    Code smells survival analysis in web apps

    Web applications are heterogeneous, both in their target platform (split across client and server sides) and on the formalisms they are built with, usually a mixture of programming and formatting languages. This heterogeneity is perhaps an explanation why software evolution of web applications (apps) is a poorly addressed topic in the literature. In this paper we focus on web apps built with PHP, the most widely used server-side programming language. We analyzed the evolution of 6 code smells in 4 web applications, using the survival analysis technique. Since code smells are symptoms of poor design, it is relevant to study their survival, that is, how long did it take from their introduction to their removal. It is obviously desirable to minimize their survival. In our analysis we split code smells in two categories: scattered smells and localized smells, since we expect the former to be more harmful than the latter. Our results provide some evidence that the survival of PHP code smells depends on their spreadness. We have also analyzed whether the survival curve varies in the long term, for the same web application. Due to the increasing awareness on the potential harm-fulness of code smells, we expected to observe a reduction in the survival rate in the long term.     COMPROMETIMENTO ORGANIZACIONAL E PROFISSIONAL DA EQUIPE DE SAÚDE

    Scope of study: This research was carried out at a primary health care unit in Arequipa, Peru. Objective: To identify and analyze the organizational and professional commitment of workers in a primary health care team. Method: Case study involving 12 health professionals, in the light of Meyer and Allen’s theoretical model for Organizational and Professional Commitment, using semi structured interviews analyzed according to content analysis through subject matter. Results: The analysis led to the categorization by thematic groups on Affective, Instrumental and Normative bases. The first six were related to organizational commitment and the last four to professional commitment. Conclusions: We consider that commitment contributes to the identification of workers with their professional and organizational roles, showing greater motivation and, therefore, more involvement. Health organizations are expected to implement strategies and promote conditions that facilitate affective commitment in their employees. Campo de Estudio: La presente investigación fue realizada en un Servicio de Salud de Atención Primaria en Arequipa–Perú. Objetivo: identificar y analizar el compromiso organizacional y profesional de trabajadores que integran un equipo de atención primaria. Método: Estudio de caso realizado con 12 profesionales de salud, fundamentado en el modelo teórico de Meyer y Allen para el Compromiso Organizacional y Profesional, utilizando entrevistas semi-estructuradas analizadas según análisis de contenido por temática. Resultados: Del análisis resultó la categorización por núcleos temáticos en sus bases Afectiva, Instrumental y Normativa, siendo los seis primeros subtemas relacionados al compromiso organizacional y los cuatro últimos relacionados al compromiso profesional. Conclusiones: Comprendemos que el compromiso contribuye a que los trabajadores se identifiquen con sus roles profesionales y organizacionales, volviéndolos más motivados y por tanto más involucrados. Se espera que organizaciones de salud implementen estrategias y promuevan condiciones que favorezcan el compromiso afectivo entre sus empleados.  Campo do Estudo: A presente pesquisa foi realizada em uma Unidade de Atenção Primaria de Arequipa – Perú.     Bayesian inference of biochemical kinetic parameters using the linear noise approximation

    Background Fluorescent and luminescent gene reporters allow us to dynamically quantify changes in molecular species concentration over time on the single cell level. The mathematical modeling of their interaction through multivariate dynamical models requires the deveopment of effective statistical methods to calibrate such models against available data. Given the prevalence of stochasticity and noise in biochemical systems inference for stochastic models is of special interest. In this paper we present a simple and computationally efficient algorithm for the estimation of biochemical kinetic parameters from gene reporter data. Results We use the linear noise approximation to model biochemical reactions through a stochastic dynamic model which essentially approximates a diffusion model by an ordinary differential equation model with an appropriately defined noise process. An explicit formula for the likelihood function can be derived allowing for computationally efficient parameter estimation. The proposed algorithm is embedded in a Bayesian framework and inference is performed using Markov chain Monte Carlo. Conclusion The major advantage of the method is that in contrast to the more established diffusion approximation based methods the computationally costly methods of data augmentation are not necessary. Our approach also allows for unobserved variables and measurement error. The application of the method to both simulated and experimental data shows that the proposed methodology provides a useful alternative to diffusion approximation based methods

    Multi-step time series prediction intervals using neuroevolution

    Multi-step time series forecasting (TSF) is a crucial element to support tactical decisions (e.g., designing production or marketing plans several months in advance). While most TSF research addresses only single-point prediction, prediction intervals (PIs) are useful to reduce uncertainty related to important decision making variables. In this paper, we explore a large set of neural network methods for multi-step TSF and that directly optimize PIs. This includes multi-step adaptations of recently proposed PI methods, such as lower--upper bound estimation (LUBET), its ensemble extension (LUBEXT), a multi-objective evolutionary algorithm LUBE (MLUBET) and a two-phase learning multi-objective evolutionary algorithm (M2LUBET). We also explore two new ensemble variants for the evolutionary approaches based on two PI coverage--width split methods (radial slices and clustering), leading to the MLUBEXT, M2LUBEXT, MLUBEXT2 and M2LUBEXT2 methods. A robust comparison was held by considering the rolling window procedure, nine time series from several real-world domains and with different characteristics, two PI quality measures (coverage error and width) and the Wilcoxon statistic.     Restoring tibiofemoral alignment during ACL reconstruction results in better knee biomechanics

    "Published online: 24 October 2017"PURPOSE: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction (ACLR) aims to restore normal knee joint function, stability and biomechanics and in the long term avoid joint degeneration. The purpose of this study is to present the anatomic single bundle (SB) ACLR that emphasizes intraoperative correction of tibiofemoral subluxation that occurs after ACL injury. It was hypothesized that this technique leads to optimal outcomes and better restoration of pathological tibiofemoral joint movement that results from ACL deficiency (ACLD). METHODS: Thirteen men with unilateral ACLD were prospectively evaluated before and at a mean follow-up of 14.9 (SD = 1.8) months after anatomic SB ACLR with bone patellar tendon bone autograft. The anatomic ACLR replicated the native ACL attachment site anatomy and graft orientation. Emphasis was placed on intraoperative correction of tibiofemoral subluxation by reducing anterior tibial translation (ATT) and internal tibial rotation. Function was measured with IKDC, Lysholm and the Tegner activity scale, ATT was measured with the KT-1000 arthrometer and tibial rotation (TR) kinematics were measured with 3Dmotion analysis during a high-demand pivoting task. RESULTS: The results showed significantly higher TR of the ACL-deficient knee when compared to the intact knee prior to surgery (12.2° ± 3.7° and 10.7° ± 2.6° respectively, P = 0.014). Postoperatively, the ACLR knee showed significantly lower TR as compared to the ACL-deficient knee (9.6°±3.1°, P = 0.001) but no difference as compared to the control knee (n.s.). All functional scores were significantly improved and ATT was restored within normal values (P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Intraoperative correction of tibiofemoral subluxation that results after ACL injury is an important step during anatomic SB ACLR. The intraoperative correction of tibiofemoral subluxation along with the replication of native ACL anatomy results in restoration of rotational kinematics of ACLD patients to normal levels that are comparable to the control knee. These results indicate that the reestablishment of tibiofemoral alignment during ACLR may be an important step that facilitates normal knee kinematics postoperatively.     Maternal environment shapes the life history and susceptibility to malaria of Anopheles gambiae mosquitoes

    BACKGROUND: It is becoming generally recognized that an individual's phenotype can be shaped not only by its own genotype and environmental experience, but also by its mother's environment and condition. Maternal environmental factors can influence mosquitoes' population dynamics and susceptibility to malaria, and therefore directly and indirectly the epidemiology of malaria. METHODS: In a full factorial experiment, the effects of two environmental stressors - food availability and infection with the microsporidian parasite Vavraia culicis - of female mosquitoes (Anopheles gambiae sensu stricto) on their offspring's development, survival and susceptibility to malaria were studied. RESULTS: The offspring of A. gambiae s.s. mothers infected with V. culicis developed into adults more slowly than those of uninfected mothers. This effect was exacerbated when mothers were reared on low food. Maternal food availability had no effect on the survival of their offspring up to emergence, and microsporidian infection decreased survival only slightly. Low food availability for mothers increased and V. culicis-infection of mothers decreased the likelihood that the offspring fed on malaria-infected blood harboured malaria parasites (but neither maternal treatment influenced their survival up to dissection). CONCLUSIONS: Resource availability and infection with V. culicis of A. gambiae s.s. mosquitoes not only acted as direct environmental stimuli for changes in the success of one generation, but could also lead to maternal effects. Maternal V. culicis infection could make offspring more resistant and less likely to transmit malaria, thus enhancing the efficacy of the microsporidian for the biological control of malaria
