the applicability of the proposed model. Asthe results, it was shown that the proposed model was useful to evaluate ASR expansive behavior, since effects of alkali content and humidity on ASR were simulated qualitatively.平成26年度関西大学若手研究者育成経費 研究課題「準微視的メカニズムに基づいたコンクリートのASRシミュレーション

QUALITY ESTIMATION OF THE STONEWORK BLOCKS IN BARBAR TEMPLE AND AL-KHAMIS MOSQUE, BAHRAIN

We report on our assessment of the present quality of the stonework blocks in two historic structures in Bahrain: the ancient Barbar Temple and the early medieval Al-Khamis Mosque. The Barbar Temple, located in the village of Barbar, was built around 2000 BCE. Al-Khamis Mosque was built around the 8th century CE. We measured the quality and condition of the stonework blocks in both structures. Our results show that the quality in both structures is fairly good and demonstrate that our quality testing methods are effective for evaluating the quality of ancient and medieval stonework blocks

STRENGTHENING COUNTERMEASURES AND QUALITY ESTIMATION OF BEDROCKS IN MASTABA IDOUT, EGYPT

As part of the conservation and restoration work of the Center for the Global Study of Cultural Heritage and Culture (CHC), this study explores the strengthening countermeasures and the quality estimation of rock at Mastaba Idout in Saqqara, Egypt. The Mastaba Idout was built around 2360BC. The bedrock of this unique underground burial chamber is known to be weak and, as such, an investigation of its condition and quality and an examination of various strengthening methods are reported herein. The results of quality testing for four kinds of strengthening agents for stone in Japan are also examined. The results of quality testing and repairs for the bedrock in Egypt and the results of the quality testing of strengthening agents for dirt in Japan are reported. Quality testing measures the frequency of the accelerating wave generated by striking a rock surface with an impact hammer. The repair methods involve strengthening by coating with a strengthening agent for stone and injecting non-shrink cement slurry into cracks. This research identified that the site\u27s bedrock was of very low quality and that the strengthening methods were effective. Quality testing of the strengthening agents for dirt found that agent OH100 had good water permeability, good moisture permeability, and minimal negative effects on the compressive strength of rocks

Current status of tertiary debulking surgery and prognosis after secondary debulking surgery for recurrent Müllerian epithelial cancer in Japan: a retrospective analysis of 164 patients (KCOG-G1402)

BackgroundThis study aimed to evaluate the current status of secondary debulking surgery (SDS) and tertiary debulking surgery (TDS; performed for recurrence after SDS) and to assess the overall survival after recurrence of Müllerian epithelial cancer in Japan. We also evaluated the data of patients who underwent a fourth debulking surgery (i.e., quaternary debulking surgery (QDS)).MethodsWe conducted a retrospective study of 164 patients with recurrent Müllerian epithelial cancers (i.e., ovarian, tubal, and peritoneal cancers). The SDS was performed between January 2000 and September 2014 in 20 Japanese hospitals. Clinicopathological data were collected and analyzed.ResultsOf the 164 patients, 66 patients did not have a recurrence or died after SDS. Ninety-eight patients had a recurrence after SDS. Forty-three of the 98 patients underwent TDS; 55 of the 98 patients did not undergo TDS and were classified into the non-TDS group. The overall survival (OS) after SDS was significantly better in the TDS group than in the non-TDS group. The median OS after SDS was 123 and 42 months in the TDS group and non-TDS group, respectively. Of the 43 patients who received TDS, 11 patients were further treated with QDS. The median OS after SDS was 123 months for patients who underwent QDS.ConclusionsThis multicenter study on the prognosis of post-SDS is apparently the first report on QDS in Japan. Patients undergoing TDS have a good prognosis, compared to patients in the non-TDS group. Novel drugs are being evaluated; however, debulking surgery remains a necessary treatment for recurrence

Ketone bodies : A double-edged sword for mammalian life span.

Accumulating evidence suggests health benefits of ketone bodies, and especially for longevity. However, the precise role of endogenous ketogenesis in mammalian life span, and the safety and efficacy of the long-term exogenous supplementation of ketone bodies remain unclear. In the present study, we show that a deficiency in endogenous ketogenesis, induced by whole-body Hmgcs2 deletion, shortens life span in mice, and that this is prevented by daily ketone body supplementation using a diet containing 1,3-butanediol, a precursor of β-hydroxybutyrate. Furthermore, feeding the 1,3-butanediol-containing diet from early in life increases midlife mortality in normal mice, but in aged mice it extends life span and prevents the high mortality associated with atherosclerosis in ApoE-deficient mice. By contrast, an ad libitum low-carbohydrate ketogenic diet markedly increases mortality. In conclusion, endogenous ketogenesis affects mammalian survival, and ketone body supplementation may represent a double-edged sword with respect to survival, depending on the method of administration and health status
