Review of a Small-scale Pelagic Longline Fishery off Northeastern Brazil
The annual catches of four small longliners operating off northeast Brazil from 1983 to 1997 were examined across different areas and locations. The total catch comprised tunas (30%), sharks (54%), billfishes (12%), and other fish species (4%). Fishing strategy and annual composition of catches showed large spatial and temporal variabilities with the dominant catches alternating among yellowfin tuna,
Thunnus albacares; gray sharks, Carcharhinus spp.; and blue shark, Prionace glauca. Catches of blue and gray sharks
showed a significant interaction among seamounts, with gray sharks occurring in maximum abundance around those seamounts
that had relatively deep summits and low-sloping depth profiles. Results are discussed in terms of the various factors that may have influenced distribution of effort
Penetration of hydrogen technologies: study on the environmental impact of road transport in Portugal
Road traffic is one of the transportation sectors with faster growth and also one of the most important emitters of greenhouse gases (GHGs). In this work, an analysis of the environmental benefits resulting from the introduction of hydrogen on road transport in Portugal is made. Impact is analyzed mainly looking at the pollutant emissions provided by road transport at the point of use. Emissions associated to road transport have been estimated using the software COPERT (version 4), since it provides a detailed methodology for each specific pollutant related to the vehicle fleet of a region or country, as well as the driving conditions and fuel consumption. Passenger cars, light duty vehicles and public transport buses are the vehicles categories in which the hydrogen technology is foreseen. The hydrogen penetration rates (moderate and high) are extracted from the European Project HYWAYS. Two trends are then considered, which give penetration rates of 40.0 % and 74.5 % in 2050 for the moderate and high scenarios respectively
Mortality due to systemic mycoses as a primary cause of death or in association with AIDS in Brazil: a review from 1996 to 2006
Deaths caused by systemic mycoses such as paracoccidioidomycosis, cryptococcosis, histoplasmosis, candidiasis, aspergillosis, coccidioidomycosis and zygomycosis amounted to 3,583 between 1996-2006 in Brazil. When analysed as the underlying cause of death, paracoccidioidomycosis represented the most important cause of deaths among systemic mycoses (~ 51.2%). When considering AIDS as the underlying cause of death and the systemic mycoses as associated conditions, cryptococcosis (50.9%) appeared at the top of the list, followed by candidiasis (30.2%), histoplasmosis (10.1%) and others. This mortality analysis is useful in understanding the real situation of systemic mycoses in Brazil, since there is no mandatory notification of patients diagnosed with systemic mycoses in the official health system.FAPESPCNP
Numerical relations and skill level constrain co-adaptive behaviors of agents in sports teams
Similar to other complex systems in nature (e.g., a hunting pack, flocks of birds), sports teams have been modeled as social neurobiological systems in which interpersonal coordination tendencies of agents underpin team swarming behaviors. Swarming is seen as the result of agent co-adaptation to ecological constraints of performance environments by collectively perceiving specific possibilities for action (affordances for self and shared affordances). A major principle of invasion team sports assumed to promote effective performance is to outnumber the opposition (creation of numerical overloads) during different performance phases (attack and defense) in spatial regions adjacent to the ball. Such performance principles are assimilated by system agents through manipulation of numerical relations between teams during training in order to create artificially asymmetrical performance contexts to simulate overloaded and underloaded situations. Here we evaluated effects of different numerical relations differentiated by agent skill level, examining emergent inter-individual, intra- and inter-team coordination. Groups of association football players (national - NLP and regional-level - RLP) participated in small-sided and conditioned games in which numerical relations between system agents were manipulated (5v5, 5v4 and 5v3). Typical grouping tendencies in sports teams (major ranges, stretch indices, distances of team centers to goals and distances between the teams' opposing line-forces in specific team sectors) were recorded by plotting positional coordinates of individual agents through continuous GPS tracking. Results showed that creation of numerical asymmetries during training constrained agents' individual dominant regions, the underloaded teams' compactness and each team's relative position on-field, as well as distances between specific team sectors. We also observed how skill level impacted individual and team coordination tendencies. Data revealed emergence of co-adaptive behaviors between interacting neurobiological social system agents in the context of sport performance. Such observations have broader implications for training design involving manipulations of numerical relations between interacting members of social collectives
Preliminary Results of Circle and J-Style Hook Comparisons in the Brazilian Pelagic Longline Fishery
Preliminary studies in western North Atlantic pelagic longline fisheries indicate that a change in terminal gear from J-style hooks to circle hooks may reduce bycatch mortality. However, such studies have not examined the impact of this change in the equatorial fishery. Catch composition, catch rates, hooking location, and condition at haulback were monitored during 26 sets in the commercial longline fishery operating in the western equatorial South Atlantic where circle (size 18/0, non-offset) and J-style (size 9/0 and 10/0, 10° offset) hooks were deployed in an alternating fashion. Catch rates for yellowfin tuna, swordfish, and a composite “all fishes” category were significantly (P \u3c 0.05) higher for circle hooks. Bigeye tuna, swordfish, sailfish, and yellowfin tuna were hooked significantly more often externally than internally. Yellowfin tuna were over eight times more likely to be hooked in the mouth with circle hooks than with J-style hooks. Bigeye tuna and sailfish showed significantly higher rates of survival at haulback with circle hooks. The results suggest that the use of size 18/0 non-offset circle hooks in the equatorial pelagic longline fishery may increase the survival of bycatch species at haulback with minimal detrimental effects on the catches of target species
Diagnóstico regionalizado de sistemas de produção de milho como subsídio para gestão territorial.
Diversidade na produção de milho na região central de Minas Gerais.
O trabalho pretende contribuir para o necessário processo reflexivo sobre a complexidade do sistema de produção de milho na região central de Minas Gerais, para que sejam levadas em conta suas potencialidades em atender as demandas do produtor e do mercado com o devido cuidado para com as fragilidades locais. Os sistemas de produção de milho na região central de MG (cultivado em praticamente todas as pequenas propriedades rurais) foram objeto de pesquisa de campo em 2010. Características inerentes ao território e à comunidade da região foram consideradas quando da análise das informações oriundas desses sistemas de produção de milho. Em 48 propriedades de 19 municípios da regional da EMATER-MG de Sete Lagoas, foram avaliadas 16 lavouras de milho-silagem e 33 lavouras de milho-grão. Estes produtores foram visitados (entre março e maio de 2010) por uma comissão de técnicos da Emater e da Embrapa Milho e Sorgo, quando foi aplicado um questionário padrão. Foram obtidos dados de produção da lavoura selecionada, das técnicas utilizadas, dos tipos e quantidades de insumos e serviços, da infraestrutura de produção e armazenamento e a percepção ambiental dos produtores. Seguindo a tendência mundial da migração do campo para a cidade, a falta de mão de obra rural na região, citada com frequência pelos entrevistados, surge como problema de considerável relevância: cerca de 70% da população da região é urbana. A área média de produção demilho foi de 3,7 ha, enquanto a de milho-silagem foi de 6,1 ha. Com o predomínio de pequenas propriedades, a produção é, em sua maioria, voltada para consumo próprio (72% plantaram o milho com essa finalidade). A maior área encontrada com produção de milho-grão foi de 36 ha, e para silagem, 60 ha. A lavoura de subsistência e a lavoura comercial são identificadas no atual estudo como sendo “sem integração”, representando 77% das lavouras pesquisadas. Acrescentam-se, a partir das visitas realizadas em 2010, sistemas caracterizados com tipos específicos de consórcio, ainda em proporções incipientes: a integração-lavoura-pecuária (ILP) e a integração-lavoura-pecuária-floresta (ILPF). Afora os adubos sintéticos, herbicida é o insumo com potencial de gerar poluição ambiental mais frequentemente utilizado na região. Em 2005, um levantamento semelhante apontava uma produtividade de 5.655,2 kg/ha em 10 lavouras de milho-grão na região, enquanto em 2010, tal parâmetro atingiu a marca de 7.704,5 kg/ha em média. Dez produtores fizeram uso de inseticida sintético (20,8%), enquanto 09 dos 48 produtores detectaram a presença de inimigos naturais nas lavouras de milho. O aporte tecnológico na atualidade deve-se, em parte, ao esforço de instituições presentes na região, como o Escritório Regional de Sete Lagoas, a EMATER-MG, a Embrapa Milho e Sorgo e a EPAMIG em melhor informar o produtor a respeito das possibilidades de acréscimos tecnológicos à lavoura. Políticas voltadas para o incremento na produção de agricultores familiares necessitam incorporar a noção de externalidades negativas para que as mudanças sugeridas e implementadas sejam realmente capazes de melhorar a condição de vida dos produtores familiares e do entorno.bitstream/item/33558/1/bol-31.pd
Chitin-Like Molecules Associate with Cryptococcus neoformans Glucuronoxylomannan To Form a Glycan Complex with Previously Unknown Properties
In prior studies, we demonstrated that glucuronoxylomannan (GXM), the major capsular polysaccharide of the fungal pathogen Cryptococcus neoformans, interacts with chitin oligomers at the cell wall-capsule interface. the structural determinants regulating these carbohydrate-carbohydrate interactions, as well as the functions of these structures, have remained unknown. in this study, we demonstrate that glycan complexes composed of chitooligomers and GXM are formed during fungal growth and macrophage infection by C. neoformans. To investigate the required determinants for the assembly of chitin-GXM complexes, we developed a quantitative scanning electron microscopy-based method using different polysaccharide samples as inhibitors of the interaction of chitin with GXM. This assay revealed that chitin-GXM association involves noncovalent bonds and large GXM fibers and depends on the N-acetyl amino group of chitin. Carboxyl and O-acetyl groups of GXM are not required for polysaccharide-polysaccharide interactions. Glycan complex structures composed of cryptococcal GXM and chitin-derived oligomers were tested for their ability to induce pulmonary cytokines in mice. They were significantly more efficient than either GXM or chitin oligomers alone in inducing the production of lung interleukin 10 (IL-10), IL-17, and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha). Sports teams as complex adaptive systems: manipulating player numbers shapes behaviours during football small-sided games
Small-sided and conditioned games (SSCGs) in sport have been modelled as complex adaptive systems. Research has shown that the relative space per player (RSP) formulated in SSCGs can impact on emergent tactical behaviours. In this study we adopted a systems orientation to analyse how different RSP values, obtained through manipulations of player numbers, influenced four measures of interpersonal coordination observed during performance in SSCGs. For this purpose we calculated positional data (GPS 15 Hz) from ten U-15 football players performing in three SSCGs varying in player numbers (3v3, 4v4 and 5v5). Key measures of SSCG system behaviours included values of (1) players’ dispersion, (2) teams’ separateness, (3) coupling strength and time delays between participants’ emerging movements, respectively. Results showed that values of participants’ dispersion increased, but the teams’ separateness remained identical across treatments. Coupling strength and time delay also showed consistent values across SSCGs. These results exemplified how complex adaptive systems, like football teams, can harness inherent degeneracy to maintain similar team spatial–temporal relations with opponents through changes in inter-individual coordination modes (i.e., players’ dispersion). The results imply that different team behaviours might emerge at different ratios of field dimension/player numbers. Therefore, sport pedagogists should carefully evaluate the effects of changing RSP in SSCGs as a way of promoting increased or decreased pressure on players
