    Density Waves in a Transverse Electric Field

    In a quasi-one-dimensional conductor with an open Fermi surface, a Charge or a Spin Density Wave phase can be destroyed by an electric field perpendicular to the direction of high conductivity. This mechanism, due to the breakdown of electron-hole symmetry, is very similar to the orbital destruction of superconductivity by a magnetic field, due to time-reversal symmetry.Comment: 3 pages, Latex, 2 figures, to appear in Phys.     A String Approximation for Cooper Pair in High-Tc_{\bf c} superconductivity

    It is assumed that in some sense the High-Tc_c superconductivity is similar to the quantum chromodynamics (QCD). This means that the phonons in High-Tc_c superconductor have the strong interaction between themselves like to gluons in the QCD. At the experimental level this means that in High-Tc_c superconductor exists the nonlinear sound waves. It is possible that the existence of the strong phonon-phonon interaction leads to the confinement of phonons into a phonon tube (PT) stretched between two Cooper electrons like a hypothesized flux tube between quark and antiquark in the QCD. The flux tube in the QCD brings to a very strong interaction between quark-antiquark, the similar situation can be in the High-Tc_c superconductor: the presence of the PT can essentially increase the binding energy for the Cooper pair. In the first rough approximation the PT can be approximated as a nonrelativistic string with Cooper electrons at the ends. The BCS theory with such potential term is considered. It is shown that Green's function method in the superconductivity theory is a realization of discussed Heisenberg idea proposed by him for the quantization of nonlinear spinor field. A possible experimental testing for the string approximation of the Cooper pair is offered.Comment: Essential changes: (a) the section is added in which it is shown that Green's function method in the superconductivity theory is a realization of discussed Heisenberg quantization method; (b) Veneziano amplitude is discussed as an approximation for the 4-point Green's function in High-T_c; (c) it is shown that Eq.(53) has more natural solution on the layer rather than on 3 dimensional spac

    Retrospective study of pre-anesthetic electrocardiogram examination of 700 dogs conducted at the Veterinary Hospital of UFMG (2013-2014)

    Abstract: Pre-operative electrocardiograms performed in 700 dogs were analyzed in order to establish correlation between sex, age, indication for surgery, body condition score, breed and weight. Initially a clinical questionnaire was filled out from each owner, including age, breed, sex, weight, clinical history and surgical indication. Dogs above 6 years of age or those showing any kind of cardiac auscultation disturbances were referred to electrocardiogram (ECG) evaluation. All ECG were performed and analyzed by the same veterinary specialist. Abnormalities at ECG were founnd in 364 of 700 (52%) evaluated dogs, and the most frequent variation was sinus arrhythmia, observed in 293 dogs (25.4%). No significant correlation was found between the electrocardiographic alterations with weight, sex and age of the animals. Therefore ECG should be conducted routinely regardless of age, sex, breed or surgical indication, highlighting its value for determining a safe anesthetic protocol that promotes minimal cardiopulmonary depression and allows rapid post-surgical recovery

    Foram analisados e comparados, os registros eletrocardiográficos (ECG) obtidos pelos métodos convencional (Cv), computadorizado (Cp) e pela leitura direta do registro computadorizado impresso (CpP) de 30 gatos adultos sem raça definida, clinicamente normais e distribuídos em dois grupos: grupo F (n=16 fêmeas) e grupo M (n=14 machos). Para a análise estatística, utilizou-se o teste t. Não foi observada diferença entre os grupos. Entre os métodos, foram observadas diferenças quanto à duração em milissegundos da onda P e do complexo QRS, especialmente em relação ao método computadorizado

    Determination of left atrial volume in healthy dogs and dogs with myxomatous mitral valve disease

    Abstract: The left atrial volume (LAV) can be obtained using the biplane Simpson's method via echocardiography. Although in medicine this parameter has been considered to be a prognostic marker of left atrial enlargement in several cardiac diseases, in dogs with myxomatous mitral valve degeneration (MMVD), a valvulopathy characterized by left atrial (LA) volume overload, atrial enlargement is usually assessed by the LA-to-Aorta ratio (LA:Ao). Therefore, the body surface area (BSA)-indexed LAV was measured in healthy dogs and in dogs with MMVD using the biplane Simpson's method. For this purpose, a total of 107 healthy dogs (control) and 81 dogs with MMVD in ACVIM stages B1, B2 and C were assessed, with LAV being calculated during atrial diastole (d) and systole (s) through the biplane Simpson's method. Two-dimensional apical four-chamber (4C) and two-chamber (2C) images were obtained in every dog through the left parasternal window. The values obtained from healthy dogs were correlated with body weight using Pearson's test. An analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey's test were used to compare healthy and MMVD dogs, as well as to investigate differences according with MMVD stages. A strong positive correlation was documented between either LAVd (r> 0.77) or LAVs (r> 0.73) and body weight in healthy dogs. The BSA-indexed LAV calculated for MMVD dogs was significantly different (p<0.01) from that obtained for the control group. Also, LAV was significantly different (P<0.05) when stages B2 and C, and B1 and C were compared. In conclusion, this study provided a reference for left atrial volume and the applicability of this technique to assess atrial overload in dogs with varying-stage MMVD

    Infusão contínua de morfina ou fentanil, associados à lidocaína e cetamina, em cães anestesiados com isofluorano

    A técnica de analgesia multimodal, por meio da infusão contínua de fármacos, pode ser empregada para diminuir a incidência de sensibilização central durante a anestesia. Avaliaram-se as características cardiorrespiratórias, durante o procedimento de artroscopia de joelho, em cães anestesiados com isofluorano e monitorados por meio do índice biespectral, submetidos à infusão contínua de morfina ou fentanil, associada à lidocaína e cetamina. Utilizaram-se 16 cães adultos, machos ou fêmeas, os quais foram distribuídos aleatoriamente em dois grupos, denominados MLK - que recebeu morfina (3,3μg/kg/min), lidocaína (50μg/kg/min) e cetamina (10μg/kg/min) ou FLK - em que foi substituída a morfina pelo fentanil (0,03μg/kg/min). Os cães foram pré-tratados com levomepromazina (0,5mg/kg IV), induzidos à anestesia com propofol (5mg/kg) e mantidos com isofluorano, ajustando-se a concentração para obterem-se valores de índice biespectral entre 55 e 65. As mensurações da frequência cardíaca (FC), dos parâmetros eletrocardiográficos (ECG), das pressões arteriais sistólica (PAS), diastólica (PAD) e média (PAM), da tensão de dióxido de carbono expirado (EtCO2), da saturação de oxi-hemoglobina (SpO2), da frequência respiratória (FR) e da temperatura esofágica (T) iniciaram-se 30 minutos após a indução (M0) e continuaram após o início da infusão das soluções, em intervalos de 15 minutos (M15 a M75). Diferenças entre os grupos foram registradas para duração do complexo QRS (M60), para FC e T, entre M30 e M75, com MLK apresentando médias maiores que FLK, que registrou médias maiores que MLK para a SpO2 (M60), para os intervalos QT (M30 e M75) e RR (M0, M60 e M75). Concluiu-se que o emprego de morfina ou fentanil, associados à lidocaína e cetamina, promove efeitos semelhantes e não compromete as características avaliadas.The multimodal analgesia technique by continuous infusion of drugs can be used to decrease central sensitization during anesthesia. Cardiorespiratory parameters in isofluorane-anesthetized dogs during joint arthroscopy were evaluated. For this, 16 adult mongrel dogs were randomly divided into two groups, named MLK (morphine (3.3mg/kg/min), lidocaine (50μg/kg/min) and ketamine (10mg/kg/min)) or FLK (replacing morphine by fentanyl (0.03mg/kg/min). Levomepromazine (0.5mg/kg IV) was used as a preanesthetic medication, and propofol (5mg/kg IV) was used for induction and isoflurane was used for maintained general anesthesia, allowing the bispectral index to be maintained between 55 and 65. The measurements of heart rate (HR), eletrocardiographic, systolic (SAP), diastolic (DAP) and mean (MAP) arterial pressures, end-tidal carbon dioxide partial pressure (ETCO2), pulse oxygen saturation (SpO2) respiratory rate (RR) and esophageal temperature (T) were performed 30 minutes after induction (M0), and after the infusion of solutions, at 15 minute intervals (M15 to M75). Differences between groups were registered for the duration of the QRS complex (M60), for HR and T (from M30 to M75), with MLK recording a higher mean than FLK, which registered a lower value than MLK for SpO2 (M60), QT (M30 and M75) and RR (M0, M60 and M75) intervals.
