Comparing re-surveys in Isernia and Venosa (Molise and Basilicata, Italy)
This paper addresses the value of re-surveys in two different regions with different cultural and landscape formation histories: the Upper Volturno basin in Molise (the hinterland of the colony of Aesernia, modern Isernia), and the Melfese area in Basilicata (the hinterland of the colony of Venusia, modern Venosa). In these areas, we compare legacy datasets with newly acquired survey data in the same areas, and compare the results by means of statistics (Chi-square) and visual exploration (cartographical and GIS-based analysis). The statistical comparisons of these different surveys show that site numbers may change significantly. This paper explores the reasons for these dynamics in the archaeological surface record by focussing especially on landscape changes.Classical & Mediterranean Archaeolog

Radiative corrections to low energy neutrino reactions
We show that the radiative corrections to charged current (CC) nuclear
reactions with an electron(positron) in the final state are described by a
universal function. The consistency of our treatment of the radiative
corrections with the procedure used to extract the value of the axial coupling
constant is discussed. To illustrate we apply our results to
(anti)neutrino deuterium disintegration and to fusion in the sun. The
limit of vanishing electron mass is considered, and a simple formula valid for
E_{obs}\gsim 1 MeV is obtained. The size of the nuclear structure-dependent
effects is also discussed. Finally, we consider CC transitions with an
electron(positron) in the initial state and discuss some applications to

Spontaneous CP Violating Phase as the Phase in PMNS Matrix
We study the possibility of identifying the CP violating phases in the PMNS
mixing matrix in the lepton sector and also that in the CKM mixing matrix in
the quark sector with the phase responsible for the spontaneous CP violation in
the Higgs potential, and some implications. Since the phase in the CKM mixing
matrix is determined by experimental data, the phase in the lepton sector is
therefore also fixed. The mass matrix for neutrinos is constrained leading to
constraints on the Jarlskog CP violating parameter , and the effective mass
for neutrinoless double beta decay. The Yukawa couplings are
also constrained. Different ways of identifying the phases have different
predictions for and . Future

On the Scalability of Snapshot Isolation
International audienceMany distributed applications require transactions. However, transactional protocols that require strong synchronization are costly in large scale environments. Two properties help with scalability of a transactional system: genuine partial replication (GPR), which leverages the intrinsic parallelism of a workload, and snapshot isolation (SI), which decreases the need for synchronization. We show that under standard assumptions (data store accesses are not known in advance, and transactions may access arbitrary objects in the data store), it is impossible to have both SI and GPR. Our impossibility result is based on a novel decomposition of SI which proves that, like serializability, SI is expressible on plain histories

Impaired liver regeneration in mice lacking methionine adenosyltransferase 1A
Methionine adenosyltransferase (MAT) is an essential enzyme because it catalyzes the formation of S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe), the principal biological methyl donor. Of the two genes that encode MAT, MAT1A is mainly expressed in adult liver and MAT2A is expressed in all extrahepatic tissues. Mice lacking MAT1A have reduced hepatic SAMe content and spontaneously develop hepatocellular carcinoma. The current study examined the influence of chronic hepatic SAMe deficiency on liver regeneration. Despite having higher baseline hepatic staining for proliferating cell nuclear antigen, MAT1A knockout mice had impaired liver regeneration after partial hepatectomy (PH) as determined by bromodeoxyuridine incorporation. This can be explained by an inability to up-regulate cyclin D1 after PH in the knockout mice. Upstream signaling pathways involved in cyclin D1 activation include nuclear factor kappaB (NFkappaB), the c-Jun-N-terminal kinase (JNK), extracellular signal-regulated kinases (ERKs), and signal transducer and activator of transcription-3 (STAT-3). At baseline, JNK and ERK are more activated in the knockouts whereas NFkappaB and STAT-3 are similar to wild-type mice. Following PH, early activation of these pathways occurred, but although they remained increased in wild-type mice, c-jun and ERK phosphorylation fell progressively in the knockouts. Hepatic SAMe levels fell progressively following PH in wild-type mice but remained unchanged in the knockouts. In culture, MAT1A knockout hepatocytes have higher baseline DNA synthesis but failed to respond to the mitogenic effect of hepatocyte growth factor. Taken together, our findings define a critical role for SAMe in ERK signaling and cyclin D1 regulation during regeneration and suggest chronic hepatic SAMe depletion results in loss of responsiveness to mitogenic signals
Atmospheric aerosols at the Pierre Auger Observatory and environmental implications
The Pierre Auger Observatory detects the highest energy cosmic rays.
Calorimetric measurements of extensive air showers induced by cosmic rays are
performed with a fluorescence detector. Thus, one of the main challenges is the
atmospheric monitoring, especially for aerosols in suspension in the
atmosphere. Several methods are described which have been developed to measure
the aerosol optical depth profile and aerosol phase function, using lasers and
other light sources as recorded by the fluorescence detector. The origin of
atmospheric aerosols traveling through the Auger site is also presented,
highlighting the effect of surrounding areas to atmospheric properties. In the
aim to extend the Pierre Auger Observatory to an atmospheric research platform,
