Copper emissions from a high volume air sampler
High volume air samplers (hi vols) are described which utilize a brush-type electric motor to power the fans used for pulling air through the filter. Anomalously high copper values were attributed to removal of copper from the commutator into the air stream due to arcing of the brushes and recirculation through the filter. Duplicate hi vols were set up under three operating conditions: (1) unmodified; (2) gasketed to prevent internal recirculation; and (3) gasketed and provided with a pipe to transport the motor exhaust some 20 feet away. The results of 5 days' operation demonstrate that hi vols can suddenly start emitting increased amounts of copper with no discernible operational indication, and that recirculation and capture on the filter can take place. Copper levels found with hi vols whose exhaust was discharged at a distance downwind were among the lowest found, and apparently provides a satisfactory solution to copper contamination

Stacked optical antennas for plasmon propagation in a 5 nm-confined cavity
The sub-wavelength concentration and propagation of electromagnetic energy are two complementary aspects of plasmonics that are not necessarily co-present in a single nanosystem. Here we exploit the strong nanofocusing properties of stacked optical antennas in order to highly concentrate the electromagnetic energy into a 5 nm metal-insulator-metal (MIM) cavity and convert free radiation into guided modes. The proposed nano-architecture combines the concentration properties of optical nanoantennas with the propagation capability of MIM systems, paving the way to highly miniaturized on-chip plasmonic waveguiding
Open and / or laparoscopic surgical treatment of liver hydatic cysts
Hydatid disease is a severe parasitic disease with a widely ranging distribution. In the human being the liver is the most frequent organ affected. 1 The treatment should be individualized to the morphology, size, number and location of the cysts, that is why a variety of surgical operations have been advocated from complete resection like total pericystectomy or partial hepatectomy to laparoscopy to a minimally invasive procedures like percutaneous aspiration of cysts to conservative drug therapy. 3-4 This study compares laparoscopic versus open management of the hydatid cyst of liver the surgical approach to liver echinococcosis is still a controversial issue and shows our results of surgical treatment of liver hydatid cysts during a 3-years period
Unstable GRB photospheres and electron-positron annihilation lines
We propose an emission mechanism of prompt gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) that can
reproduce the observed non-thermal spectra with high radiative efficiencies,
>50%. Internal dissipation below a photosphere can create a radiation-dominated
thermal fireball. If electron-positron pairs outnumber protons, radiative
acceleration of pairs drives the two-stream instabilities between pairs and
protons, leading to the ``proton sedimentation'' in the accelerating pair
frame. Pairs are continuously shock heated by proton clumps, scattering the
thermal photons into the broken power-law shape, with the non-thermal energy
that is comparable to the proton kinetic energy, consistent with observations.
Pair photospheres become unstable around the radius of the progenitor star
where strong thermalization occurs, if parameters satisfy the observed spectral
(Yonetoku) relation. Pair annihilation lines are predicted above continua,
which could be verified by GLAST.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure
Efficiency Crisis of Swift Gamma-Ray Bursts with Shallow X-ray Afterglows: Prior Activity or Time-Dependent Microphysics?
Most X-ray afterglows of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) observed by the Swift
satellite have a shallow decay phase t^{-1/2} in the first few hours. This is
not predicted by the standard afterglow model and needs an explanation. We
discuss that the shallow decay requires an unreasonably high gamma-ray
efficiency, >75-90%, within current models, which is difficult to produce by
internal shocks. Such a crisis may be avoided if a weak relativistic explosion
occurs ~10^3-10^6 s prior to the main burst or if the microphysical parameter
of the electron energy increases during the shallow decay, \epsilon_e ~
t^{1/2}. The former explanation predicts a very long precursor, while both
prefer dim optical flashes from the reverse shock, as was recently reported. We
also calculate the multi-wavelength afterglows and compare them with
observations. No optical break at the end of the shallow X-ray decay indicates
a preference for the time-dependent microphysics model with additionally
decaying magnetic fields, \epsilon_B ~ t^{-0.6}.Comment: 7 pages, 1 figure, accepted for publication in A&
The OmegaWhite Survey for Short-Period Variable Stars IV: Discovery of the warm DQ white dwarf OW J175358.85-310728.9
We present the discovery and follow-up observations of the second known
variable warm DQ white dwarf OW J175358.85-310728.9 (OW J1753-3107). OW
J1753-3107 is the brightest of any of the currently known warm or hot DQ and
was discovered in the OmegaWhite Survey as exhibiting optical variations on a
period of 35.5452 (2) mins, with no evidence for other periods in its light
curves. This period has remained constant over the last two years and a
single-period sinusoidal model provides a good fit for all follow-up light
curves. The spectrum consists of a very blue continuum with strong absorption
lines of neutral and ionised carbon, a broad He I 4471 A line, and possibly
weaker hydrogen lines. The C I lines are Zeeman split, and indicate the
presence of a strong magnetic field. Using spectral Paschen-Back model
descriptions, we determine that OW J1753-3107 exhibits the following physical
parameters: T_eff = 15430 K, log(g) = 9.0, log(N(C)/N(He)) = -1.2, and the mean
magnetic field strength is B_z =2.1 MG. This relatively low temperature and
carbon abundance (compared to the expected properties of hot DQs) is similar to
that seen in the other warm DQ SDSS J1036+6522. Although OW J1753-3107 appears
to be a twin of SDSS J1036+6522, it exhibits a modulation on a period slightly
longer than the dominant period in SDSS J1036+6522 and has a higher carbon
abundance. The source of variations is uncertain, but they are believed to
originate from the rotation of the magnetic white dwarf.Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, 7 tables. Accepted for publication by MNRA
Water Quality Assessment of Some Well Water in Erbil City by Quality Index, Kurdistan Region-Iraq
The present work is aimed at assessing the water quality index (WQI) for the six well in Erbil city. This has been determined by collecting groundwater samples and subjecting the samples to a comprehensive physicochemical analysis. For calculating the WQI, the following 8 parameters have been considered: EC, TDS, pH, Alkalinity, Hardness, NO3, Ca+2, Mg+2. The WQI for these samples ranges from 24.825 in Rizgari well No. 1 to 84.048 in Azadi well No. 8. The results indicated that water quality of wells (Azadi 8, Ankawa 9, Ronaky 1 and Badawa 13) remains Good and Tayrawa well No. 1 remains excellent in the years 2004, 2005, and 2012. But well of Rizgari No. 1 changed from good in year 2004 and to excellent in 2012
Application of Water Quality Index for Assessment Water Quality in Some Bottled Water Erbil City, Kurdistan Region, Iraq
Water quality index was applied to assessment water quality of six different types of bottled water that's available in Erbil city (Life, Shireen, Kani, Al-Hayat, Rawan, and Masafi) for drinking purposes, depending on the physicochemical parameters of water (Turbidity, EC, TDS, pH, Alkalinity, Hardness, Ca+2, Mg+2, and No3-2). The water quality index showed that the Life, Rawan, and Masafi are excellent; also Shireen, Kani, and Al-Hayat are good for drinking purposes depending on the World Health Organization (WHO) standards. The results indicate the bottled water quality generally changed from years 2009 to 2012, some of the bottles have changed to the better and improved their quality, and another's changed to the worse side and declined their quality. WQI is also suggested as a very helpful tool that enables the public and decision makers to evaluate water quality of different bottled waters
