Observational constraint on dynamical evolution of dark energy
We use the Constitution supernova, the baryon acoustic oscillation, the
cosmic microwave background, and the Hubble parameter data to analyze the
evolution property of dark energy. We obtain different results when we fit
different baryon acoustic oscillation data combined with the Constitution
supernova data to the Chevallier-Polarski-Linder model. We find that the
difference stems from the different values of . We also fit the
observational data to the model independent piecewise constant parametrization.
Four redshift bins with boundaries at , 0.53, 0.85 and 1.8 were chosen
for the piecewise constant parametrization of the equation of state parameter
of dark energy. We find no significant evidence for evolving .
With the addition of the Hubble parameter, the constraint on the equation of
state parameter at high redshift isimproved by 70%. The marginalization of the

Unified Dark Matter models with fast transition
We investigate the general properties of Unified Dark Matter (UDM) fluid
models where the pressure and the energy density are linked by a barotropic
equation of state (EoS) and the perturbations are adiabatic. The
EoS is assumed to admit a future attractor that acts as an effective
cosmological constant, while asymptotically in the past the pressure is
negligible. UDM models of the dark sector are appealing because they evade the
so-called "coincidence problem" and "predict" what can be interpreted as
, but in general suffer the effects of a non-negligible
Jeans scale that wreak havoc in the evolution of perturbations, causing a large
Integrated Sachs-Wolfe effect and/or changing structure formation at small
scales. Typically, observational constraints are violated, unless the
parameters of the UDM model are tuned to make it indistinguishable from
CDM. Here we show how this problem can be avoided, studying in detail
the functional form of the Jeans scale in adiabatic UDM perturbations and
introducing a class of models with a fast transition between an early
Einstein-de Sitter CDM-like era and a later CDM-like phase. If the
transition is fast enough, these models may exhibit satisfactory structure
formation and CMB fluctuations. To consider a concrete case, we introduce a toy
UDM model and show that it can predict CMB and matter power spectra that are in

'An outsider in our midst': narratives of Neil Lennon, soccer and ethno-religious igotry in the Scottish press
This essay offers a critique of media narratives concerning soccer and those of 'difference' in contemporary Scotland, in particular those who have Irishness as their different identity. It examines certain newspaper narratives concerning Neil Lennon of Celtic FC during autumn 2005. During this period Lennon was characterized as a soccer villain. The commentaries drew on existing perceptions concerning his personality and style of play. More importantly Lennon's national identity (Irish) and his religious background (Catholic) were integrated into the narratives, marking him as an outsider in Scotland. These narratives resonate with public and private discourses of 'otherness' concerning the Irish Catholic diaspora community in Scotland. These broader discourses are manifest as ethno-religious prejudices directed against this community. The discourses of 'outsider' and 'otherness' that surround Lennon, Celtic FC and the Irish Catholic community expose the myth of Scotland's collective self-image as an egalitarian and inclusive society
Heirloom rice in Ifugao: an ‘anti-commodity’ in the process of commodification
We analyse the marketing of ‘heirloom rices’ produced in the Cordillera mountains of northern Luzon, the Philippines, as the commodification of a historical ‘anti-commodity’. We contend that, historically, rice was produced for social, cultural and spiritual purposes but not primarily for sale or trade. The Ifugaos were able to sustain terraced wet-rice cultivation within a system of ‘escape agriculture’ because they were protected from Spanish interference by the friction of terrain and distance. ‘Heirloom rice’ is a boundary concept that enables social entrepreneurs to commodify traditional landraces. Black Hole Spin via Continuum Fitting and the Role of Spin in Powering Transient Jets
The spins of ten stellar black holes have been measured using the
continuum-fitting method. These black holes are located in two distinct classes
of X-ray binary systems, one that is persistently X-ray bright and another that
is transient. Both the persistent and transient black holes remain for long
periods in a state where their spectra are dominated by a thermal accretion
disk component. The spin of a black hole of known mass and distance can be
measured by fitting this thermal continuum spectrum to the thin-disk model of
Novikov and Thorne; the key fit parameter is the radius of the inner edge of
the black hole's accretion disk. Strong observational and theoretical evidence
links the inner-disk radius to the radius of the innermost stable circular
orbit, which is trivially related to the dimensionless spin parameter a_* of
the black hole (|a_*| < 1). The ten spins that have so far been measured by
this continuum-fitting method range widely from a_* \approx 0 to a_* > 0.95.
The robustness of the method is demonstrated by the dozens or hundreds of
independent and consistent measurements of spin that have been obtained for
several black holes, and through careful consideration of many sources of
systematic error. Among the results discussed is a dichotomy between the
transient and persistent black holes; the latter have higher spins and larger
masses. Also discussed is recently discovered evidence in the transient sources

Black Hole, Jet, and Disk: The Universal Engine
In this paper I review the results of our ongoing project to investigate the
coupling between accretion disk and radio jet in galactic nuclei and stellar
mass black holes. We find a good correlation between the UV bump luminosity and
the radio luminosities of AGN, which improves upon the usual [OIII]/radio
correlations. Taking mass and energy conservation in the jet/disk system into
account we can successfully model the correlation for radio-loud and radio-weak
quasars. We find that jets are comparable in power to the accretion disk
luminosity, and the difference between radio-loud and radio-weak may correspond
to two natural stages of the relativistic electron distribution -- assuming
that radio weak quasars have jets as well. The distribution of flat- and
steep-spectrum sources is explained by bulk Lorentz factors gamma_j ~ 5-10. The
absence of radio-loud quasars below a critical optical luminosity coincides
with the FR I/FR II break and could be explained by a powerdependent,
``closing'' torus. This points towards a different type of obscuring torus in
radio-loud host galaxies which might be a consequence of past mergers (e.g. by
the temporary formation of a binary black-hole). Interaction of the jet with
the closing torus might in principle also help to make a jet radio-loud.
Turning to stellar-mass black holes we find that galactic jet sources can be
described with the same coupled jet/disk model as AGN which is suggestive of
some kind of universal coupling between jet and accretion disk around compact

Demonstration of the temporal matter-wave Talbot effect for trapped matter waves
We demonstrate the temporal Talbot effect for trapped matter waves using
ultracold atoms in an optical lattice. We investigate the phase evolution of an
array of essentially non-interacting matter waves and observe matter-wave
collapse and revival in the form of a Talbot interference pattern. By using
long expansion times, we image momentum space with sub-recoil resolution,
allowing us to observe fractional Talbot fringes up to 10th order.Comment: 17 pages, 7 figure
Kaon Production and Kaon to Pion Ratio in Au+Au Collisions at \snn=130 GeV
Mid-rapidity transverse mass spectra and multiplicity densities of charged
and neutral kaons are reported for Au+Au collisions at \snn=130 GeV at RHIC.
The spectra are exponential in transverse mass, with an inverse slope of about
280 MeV in central collisions. The multiplicity densities for these particles
scale with the negative hadron pseudo-rapidity density. The charged kaon to
pion ratios are and
for the most central collisions. The ratio is lower than the same
ratio observed at the SPS while the is higher than the SPS result.
Both ratios are enhanced by about 50% relative to p+p and +p
