    Workers\u27 Compensation: Benefits, Costs, and Safety Under Alternative Insurance Arrangements

    Thomason, Schmidle, and Burton make use of a unique data set to delve into how insurance arrangements affect several objectives of the workers\u27 compensation (WC) program. They underscore the effects of deregulation and other changes in WC insurance pricing arrangements by performing empirical analyses that use state-specific cost, benefit, and injury data from 48 states for 1975-1995.     On two problems in graph Ramsey theory

    We study two classical problems in graph Ramsey theory, that of determining the Ramsey number of bounded-degree graphs and that of estimating the induced Ramsey number for a graph with a given number of vertices. The Ramsey number r(H) of a graph H is the least positive integer N such that every two-coloring of the edges of the complete graph KNK_N contains a monochromatic copy of H. A famous result of Chv\'atal, R\"{o}dl, Szemer\'edi and Trotter states that there exists a constant c(\Delta) such that r(H) \leq c(\Delta) n for every graph H with n vertices and maximum degree \Delta. The important open question is to determine the constant c(\Delta). The best results, both due to Graham, R\"{o}dl and Ruci\'nski, state that there are constants c and c' such that 2^{c' \Delta} \leq c(\Delta) \leq 2^{c \Delta \log^2 \Delta}. We improve this upper bound, showing that there is a constant c for which c(\Delta) \leq 2^{c \Delta \log \Delta}. The induced Ramsey number r_{ind}(H) of a graph H is the least positive integer N for which there exists a graph G on N vertices such that every two-coloring of the edges of G contains an induced monochromatic copy of H. Erd\H{o}s conjectured the existence of a constant c such that, for any graph H on n vertices, r_{ind}(H) \leq 2^{c n}. We move a step closer to proving this conjecture, showing that r_{ind} (H) \leq 2^{c n \log n}. This improves upon an earlier result of Kohayakawa, Pr\"{o}mel and R\"{o}dl by a factor of \log n in the exponent.Comment: 18 page

    The GPS Space Service Volume

    Prior to the advent of artificial satellites, the concept of navigating in space and the desire to understand and validate the laws of planetary and satellite motion dates back centuries. At the initiation of orbital flight in 1957, space navigation was dominated by inertial and groundbased tracking methods, underpinned by the laws of planetary motion. It was early in the 1980s that GPS was first explored as a system useful for refining the position, velocity, and timing (PVT) of other spacecraft equipped with GPS receivers. As a result, an entirely new GPS utility was developed beyond its original purpose of providing PVT services for land, maritime, and air applications. Spacecraft both above and below the GPS constellation now receive the GPS signals, including the signals that spill over the limb of the Earth. The use of radionavigation satellite services for space navigation in High Earth Orbits is in fact a capability unique to GPS. Support to GPS space applications is being studied and planned as an important improvement to GPS. This paper discusses the formalization of PVT services in space as part of an overall GPS improvement effort. It describes the GPS Space Service Volume (SSV) and compares it to the Terrestrial Service Volume (TSV). It also discusses SSV coverage with the current GPS constellation, coverage characteristics as a function of altitude, expected power levels, and coverage figures of merit

    The cut metric, random graphs, and branching processes

    In this paper we study the component structure of random graphs with independence between the edges. Under mild assumptions, we determine whether there is a giant component, and find its asymptotic size when it exists. We assume that the sequence of matrices of edge probabilities converges to an appropriate limit object (a kernel), but only in a very weak sense, namely in the cut metric. Our results thus generalize previous results on the phase transition in the already very general inhomogeneous random graph model we introduced recently, as well as related results of Bollob\'as, Borgs, Chayes and Riordan, all of which involve considerably stronger assumptions. We also prove corresponding results for random hypergraphs; these generalize our results on the phase transition in inhomogeneous random graphs with clustering.Comment: 53 pages; minor edits and references update

    Relevance of mytilid shell microtopographies for fouling defence - a global comparison

    Prevention of epibiosis is of vital importance for most aquatic organisms, which can have consequences for their ability to invade new areas. Surface microtopography of the shell periostracum has been shown to have antifouling properties for mytilid mussels, and the topography shows regional differences. This article examines whether an optimal shell design exists and evaluates the degree to which shell microstructure is matched with the properties of the local fouling community. Biomimics of four mytilid species from different regional provenances were exposed at eight different sites in both northern and southern hemispheres. Tendencies of the microtopography to both inhibit and facilitate fouling were detected after 3 and 6 weeks of immersion. However, on a global scale, all microtopographies failed to prevent fouling in a consistent manner when exposed to various fouling communities and when decoupled from other shell properties. It is therefore suggested that the recently discovered chemical anti-microfouling properties of the periostracum complement the anti-macrofouling defence offered by shell microtopography

    The amine:epoxide ratio at the interface of a glass fibre/epoxy matrix system and its influence on the interfacial shear strength

    The interfacial shear strength (IFSS) is commonly used for evaluating the adhesion at the interface between fibre and matrix. A glass fibre/epoxy matrix system was investigated. The surface coatings applied to glass fibres may result in a discrepancy in the amine:epoxide group ratio between the interface and the bulk matrix, consequently moving the ratio away from the optimum stoichiometric ratio most often used. The amine:epoxide group ratio in the matrix was varied to obtain the optimum ratio at the interface. The study found that the amine:epoxide ratio influenced the IFSS with an optimum just below the stoichiometric ratio. The microbond test was conducted in a thermal mechanical analyser (TMA) to determine the IFSS thus revealing an inverse dependency on the testing temperature: an increased testing temperature yields a decrease of IFSS. IFSS determined at temperatures below the glass transition temperature displays a decreasing trend at high amine:epoxide ratio whereas IFSS measured at testing temperatures above the glass transition temperature steadily increases as the amine:epoxide ratio increases. The microbond test was conducted using both a tensile tester and a TMA setup. The two microbond test setups yielded results with same behaviour of the IFSS as a function of the amine:epoxide ratio
