Characteristics of basal gastric juice in Helicobacter pylori-associated gastritis before and after eradication therapy
Purpose: To evaluate the characteristics of basal gastric juice in Helicobacter pylori-positive patients before and after Helicobacter pylori eradication therapy.
Methods: This was a cross-sectional descriptive study on 150 gastritis patients admitted at the Hospital of Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy. The patients were divided into 2 groups: study group (Helicobacter pylori gastritis patients) and control group (non-Helicobacter pylori gastritis patients). The pH, HCO3- concentration, and activities and concentrations of pepsin, lipase, and amylase were determined before and after treatment in study group.
Results: Patients with abnormal gastric juice comprised 76 % of the study population. Mean gastric potential of hydrogen (pH) was 2.31 (range: 1.64 - 7.68), while median concentration of HCO3- was 4.06 mmol/L (range: 0 - 73.04 mmol/L). The concentrations of pepsin, lipase, and amylase were 8.93, 0.93 and 1.38 ppm, respectively. Activities of pepsin, lipase, and amylase were 2.23, 0.28 and 0.04 U/mL, respectively. After the successful eradication of Helicobacter pylori, pH and HCO3- levels decreased, and there were significant differences in activities of pepsin and lipase before and after treatment (p < 0.05). Moreover, the levels of these parameters differed between patients in whom successful eradication was achieved and those in whom eradication failed (p < 0.05). The concentrations and activities of pepsin and lipase were statistically different between pre-treatment and post-treatment stages in both successful and failed Helicobacter pylori eradication categories (p < 0.05).
Conclusion: Basal gastric juice differs significantly between Helicobacter pylori-positive and Helicobacter pylori-negative patients. Intragastric ammonia produced by H. pylori may have a role in the increased pH of gastric juice

Somatic embryogenesis and plant regeneration from leaf callus with genetic stability validation using SCoT markers in Paramignya trimera, a medicinal plant native to Vietnam
Xao tam phan (Paramignya trimera (Oliv.) Guillaum) is a medicinal plant native to Vietnam, that is renowned for its therapeutic properties, particularly for the treatment of various ailments, including cancer. This study investigated in vitro propagation of P. trimera through somatic embryogenesis and shoot organogenesis using leaf callus. Various culture media, plant growth regulators, malt extract, and carbon sources were evaluated to optimize callus induction and somatic embryo formation from leaf explants. DNA barcoding confirmed 96.96% to 100% homology with P. trimera specimens from Khanh Hoa province, Vietnam. The highest callus formation rate, reaching 100%, was observed in one-year-old explants cultured in Woody Plant Medium (WPM) supplemented with 2.0 mg L-1 naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) and 0.2 mg L-1 benzylaminopurine (BAP) in the dark for over six weeks. In WPM supplemented with 30 g L-1 sucrose, 4.0 mg L-1 BAP, and 500 mg L-1 malt extract, globular stage embryos developed into embryoids and shoots and buds clumped at 10 and 18 weeks, respectively. Shoot organogenesis was observed in WPM supplemented with 30 g L-1 sucrose and 0.07 mg L-1 thidiazuron (TDZ) after 18 weeks of culture. Genetic fidelity assessments using 12 SCoT markers indicated that in vitro plantlets were homologous to the mother plant. This study provides a viable method for the conservation and sustainable cultivation of Xao tam phan, ensuring a stable supply of this valuable medicinal resource
Aquilaria yunnanensis S.C. Huang (Thymelaeaceae), A New Record for the Flora of Vietnam
Aquilaria yunnanensis S.C. Huang (Thymelaeaceae), known to be endemic to Yunnan, is recorded for the first time from Dong Son Ky Thuong Nature Reserve, Quang Ninh Province, Vietnam. A taxonomic description and DNA analysis based on our Vietnamese collections are presented, together with information on its distribution, habitat and colour photographs
An Outbreak of Severe Infections with Community-Acquired MRSA Carrying the Panton-Valentine Leukocidin Following Vaccination
Background: Infections with community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) are emerging
worldwide. We investigated an outbreak of severe CA-MRSA infections in children following out-patient vaccination.
Methods and Findings: We carried out a field investigation after adverse events following immunization (AEFI) were reported. We reviewed the clinical data from all cases. S. aureus recovered from skin infections and from nasal and throat swabs were analyzed by pulse-field gel electrophoresis, multi locus sequence typing, PCR and microarray. In May 2006, nine children presented with AEFI, ranging from fatal toxic shock syndrome, necrotizing soft tissue infection, purulent abscesses, to fever
with rash. All had received a vaccination injection in different health centres in one District of Ho Chi Minh City. Eight children had been vaccinated by the same health care worker (HCW). Deficiencies in vaccine quality, storage practices, or preparation and delivery were not found. Infection control practices were insufficient. CA-MRSA was cultured in four children and from nasal and throat swabs from the HCW. Strains from children and HCW were indistinguishable. All carried the Panton-Valentine leukocidine (PVL), the staphylococcal enterotoxin B gene, the gene complex for staphylococcal-cassette-chromosome mec type V, and were sequence type 59. Strain HCM3A is epidemiologically unrelated to a strain of ST59 prevalent in the USA, althoughthey belong to the same lineage.
Conclusions. We describe an outbreak of infections with CA-MRSA in children, transmitted by an asymptomatic colonized HCW during immunization injection. Consistent adherence to injection practice guidelines is needed to prevent CA-MRSA transmission in both in- and outpatient settings
Vocational Training for Rural Workers n the Context of Economic Restructuring in Ha Tinh Province, Vietnam
Labor force development is one of the strategic solutions in the process of shifting the agricultural and rural economy to commodity production in accordance with economic restructuring. The article aims at discussing the trend of economic restructuring in Ha Tinh province in recent years, surveying vocational training needs of rural workers and vocational training results in Ha Tinh province in the context of economic restructuring. The research utilizes a binary logit model for primary data collected in a sample of 334 working-age people in Ha Tinh province to examine the vocational training needs of rural laborers in Ha Tinh. It is found that economic restructuring and state policies have a significant effect on the vocational training needs of rural workers. In addition, the change in vocational training pattern is relatively in line with the change in economic restructuring. The study also gives some recommendations for rural vocational training policy in Ha Tinh province
