Discrete Model of Ideological Struggle Accounting for Migration
A discrete in time model of ideological competition is formulated taking into
account population migration. The model is based on interactions between global
populations of non-believers and followers of different ideologies. The complex
dynamics of the attracting manifolds is investigated.
Conversion from one ideology to another by means of (i) mass media influence
and (ii) interpersonal relations is considered. Moreover a different birth rate
is assumed for different ideologies, the rate being assumed to be positive for
the reference population, made of initially non-believers. Ideological
competition can happen in one or several regions in space. In the latter case,
migration of non-believers and adepts is allowed; this leads to an enrichment
of the ideological dynamics. Finally, the current ideological situation in the
Arab countries and China is commented upon from the point of view of the
presently developed mathematical model. The massive forced conversion by

Inferring periodic orbits from spectra of simple shaped micro-lasers
Dielectric micro-cavities are widely used as laser resonators and
characterizations of their spectra are of interest for various applications. We
experimentally investigate micro-lasers of simple shapes (Fabry-Perot, square,
pentagon, and disk). Their lasing spectra consist mainly of almost equidistant
peaks and the distance between peaks reveals the length of a quantized periodic
orbit. To measure this length with a good precision, it is necessary to take
into account different sources of refractive index dispersion. Our experimental
and numerical results agree with the superscar model describing the formation
of long-lived states in polygonal cavities. The limitations of the
two-dimensional approximation are briefly discussed in connection with

Dengue epidemic in southern Vietnam, 1998.
A widespread epidemic of dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) occurred in southern Vietnam in 1998, with 438.98 cases/100,000 population and 342 deaths. The number of DHF cases and deaths per 100,000 population increased 152.4% and 151.8%, respectively, over a 1997 epidemic. Dengue viruses were isolated from 143 patient blood samples; DEN-3 virus was identified as the predominant serotype, although a resurgence of DEN-4 was noted
Resonant Photon-Assisted Tunneling Through a Double Quantum Dot: An Electron Pump From Spatial Rabi Oscillations
The time average of the fully nonlinear current through a double quantum dot,
subject to an arbitrary combination of ac and dc voltages, is calculated
exactly using the Keldysh nonequilibrium Green function technique. When driven
on resonance, the system functions as an efficient electron pump due to Rabi
oscillation between the dots. The pumping current is maximum when the coupling

Charge-ordered ferromagnetic phase in manganites
A mechanism for charge-ordered ferromagnetic phase in manganites is proposed.
The mechanism is based on the double exchange in the presence of diagonal
disorder. It is modeled by a combination of the Ising double-exchange and the
Falicov-Kimball model. Within the dynamical mean-field theory the charge and
spin correlation function are explicitely calculated. It is shown that the
system exhibits two successive phase transitions. The first one is the
ferromagnetic phase transition, and the second one is a charge ordering. As a
result a charge-ordered ferromagnetic phase is stabilized at low temperature.Comment: To appear in Phys. Rev.
The Anderson Model out of equilibrium: Time dependent perturbations
The influence of high-frequency fields on quantum transport through a quantum
dot is studied in the low-temperature regime. We generalize the non crossing
approximation for the infinite-U Anderson model to the time-dependent case. The
dc spectral density shows asymmetric Kondo side peaks due to photon-assisted
resonant tunneling. As a consequence we predict an electron-photon pump at zero
bias which is purely based on the Kondo effect. In contrast to the resonant
level model and the time-independent case we observe asymmetric peak amplitudes
in the Coulomb oscillations and the differential conductance versus bias
voltage shows resonant side peaks with a width much smaller than the tunneling
rate. All the effects might be used to clarify the question whether quantum

Dielectric multilayer waveguides for TE and TM mode matching
We analyse theoretically for the first time to our knowledge the perfect
phase matching of guided TE and TM modes with a multilayer waveguide composed
of linear isotropic dielectric materials. Alongside strict investigation into
dispersion relations for multilayer systems, we give an explicit qualitative
explanation for the phenomenon of mode matching on the basis of the standard
one-dimensional homogenization technique, and discuss the minimum number of
layers and the refractive index profile for the proposed device scheme. Direct
applications of the scheme include polarization-insensitive, intermodal
dispersion-free planar propagation, efficient fibre-to-planar waveguide
coupling and, potentially, mode filtering. As a self-sufficient result, we
present compact analytical expressions for the mode dispersion in a finite,
N-period, three-layer dielectric superlattice.Comment: 13 pages with figure
