Enforcing social norms: The morality of public shaming

    Get PDF
Public shaming plays an important role in upholding valuable social norms. But, under what conditions, if any, is it morally justifiable? Our aim in this paper is systemically to investigate the morality of public shaming, so as to provide an answer to this neglected question. We develop an overarching framework for assessing the justifiability of this practice, which shows that, while shaming can sometimes be morally justifiable, it very often is not. In turn, our framework highlights several reasons to be concerned about the increasingly widespread phenomenon of online public shaming

Applying a unified public relations evaluation model in a European context

The evaluation of public relations programmes has been a topic of keen interest to the public relations community for many years. A number of three level/stage models have been proposed to describe and explain the evaluation process. They have not been successful in terms of practitioner acceptance and have been criticised for being unrealistic and lacking feedback mechanisms. More recently the short-term and continuing models have been developed in response to these criticisms. This paper suggests a Unified Evaluation model which uses an established analysis of the communication/persuasion process as a framework to integrate and unify existing models that describe the public relations evaluation process. The proposed testing of this model in a European, transnational context is then outlined

Josef Meixner: his life and his orthogonal polynomials

    Get PDF
This paper starts with a biographical sketch of the life of Josef Meixner. Then his motivations to work on orthogonal polynomials and special functions are reviewed. Meixner's 1934 paper introducing the Meixner and Meixner-Pollaczek polynomials is discussed in detail. Truksa's forgotten 1931 paper, which already contains the Meixner polynomials, is mentioned. The paper ends with a survey of the reception of Meixner's 1934 paper.Comment: v4: 18 pages, generating function for Krawtchouk polynomials on p.10 correcte

User interaction and uptake challenges to successfully deploying Semantic Web technologies

The Semantic Web community could benefit greatly from 'eating its own dog food' in order to better understand the challenges and opportunities of a Semantic Web from the user perspective. In this paper we describe the deployment of Semantic Web applications and services at the 3rd European Semantic Web Conference (ESWC2006), before presenting results of an evaluation into how these technologies were experienced by delegates. Based on themes identified in the evaluation we highlight seven user interaction and uptake challenges raised by the conference experience, and discuss how these may generalize to the widespread deployment of Semantic Web technologies

A Taste for Dim Sum: Analysing the Financial Diffusion in the New Offshore Renminbi Debt Securities

    Get PDF
Periodically a major financial innovation creates a new product class that changes the financial landscape. Examples include junk bonds that enabled leveraged buyouts, securitization that stimulated off balance sheet growth in banks, and credit default swaps that offered pure trading in credit risk. Now new renminbi financial products are emerging as China opens its capital account, providing new opportunities for innovation in corporate finance that will promote financial stability and sustainable growth in China. This study illustrates the rapid growth in the use of these new products by Chinese and overseas firms. We use diffusion models to explore how participation in this market is influenced by greater depth and liquidity of the market, lower costs of issuance and greater expected appreciation of the renminbi against the US dollar. Understanding these offshore developments will help support smoother innovation in the onshore corporate bond market
