Ablowitz-Ladik system with discrete potential. I. Extended resolvent
Ablowitz-Ladik linear system with range of potential equal to {0,1} is
considered. The extended resolvent operator of this system is constructed and
the singularities of this operator are analyzed in detail.Comment: To be published in Theor. Math. Phy
Dynamic light scattering study on phase separation of a protein-water mixture: Application on cold cataract development in the ocular lens
We present a detailed dynamic light scattering study on the phase separation
in the ocular lens emerging during cold cataract development. Cold cataract is
a phase separation effect that proceeds via spinodal decomposition of the lens
cytoplasm with cooling. Intensity auto-correlation functions of the lens
protein content are analyzed with the aid of two methods providing information
on the populations and dynamics of the scattering elements associated with cold
cataract. It is found that the temperature dependence of many measurable
parameters changes appreciably at the characteristic temperature ~16+1 oC which
is associated with the onset of cold cataract. Extending the temperature range
of this work to previously inaccessible regimes, i.e. well below the phase
separation or coexistence curve at Tcc, we have been able to accurately
determine the temperature dependence of the collective and self-diffusion
coefficient of proteins near the spinodal. The analysis showed that the
dynamics of proteins bears some resemblance to the dynamics of structural
glasses where the apparent activation energy for particle diffusion increases
below Tcc indicating a highly cooperative motion. Application of ideas
developed for studying the critical dynamics of binary protein/solvent
mixtures, as well as the use of a modified Arrhenius equation, enabled us to
estimate the spinodal temperature Tsp of the lens nucleus. The applicability of
dynamic light scattering as a non-invasive, early-diagnostic tool for ocular
diseases is also demonstrated in the light of the findings of the present

Raman scattering study of the a-GeTe structure and possible mechanism for the amorphous-to-crystal transition
We report on an inelastic (Raman) light scattering study of the local
structure of amorphous GeTe films. A detailed analysis of the
temperature-reduced Raman spectra has shown that appreciable structural changes
occur as a function of temperature. These changes involve modifications of
atomic arrangements such as to facilitate the rapid amorphous-to-crystal
transformation, which is the major advantage of phase-change materials used in
optical data storage media. A particular structural model, supported by
polarization analysis, is proposed being compatible with the experimental data
as regards both the structure of a-GeTe and the crystallization transition. The
remarkable difference between the Raman spectrum of the crystal and the glass
can thus naturally be accounted for.Comment: Published in: J. Phys. Condens. Matter. 18, 965-979 (2006
Single-frame multiparameter platforms for seafloor geophysical and environmental observations: projects and missons from GEOSTAR to ORION
The paper presents an overview of recent seafloor long-term single-frame multiparameter platform developed in the framework of the European Commission and Italian projects starting from the GEOSTAR prototype. The main features of the different systems are described as well as the sea missions that led to their validation. The ORION seafloor observatory network recently developed, based on the GEOSTAR-type platforms and engaged in a deep-sea mission at 3300 m w.d. in the Mediterranean Sea, is also describe
A Roadmap for the Human Gut Cell Atlas
The number of studies investigating the human gastrointestinal tract using various single-cell profiling methods has increased substantially in the past few years. Although this increase provides a unique opportunity for the generation of the first comprehensive Human Gut Cell Atlas (HGCA), there remains a range of major challenges ahead. Above all, the ultimate success will largely depend on a structured and coordinated approach that aligns global efforts undertaken by a large number of research groups. In this Roadmap, we discuss a comprehensive forward-thinking direction for the generation of the HGCA on behalf of the Gut Biological Network of the Human Cell Atlas. Based on the consensus opinion of experts from across the globe, we outline the main requirements for the first complete HGCA by summarizing existing data sets and highlighting anatomical regions and/or tissues with limited coverage. We provide recommendations for future studies and discuss key methodologies and the importance of integrating the healthy gut atlas with related diseases and gut organoids. Importantly, we critically overview the computational tools available and provide recommendations to overcome key challenges
A Reporter Screen in a Human Haploid Cell Line Identifies CYLD as a Constitutive Inhibitor of NF-κB
The development of forward genetic screens in human haploid cells has the potential to transform our understanding of the genetic basis of cellular processes unique to man. So far, this approach has been limited mostly to the identification of genes that mediate cell death in response to a lethal agent, likely due to the ease with which this phenotype can be observed. Here, we perform the first reporter screen in the near-haploid KBM7 cell line to identify constitutive inhibitors of NF-κB. CYLD was the only currently known negative regulator of NF-κB to be identified, thus uniquely distinguishing this gene. Also identified were three genes with no previous known connection to NF-κB. Our results demonstrate that reporter screens in haploid human cells can be applied to investigate the many complex signaling pathways that converge upon transcription factors
