    Arabic Language Learning (ALL) for Kids

    Arabic Language has an exceptional position in Islam. It is the language of Quran, thus the need to learn and understand Arabic amongst Muslims is of paramount importance. For countries where their native language is not Arabic, the language is only taught in special schools. Arabic language needs to be introduced to children at early ages such as in the kindergarten. With the advent of computer technology, various kind of multimedia tools have been developed for the purpose of language learning. Since children are attracted to computer applications especially those that involve multimedia,there is a need to develop Arabic language learning applications for them. Even though there are few applications available in the market for that purpose, most of them do not fully utilize the multimedia elements. The prime objective of this study was to propose an Arabic Language Learning (ALL) for kids of ages between 4 to 6 years old that enable them to learn the language. In the process, an interactive field-tested ALL for kids has been developed as an alternative to the traditional learning tools. The results of user evaluation on the ALL indicate that it has good usability in terms of Learnability,Usefulness, Ease of Use and Outcome/Future Use. The results also indicate that there is a significant difference between novice and expert users for Usefulness and Ease of Use,while no significant difference for learnability and Outcome/Future Use

    Huge desmoid tumor of the anterior abdominal wall mimicking an intraabdominal mass in a postpartum woman: a case report

    Desmoid tumors are benign neoplasms that most often arise from muscle aponeurosis and have been associated with both trauma and pregnancy. The etiology of desmoids has not been determined. We report the case of anterior abdominal wall desmoid tumor in a female patient with previous history of cesarean section. Preoperative ultrasound and computed tomography demonstrated a large mass mimicking a large hematoma or an intraabdominal mass. The tumor was removed by wide excision with safe margins. The abdominal wall defect was reconstructed with polypropylene mesh. Subsequent histology revealed a desmoid tumor. Desmoid tumors in females are often associated with pregnancy or occur post-partum. The reasons behind this association are unclear. The most common sites are in the abdominal muscles.Pan African Medical Journal 2013; 14:5

    Brain-computer interface (BCI) systems translate the human neurophysiological activities into commands through EEG analysis. Improving the BCI performances leads to faster and easier use and less fatigue. In this study, we proposed a new prepossessing approach to increase the robustness of a steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP) based BCI. Inspiring from the known properties of the SSVEP frequency components, the goal was to enhance the signal quality by making it more convenient to be interpreted by the decision-making step. We first investigated the potential to detect the deteriorating periods based on the physiological properties of the SSVEP. The proposed system localizes the intervals which can obscure the SSVEP frequencies by a new algorithm founded on the processing and the analysis of the instantaneous phase. The piecewise linear regression allows a sampler comprehension of the phase signal. Then, these intervals are filtered by the moving average filter to enhance the SSVEP quality. Finally, the decision making is made by the canonical correlation analysis (CCA) algorithm. The results of experiments, using real EEG signals from five subjects, show that the proposed approach significantly increases the performances in terms of accuracy and information transfer rate by about 7.3% and 3.85 bits/min, respectively, in case of 2 s segment length.     Identification of phenolic compounds by HPLC/MS and in vitro evaluation of the antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of Ceratonia siliqua leaves extracts

    Ceratonia siliqua is a typical plant of the Mediterranean area, which is mainly used as animal and human food and in folk medicine for treating some diseases such as antidiarrheal and diuretic. The present study was planned to evaluate the potential of antimicrobial and antioxidant activities of C. siliqua leaves extract and the identification of bioactive compounds by high performance liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (HPLC/MS) in the active extract. The antioxidant activities of the different organic extracts of C. siliqua were assayed by 2,2-diphenyl-l-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and β-carotene tests. Among the tested extracts, results showed that the ethyl acetate extract displayed the greatest DPPH scavenging ability with an IC50 of 1.8 µg/ml and a strong β-carotene bleaching inhibition after 120 min of incubation with an IC50 of 24.01 µg/ml. The investigation of the phenolic and flavonids content showed that the ethyl acetate extract of C. siliqua revealed the highest phenolic contents. Only the ethyl acetate extract of C. siliqua (EACs) showed antimicrobial activity with a broad-spectrum microbiocide with diameter inhibition zones ranging from 12 to 24 mm and MIC values of 0.312 to 1.25 mg/ml. The HPLC finger print of EACs active extract showed the presence of six phenolic compounds. They included (1) 1,6-Di-galloyl-glucose, (2) 1,2,6-Tri-galloyl-glucose, (3) Myricetin glucoside, (4) 1,2,3,6-Tetra-galloyl-glucose, (5) Myricetin rhamnoside and (6) Syringic acid. These results are a good agreement of the popular use and experimentally observed effects of C. siliqua and would promote the reasonable usage and exploitation of the biomolecules of this important plant

    Chemical composition and evaluation of antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of Tunisian Thymelaea hirsuta with special reference to its mode of action

    In the present study, we evaluated in vitro antimicrobial and antioxidant properties of Thymelaea hirsuta extracts as well as its phytochemical composition. Total phenolic and flavonoid contents were highest in acetone and ethyl acetate extracts respectively. The different extracts were tested against a panel of microorganisms, food-borne bacteria and spoilage fungi, in order to evaluate the antimicrobial properties of this plant. Among the tested extracts, only the ethyl acetate one exhibited antibacterial and antifungal activities. Acetone extract showed only an antibacterial activity. The investigation of the mode of action of the active ethyl acetate extract by the time-kill curve showed a drastic bactericidal effect after 5 min using a concentration of 624 μg/ml. Also, it appears that the ethyl acetate extract is an antifungal agent with a cellular target includes the pump H+-ATPase. The antioxidant activities of the different extract were evaluated using DPPH, lipid peroxidation and hydroxyl radical scavenging methods. From the obtained results it can be noticed that ethyl acetate and acetone extracts exhibited the best performance. The major phenolic compounds of the ethyl acetate extract of T. hirsuta were identified by Gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS).     A 23-year-old boy was referred to Urology because of a nail self insertion on the scrotum. Examination revealed a visible big nail within the scrotum, lateralized to the right at 1 cm from the median raphe. Scrotal exploration and debridement of non-viable tissue was performed, and no testicular or surrounding structure injury was found. Referred to a psychiatrist the diagnosis of schizophrenia was retained in our patient in front of several arguments including the self-mutilation and his psychiatrist concluded that this was secondary to delusions
