    Role of endocannabinoids in regulating drug dependence

    This review will discuss the latest knowledge of how the endocannabinoid system might be involved in treating addiction to the most common illicit drugs. Experimental models are providing increasing evidence for the pharmacological management of endocannabinoid signaling not only to block the direct reinforcing effects of cannabis, opioids, nicotine and ethanol, but also for preventing relapse to the various drugs of abuse, including opioids, cocaine, nicotine, alcohol and metamphetamine. Preclinical and clinical studies suggest that the endocannabinoid system can be manipulated by the CBI receptor antagonist SR141716A, that might constitute a new generation of compounds for treating addiction across different classes of abused drugs

    Low-energy Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty Repeated Annually: Rationale for the COAST Trial

    The recent Laser in Glaucoma and Ocular Hypertension Trial provided the evidentiary basis for a paradigm shift away from the historical medication-first approach to glaucoma--which has numerous limitations, the most important of which is poor adherence to therapy --and toward a laser-first approach. Now 20 years after its commercialization, selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) is routinely performed consistently with its initial description, with energy titrated to the appearance of fine, champagne-like cavitation bubbles. A recent data set suggested that lower energy SLT, applied as primary therapy and repeated annually irrespective of intraocular pressure--rather than pro re nata when its effect wanes and irrespective of intraocular pressure rises --yields longer medication-free survival than standard energy SLT repeated pro re nata. A new study--Clarifying the Optimal Application of SLT Therapy --has been initiated to explore this preliminary finding in a pair of consecutive randomized trials. Herein, we provide an evidence-based rationale for the use of low-energy SLT repeated annually as primary therapy for mild to moderate primary open-angle glaucoma or high-risk ocular hypertension

    Interpretation of uniocular and binocular trials of glaucoma medications: an observational case series

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>To predict the effectiveness of topical glaucoma medications based on initial uniocular and binocular treatment. To test a traditional hypothesis that effectiveness following a uniocular trial is associated with the change in IOP in the initially treated eye minus the change in the initially untreated eye. To determine whether uniocular or binocular treatment trials are superior.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Based on a review of medical records, we identified 168 instances in 154 patients with bilateral primary open angle glaucoma of initial uniocular use of a topical glaucoma medication with well-documented intraocular pressure (IOP) readings at baseline (IOP<sub>A</sub>), during the trial (IOP<sub>B</sub>), and at follow-up (IOP<sub>C</sub>). Abstracted data included demographic data, IOP, and medication use. Predictors of the IOP following the trial (IOP<sub>C</sub>) in each eye were identified by multivariable linear regression. In 70 cases, the predictive ability of initial uniocular and binocular treatment could be directly compared.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In a multivariable analysis, the follow-up pressure in the initially treated eye (IOP<sub>1C</sub>) was directly correlated with treated eye IOP during initial uniocular use (IOP<sub>1B</sub>, p < 0.001). In a multivariable analysis, the follow-up pressure in the initially untreated eye (IOP<sub>2C</sub>) was directly correlated with its baseline IOP<sub>2A </sub>(p < 0.001), and also tended to be associated with treated IOP<sub>1B </sub>(p = 0.07). The multivariable regression coefficient (b) for the IOP change in the initially untreated eye was generally not close to the value of -1 expected by the classic teaching (for eye 1, b = 0.04, p = 0.35; for eye 2, b = 0.07, p = 0.50). In 70 cases, the uniocular and binocular trials predicted a similar fraction of the variance in follow-up IOP<sub>1C </sub>(r<sup>2 </sup>= 0.56 and 0.57, respectively) and IOP<sub>2C </sub>(r<sup>2 </sup>= 0.39 and 0.38, respectively).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>1) For uniocular trials, the IOP change in the untreated eye should not be subtracted from that in the treated eye. 2) Uniocular and binocular trials have similar predictive value when interpreted correctly. Either may be selected based on clinical circumstances.</p

    Cross-Cultural Differences in the Perception of Lamb between New Zealand and Chinese Consumers in New Zealand

    This study investigated differences between general New Zealand consumers and ethnic Chinese consumers living in New Zealand regarding the importance of lamb attributes at the point of purchase and opinions of New Zealand lamb. A central location test survey was undertaken with 156 New Zealand consumers living in Dunedin, New Zealand, and 159 Chinese consumers living in Auckland, New Zealand. In terms of importance at the point of purchase, Chinese consumers rated a number of attributes as more important than New Zealand consumers by a difference of >1.0 on a 9-point Likert scale for importance: animal origin, feeding, age, presence of hormones/residues, traceability, food safety, place of purchase, brand/quality label, and label information (p 1.0 on a 7-point Likert scale for agreement.     Relationships among Consumer Liking, Lipid and Volatile Compounds from New Zealand Commercial Lamb Loins

    Loin sections (m. Longissimus lumborum) were collected at slaughter from forty-eight lamb carcasses to evaluate consumer-liking scores of six types of typical New Zealand commercial lamb and to understand the possible underlying reasons for those ratings. A consumer panel (n = 160) evaluated tenderness, juiciness, flavor liking, and overall liking of the different types of lamb loins. Consumer scores differed among the types of lamb meat for all the evaluated attributes (p < 0.05). Further segmentation based on overall liking scores showed two consumer clusters with distinct ratings. Correlation and external preference map analyses indicated that one consumer cluster (n = 75) liked lamb types that had lower total lipid content, a lower proportion of branched-chain fatty acids, oleic and heptadecanoic acids; and a higher proportion of polyunsaturated fatty acids and volatile compounds (green and fruity descriptors). Consumer liking of the other segment (n = 85) was less influenced by fatty acids and volatiles, except hexanoic, heptanoic and octanoic acids (rancid, fatty, and sweaty descriptors). Thus, the fatty acid profile and the volatile compounds derived from their oxidation upon cooking seem to be a stronger driver of consumer liking of lamb for some consumers than others.EEA BalcarceFil: Pavan, Enrique.     Increasing sustainability in pork production by using high inclusion levels of co-products distillers dried grains with solubles, wheat middling and canola meal doesn’t affect pig growth performance and meat quality but reduces boar taint

    Objective The present study is to examine the effect of high inclusion of co-products in pig diets (referred to as an alternative diet) during the finishing stage on pig growth performance, meat quality and boar taint compounds. Methods Growing pigs were fed an alternative diet made with distillers dried grains with solubles (25%), canola meal (20%), and wheat middling (15%) or a control diet based on barley and soybean meal to investigate the impact of co-products on pig performance and meat quality. Sixteen female and sixteen entire male Duroc×(Large White×Landrace) pigs (22.6±2.07 kg, body weight±standard error) were equally allocated to the diets. Results Pigs fed the alternative diet had a lower feed intake; however, growth rate and feed conversion efficiency were unaffected by diet. A diet by sex interaction was found for gain:feed whereby males fed the alternative diet had the best feed conversion (p<0.01). Pork from pigs fed the alternative diet had lower a* and Chroma and protein % (p<0.05), while other meat quality characteristics were unaffected. The alternative diet reduced backfat skatole levels (p<0.001). Conclusion A diet containing high inclusion levels of co-products can be fed to pigs during the finishing stage without detrimental effects on pig performance or meat quality and with the potential to enhance pork flavour. This finding suggests a solution to increase the sustainable development of pig production

    The STRIP instrument of the Large Scale Polarization Explorer: microwave eyes to map the Galactic polarized foregrounds

    In this paper we discuss the latest developments of the STRIP instrument of the "Large Scale Polarization Explorer" (LSPE) experiment. LSPE is a novel project that combines ground-based (STRIP) and balloon-borne (SWIPE) polarization measurements of the microwave sky on large angular scales to attempt a detection of the "B-modes" of the Cosmic Microwave Background polarization. STRIP will observe approximately 25% of the Northern sky from the "Observatorio del Teide" in Tenerife, using an array of forty-nine coherent polarimeters at 43 GHz, coupled to a 1.5 m fully rotating crossed-Dragone telescope. A second frequency channel with six-elements at 95 GHz will be exploited as an atmospheric monitor. At present, most of the hardware of the STRIP instrument has been developed and tested at sub-system level. System-level characterization, starting in July 2018, will lead STRIP to be shipped and installed at the observation site within the end of the year.
