The phase diagram of Yang-Mills theory with a compact extra dimension
We present a non-perturbative study of the phase diagram of SU(2) Yang-Mills
theory in a five-dimensional spacetime with a compact extra dimension. The
non-renormalizable theory is regularized on an anisotropic lattice and
investigated through numerical simulations in a regime characterized by a
hierarchy between the scale of low-energy physics, the inverse compactification
radius, and the cutoff scale. We map out the structure of the phase diagram and
the pattern of lines corresponding to fixed values of the ratio between the
mass of the fifth component of the gauge field and the non-perturbative mass
gap of the four-dimensional modes. We discuss different limits of the model,
and comment on the implications of our findings.Comment: 17 pages, 9 figure
P-odd and CP-odd Four-Quark Contributions to Neutron EDM
In a class of beyond-standard-model theories, CP-odd observables, such as the
neutron electric dipole moment, receive significant contributions from
flavor-neutral P-odd and CP-odd four-quark operators. However, considerable
uncertainties exist in the hadronic matrix elements of these operators strongly
affecting the experimental constraints on CP-violating parameters in the
theories. Here we study their hadronic matrix elements in combined chiral
perturbation theory and nucleon models. We first classify the operators in
chiral representations and present the leading-order QCD evolutions. We then
match the four-quark operators to the corresponding ones in chiral hadronic
theory, finding symmetry relations among the matrix elements. Although this
makes lattice QCD calculations feasible, we choose to estimate the
non-perturbative matching coefficients in simple quark models. We finally
compare the results for the neutron electric dipole moment and P-odd and CP-odd
pion-nucleon couplings with the previous studies using naive factorization and
QCD sum rules. Our study shall provide valuable insights on the present
hadronic physics uncertainties in these observables.Comment: 40 pages, 7 figures. This is the final version. A discussion of the

Characterization of Annona cherimola mill. Seed oil from Madeira Island: a possible biodiesel feedstock
The possibility of using Annona seed oil as an
added value product, namely as a source of biodiesel, is
explored. Milled Annona seeds were extracted with hexane
at room temperature (72 h) and at solvent boiling point
(6 h). Oil content was found to be 25 and 22.4% respec tively. The oil was characterized in terms of lipid compo sition (HPLC–APCI–MS and 13C NMR), resistance to
oxidation and acidity index. FAME composition was
determined by GC–MS and five major peaks were identi fied. Production of biodiesel from Annona’s seed oil was
achieved by base-catalyzed transesterification. Density,
viscosity, refraction coefficient, acid value, cold filter
plugging point, cloud point and oxidation stability were
measured. The iodine value and the ‘‘apparent cetane
number’’ were calculated. Density, viscosity, acid value,
iodine value, cold filter plugging point and cloud point
were within EN14214 specifications and the calculated
‘‘apparent cetane number’’ was also indicative of a suitable

Supersymmetric Nonlinear O(3) Sigma Model on the Lattice
A supersymmetric extension of the nonlinear O(3) sigma model in two spacetime
dimensions is investigated by means of Monte Carlo simulations. We argue that
it is impossible to construct a lattice action that implements both the O(3)
symmetry as well as at least one supersymmetry exactly at finite lattice
spacing. It is shown by explicit calculations that previously proposed
discretizations fail to reproduce the exact symmetries of the target manifold
in the continuum limit. We provide an alternative lattice action with exact
O(3) symmetry and compare two approaches based on different derivative
operators. Using the nonlocal SLAC derivative for the quenched model on
moderately sized lattices we extract the value {\sigma}(2, u_0) = 1.2604(13)
for the step scaling function at u_0 = 1.0595, to be compared with the exact
value 1.261210. For the supersymmetric model with SLAC derivative the discrete
chiral symmetry is maintained but we encounter strong sign fluctuations,
rendering large lattice simulations ineffective. By applying the Wilson
prescription, supersymmetry and chiral symmetry are broken explicitly at finite
lattice spacing, though there is clear evidence that both are restored in the
continuum limit by fine tuning of a single mass parameter.Comment: 35 pages, 36 figures, 2 tables; updated version as accepted by JHE
Azimuthal anisotropy in Au+Au collisions at sqrtsNN = 200 GeV
The results from the STAR Collaboration on directed flow (v_1), elliptic flow
(v_2), and the fourth harmonic (v_4) in the anisotropic azimuthal distribution
of particles from Au+Au collisions at sqrtsNN = 200 GeV are summarized and
compared with results from other experiments and theoretical models. Results
for identified particles are presented and fit with a Blast Wave model.
Different anisotropic flow analysis methods are compared and nonflow effects
are extracted from the data. For v_2, scaling with the number of constituent
quarks and parton coalescence is discussed. For v_4, scaling with v_2^2 and
quark coalescence is discussed.Comment: 26 pages. As accepted by Phys. Rev. C. Text rearranged, figures
modified, but data the same. However, in Fig. 35 the hydro calculations are
corrected in this version. The data tables are available at

Campylobacter Infection as a Trigger for Guillain-Barré Syndrome in Egypt
BACKGROUND: Most studies of Campylobacter infection triggering Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) are conducted in western nations were Campylobacter infection and immunity is relatively rare. In this study, we explored Campylobacter infections, Campylobacter serotypes, autoantibodies to gangliosides, and GBS in Egypt, a country where Campylobacter exposure is common. METHODS: GBS cases (n = 133) were compared to age- and hospital-matched patient controls (n = 374). A nerve conduction study was performed on cases and a clinical history, serum sample, and stool specimen obtained for all subjects. RESULTS: Most (63.3%) cases were demyelinating type; median age four years. Cases were more likely than controls to have diarrhea (29.5% vs. 22.5%, Adjusted Odds Ratio (ORa) = 1.69, P = 0.03), to have higher geometric mean IgM anti-Campylobacter antibody titers (8.18 vs. 7.25 P<0.001), and to produce antiganglioside antibodies (e.g., anti-Gd1a, 35.3 vs. 11.5, ORa = 4.39, P<0.0001). Of 26 Penner:Lior Campylobacter serotypes isolated, only one (41:27, C. jejuni, P = 0.02) was associated with GBS. CONCLUSIONS: Unlike results from western nations, data suggested that GBS cases were primarily in the young and cases and many controls had a history of infection to a variety of Campylobacter serotypes. Still, the higher rates of diarrhea and greater antibody production against Campylobacter and gangliosides in GBS patients were consistent with findings from western countries
Modern tests of Lorentz invariance
Motivated by ideas about quantum gravity, a tremendous amount of effort over
the past decade has gone into testing Lorentz invariance in various regimes.
This review summarizes both the theoretical frameworks for tests of Lorentz
invariance and experimental advances that have made new high precision tests
possible. The current constraints on Lorentz violating effects from both
terrestrial experiments and astrophysical observations are presented.Comment: Modified and expanded discussions of various points. Numerous

Label-free cell separation and sorting in microfluidic systems
Cell separation and sorting are essential steps in cell biology research and in many diagnostic and therapeutic methods. Recently, there has been interest in methods which avoid the use of biochemical labels; numerous intrinsic biomarkers have been explored to identify cells including size, electrical polarizability, and hydrodynamic properties. This review highlights microfluidic techniques used for label-free discrimination and fractionation of cell populations. Microfluidic systems have been adopted to precisely handle single cells and interface with other tools for biochemical analysis. We analyzed many of these techniques, detailing their mode of separation, while concentrating on recent developments and evaluating their prospects for application. Furthermore, this was done from a perspective where inertial effects are considered important and general performance metrics were proposed which would ease comparison of reported technologies. Lastly, we assess the current state of these technologies and suggest directions which may make them more accessible
A Monte Carlo Simulation-Based Approach to Evaluate the Performance of Three Meteorological Drought Indices in Northwest of Iran
Although meteorological drought indices are considered as important tools for drought monitoring, they are embedded with different theoretical and experimental structures. Regarding the different geographic and climatic conditions around the world, the most meteorological drought indices have been commonly applied for drought monitoring in different parts of the world. Interestingly, it is observed that such indices in the published studies on drought monitoring have usually yielded inconsistent performance. On the other hand, most studies on drought monitoring as well as the performance of drought indices has been based on short-term historical data (less than 50 years). Therefore, this study aimed to analyze and compare the performance of three common indices of SPI, RAI and PNPI to predict long-term drought events using the Monte Carlo procedure and historical data. To do this end, the 50-year recorded or historical rainfall data across 11 synoptic stations in the Northwest of Iran were employed to generate 1000 synthetic data series so that the characteristics of long-term drought might be determined and the performance of those three indices might be analyzed and compared. The results indicated a very high comparative advantage of the SPI in terms of yielding a satisfactory and detailed analysis to determine the characteristics of long-term drought. Also, the RAI indicated significant deviations from normalized natural processes. However, these results could not reasonably and sufficiently predict long-term drought. Finally, the PNPI was determined as the most uncertain and spatial index (depending on average or coefficient of variation of rainfall data) in drought monitoring
