Novel mid-infrared dispersive wave generation in gas-filled PCF by transient ionization-driven changes in dispersion
Gas-filled hollow-core photonic crystal fibre (PCF) is being used to generate
ever wider supercontinuum spectra, in particular via dispersive wave (DW)
emission in the deep and vacuum ultraviolet, with a multitude of applications.
DWs are the result of the resonant transfer of energy from a self-compressed
soliton, a process which relies crucially on phase matching. It was recently
predicted that, in the strong-field regime, the additional transient anomalous
dispersion introduced by gas ionization would allow phase-matched DW generation
in the mid-infrared (MIR)-something that is forbidden in the absence of free
electrons. Here we report for the first time the experimental observation of
such MIR DWs, embedded in a 4.7-octave-wide supercontinuum that uniquely
reaches simultaneously to the vacuum ultraviolet, with up to 1.7 W of total
average power
Scale-free networks with tunable degree distribution exponents
We propose and study a model of scale-free growing networks that gives a
degree distribution dominated by a power-law behavior with a model-dependent,
hence tunable, exponent. The model represents a hybrid of the growing networks
based on popularity-driven and fitness-driven preferential attachments. As the
network grows, a newly added node establishes new links to existing nodes
with a probability based on popularity of the existing nodes and a
probability based on fitness of the existing nodes. An explicit form of
the degree distribution is derived within a mean field approach. For
reasonably large , , where the
function is dominated by the behavior of for small
values of and becomes -independent as , and is a
model-dependent exponent. The degree distribution and the exponent
are found to be in good agreement with results obtained by extensive numerical

Memory, learning and language in autism spectrum disorder
Background and aims: The âdual-systemsâ model of language acquisition has been used by Ullman and colleagues to explain patterns of strength and weakness in the language of higher-functioning people with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Specifically, intact declarative/explicit learning is argued to compensate for a deficit in non-declarative/implicit procedural learning, constituting an example of the so-called âsee-sawâ effect. Ullman and Pullman (2015) extended their argument concerning a see-saw effect on language in ASD to cover other perceived anomalies of behaviour, including impaired acquisition of social skills. The aim of this paper is to present a critique of Ullman and colleaguesâ claims, and to propose an alternative model of links between memory systems and language in ASD.
Main contribution: We argue that a 4-systems model of learning, in which intact semantic and procedural memory are used to compensate for weaknesses in episodic memory and perceptual learning, can better explain patterns of language ability across the autistic spectrum. We also argue that attempts to generalise the âimpaired implicit learning/spared declarative learningâ theory to other behaviours in ASD are unsustainable.
Conclusions: Clinically significant language impairments in ASD are under-researched, despite their impact on everyday functioning and quality of life. The relative paucity of research findings in this area lays it open to speculative interpretation which may be misleading.
Implications: More research is need into links between memory/learning systems and language impairments across the spectrum. Improved understanding should inform therapeutic intervention, and contribute to investigation of the causes of language impairment in ASD with potential implications for prevention
The Dynamics of Viral Marketing
We present an analysis of a person-to-person recommendation network,
consisting of 4 million people who made 16 million recommendations on half a
million products. We observe the propagation of recommendations and the cascade
sizes, which we explain by a simple stochastic model. We analyze how user
behavior varies within user communities defined by a recommendation network.
Product purchases follow a 'long tail' where a significant share of purchases
belongs to rarely sold items. We establish how the recommendation network grows
over time and how effective it is from the viewpoint of the sender and receiver
of the recommendations. While on average recommendations are not very effective
at inducing purchases and do not spread very far, we present a model that
successfully identifies communities, product and pricing categories for which
viral marketing seems to be very effective
Force Distribution in a Granular Medium
We report on systematic measurements of the distribution of normal forces
exerted by granular material under uniaxial compression onto the interior
surfaces of a confining vessel. Our experiments on three-dimensional, random
packings of monodisperse glass beads show that this distribution is nearly
uniform for forces below the mean force and decays exponentially for forces
greater than the mean. The shape of the distribution and the value of the
exponential decay constant are unaffected by changes in the system preparation
history or in the boundary conditions. An empirical functional form for the
distribution is proposed that provides an excellent fit over the whole force

An immunohistological study of testicular germ cell tumours using two different monoclonal antibodies against placental alkaline phosphatase.
Using two monoclonal antibodies directed against placental alkaline phosphatase (H17E2 and D20L) the immunohistological staining of testicular germ cell tumours was compared with that of a wide range of normal and malignant tissues. All seminomas and malignant teratomas tested gave strong positive labelling with H17E2 but were either negative or only patchily positive with D20L. Neither antibody gave any positive reaction on the normal tissues tested. All other malignancies were negative with both antibodies apart from two cases of ovarian and one case of endometrical cancer (strongly stained by H17E2) and three cases of colonic carcinoma (weakly and patchily stained by both H17E2 and D20L). This indicates that germ cell neoplasms generally express a form of placental alkaline phosphatase recognised by antibody H17E2
On the making and taking of professionalism in the further education workplace
This paper examines the changing nature of professional practice in English further education. At a time when neo-liberal reform has significantly impacted on this under-researched and over-market-tested sector, little is known about who its practitioners are and how they construct meaning in their work. Sociological interest in the field has tended to focus on further education practitioners as either the subjects of market and managerial reform or as creative agents operating within the contradictions of audit and inspection cultures. In challenging such dualism, which is reflective of wider sociological thinking, the paper examines the ways in which agency and structure combine to produce a more transformative conception of the further education professional. The approach contrasts with a prevailing policy discourse that seeks to re-professionalise and modernise further education practice without interrogating either the terms of its professionalism or the neo-liberal practices in which it resides
Properties of layer-by-layer vector stochastic models of force fluctuations in granular materials
We attempt to describe the stress distributions of granular packings using
lattice-based layer-by-layer stochastic models that satisfy the constraints of
force and torque balance and non-tensile forces at each site. The inherent
asymmetry in the layer-by-layer approach appears to lead to an asymmetric force
distribution, in disagreement with both experiments and general symmetry
considerations. The vertical force component probability distribution is robust
and in agreement with predictions of the scalar q model while the distribution
of horizontal force components is qualitatively different and depends on the

Stress transmission in granular matter
The transmission of forces through a disordered granular system is studied by
means of a geometrical-topological approach that reduces the granular packing
into a set of layers. This layered structure constitutes the skeleton through
which the force chains set up. Given the granular packing, and the region where
the force is applied, such a skeleton is uniquely defined. Within this
framework, we write an equation for the transmission of the vertical forces
that can be solved recursively layer by layer. We find that a special class of
analytical solutions for this equation are L\'evi-stable distributions. We
discuss the link between criticality and fragility and we show how the
disordered packing naturally induces the formation of force-chains and arches.
We point out that critical regimes, with power law distributions, are
associated with the roughness of the topological layers. Whereas, fragility is
associated with local changes in the force network induced by local granular
rearrangements or by changes in the applied force. The results are compared
with recent experimental observations in particulate matter and with computer
