Monitoring Winter Flow Conditions on the Ivishak River, Alaska
The Sagavanirktok River, a braided river on the Alaska North Slope, flows adjacent to the trans-Alaska pipeline for approximately 100 miles south of Prudhoe Bay. During an unprecedented flooding event in mid-May 2015, the pipeline was exposed in an area located approximately 20 miles south of Prudhoe Bay. The Ivishak River is a main tributary of the Sagavanirktok River, but little is known about its water flow characteristics and contribution to the Sagavanirktok River, especially in winter and during spring breakup. To gather this information, we installed water level sensors on two main tributaries of the Ivishak River (Upper Ivishak and Saviukviayak rivers), early in winter season 2016â2017, in open-water channels that showed promise as locations for long-term gauging stations. Our ultimate goal was to find a location for permanent deployment of water level sensors. By February, the first sites chosen were ice covered, so two additional sensors, one on each river, were deployed in different locations. Some of the sensors were lost (i.e., carried away by the current or buried under a thick layer of sediments). Water level data gathered from the sensors showed a maximum change of 1.07 m. Winter discharge measurements indicate a 44% reduction between February and April 2017. A summer discharge measurement shows a 430% increase from winter to summer
Context-dependent Trust Decisions with Subjective Logic
A decision procedure implemented over a computational trust mechanism aims to
allow for decisions to be made regarding whether some entity or information
should be trusted. As recognised in the literature, trust is contextual, and we
describe how such a context often translates into a confidence level which
should be used to modify an underlying trust value. J{\o}sang's Subjective
Logic has long been used in the trust domain, and we show that its operators
are insufficient to address this problem. We therefore provide a
decision-making approach about trust which also considers the notion of
confidence (based on context) through the introduction of a new operator. In
particular, we introduce general requirements that must be respected when
combining trustworthiness and confidence degree, and demonstrate the soundness

Extensive reuse of soda-lime waste glass in fly ash-based geopolymers
The possibility of extensive incorporation of soda-lime waste glass in the synthesis of fly ash-based geopolymers was investigated. Using waste glass as silica supplier avoids the use of water glass solution as chemical activator. The influence of the addition of waste glass on the microstructure and strength of fly ash-based geopolymers was studied through microstructural and mechanical characterization. Leaching analyses were also carried out. The samples were developed changing the SiO2/Al2O3 molar ratio and the molarity of the sodium hydroxide solution used as alkaline activator. The results suggest that increasing the amount of waste glass as well as increasing the molarity of the solution lead to the formation of zeolite crystalline phases and an improvement of the mechanical strength. Leaching results confirmed that the new geopolymers have the capability to immobilize heavy metal ions
Missing Phases of Deliberation Dialogue for Real Applications
Models of deliberative dialogue are fundamental for developing autonomous systems that support human practical reasoning. However, we must consider whether these existing models are able to capture the complexity and richness of natural deliberation for developing real applications. In real contexts, circumstances relevant to the decision can change rapidly. In this paper, we introduce an extension to today\u27s leading model of deliberation dialogue to capture dynamic changes of circumstances during dialogue. Moreover, in natural deliberation, a dialogue may be successful even if a decision on what to do has not been made. A set of criteria is proposed to address the problem of when to close o the practical reasoning phase of dialogue. We then discuss some initial efforts to introduce those characteristics within an existing model of deliberation for agent collaboration. We believe that our extended model of dialogue may represent that richness of natural deliberative dialogue that is yet to be addressed in existing models of agent deliberatio
On natural language generation of formal argumentation
In this paper we provide a first analysis of the research questions that arise when dealing with the problem of communicating pieces of formal argumentation through natural language interfaces. It is a generally held opinion that formal models of argumentation naturally capture human argument, and some preliminary studies have focused on justifying this view. Unfortunately, the results are not only inconclusive, but seem to suggest that explaining formal argumentation to humans is a rather articulated task. Graphical models for expressing argumentation-based reasoning are appealing, but often humans require significant training to use these tools effectively. We claim that natural language interfaces to formal argumentation systems offer a real alternative, and may be the way forward for systems that capture human argument.Publisher PD
Speech Acts and Burden of Proof in Computational Models of Deliberation Dialogue
We argue that burden of proof (BoP) of the kind present in persuasion does not apply to deliberation. We analyze existing computational models showing that in deliberation agents may answer a critique but there is no violation of the protocol if they choose not to. We propose a norm-Âââgoverned dialogue where BoP in persuasion is modeled as an obligation to respond, and permissions capture the different types of constraint observed in deliberation
