Accounting for the finiteness of the Higgs-boson mass in the 3D Georgi-Glashow model

    Get PDF
(2+1)-dimensional Georgi-Glashow model is explored in the regime when the Higgs boson is not infinitely heavy, but its mass is rather of the same order of magnitude as the mass of the W boson. In the weak-coupling limit, the Debye mass of the dual photon and the expression for the monopole potential are found. The cumulant expansion applied to the average over the Higgs field is checked to be convergent for the known data on the monopole fugacity. These results are further generalized to the SU(N)-case. In particular, it is found that the requirement of convergence of the cumulant expansion establishes a certain upper bound on the number of colours. This bound, expressed in terms of the parameter of the weak-coupling approximation, allows the number of colours to be large enough. Finally, the string tension and the coupling constant of the so-called rigidity term of the confining string are found at arbitrary number of colours.Comment: 9 pages, LaTeX2e, no figure

Higgs-inspired corrections to the RG flow in the finite-temperature 3D Georgi-Glashow model and its SU(N)-generalization

The Berezinsky-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) RG flow in the ensemble of monopoles existing in the finite-temperature (2+1)D Georgi-Glashow model is explored in the regime when the Higgs field is not infinitely heavy, but its mass is rather of the same order of magnitude as the mass of the W-boson. The corrections to the standard RG flow are derived to the leading order in the inverse mass of the Higgs boson. According to the obtained RG equations, the scaling of the free-energy density in the critical region and the value of the critical temperature of the phase transition are found to be unaffected by the finiteness of the Higgs-boson mass. The evolution of the Higgs mass itself is also investigated and shown to be rather weak, that enables one to treat this parameter as a constant. The same analysis is further performed in the SU(N)-case at N>2, where the RG invariance is demonstrated to hold only approximately, in a certain sense. Modulo this approximation, the critical behaviour of the SU(N)-model turns out to be identical to that of the SU(2)-one.Comment: 12 pages, LaTeX2e, no figure

Hopf Structures on Ambiskew Polynomial Rings

We derive necessary and sufficient conditions for an ambiskew polynomial ring to have a Hopf algebra structure of a certain type. This construction generalizes many known Hopf algebras, for example U(sl2), U_q(sl2) and the enveloping algebra of the 3-dimensional Heisenberg Lie algebra. In a torsion-free case we describe the finite-dimensional simple modules, in particular their dimensions and prove a Clebsch-Gordan decomposition theorem for the tensor product of two simple modules. We construct a Casimir type operator and prove that any finite-dimensional weight module is semisimple.Comment: 23 page

Exploration-Exploitation Motivations: An Investigation of Biotechnology Firms’ Participation in Academic Consulting

    Get PDF
We employ the exploration-exploitation framework to examine how firm-level motivations influence a biotechnology firm’s participation in consulting agreements with university scientists. This study presents hypotheses that explore whether biotechnology firms use consulting agreements as vehicles to explore new knowledge to develop their absorptive capacity and initiate a relationship with a scientist’s university or to exploit their entrepreneurial orientation or formal technology transfer experience. Assessing survey data collected from biotechnology firms, our analysis revealed significant and positive associations for exploration motives; however, the findings were mixed for exploitation motives. The discussion offers theoretical and managerial implications and future research areas

An Examination of Façades of Conformity as a Social Mobility Strategy

    Get PDF
This study examines the façade of conformity construct as a social mobility strategy employed by minority employees to enhance their social identity in organizations.  Results from a survey of 102 African Americans employed in higher education indicate that demographic dissimilarity moderates the relationships between both perceived value of diversity and ethnic identity and facades of conformity.  The creation of facades of conformity is positively related to work stress, and work stress is negatively related to job satisfaction

    A Catalog of Absorption Lines in Eight HST/STIS E230M 1.0 < z < 1.7 Quasar Spectra

    Get PDF
We have produced a catalog of line identifications and equivalent width measurements for all absorption features in eight ultraviolet echelle quasar spectra. These spectra were selected as having the highest signal-to-noise among the HST/STIS spectra obtained with the E230M grating. We identify 56 metal-line systems toward the eight quasars, and present plots of detected transitions, aligned in velocity-space. We found that about 1/4 - 1/3 of the features in the Lya forest region, redward of the incidence of the Lyb forest, are metal lines. High ionization transitions are common. We see both O VI and C IV in 88 - 90% of the metal-line systems for which the spectra cover the expected wavelength. Si III is seen in 58%, while low ionization absorption in C II, Si II, and/or Al II is detected in 50% of the systems for which they are covered. This catalog will facilitate future studies of the Lya forest and of metal-line systems of various types.Comment: 13 pages, 2 figures, submitted to Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, a complete version with the appendix and all figures is available at http://www.astro.psu.edu/users/misawa/pub/Paper/qalcat.pdf.g

QSO 0130-4021: A third QSO showing a low Deuterium to Hydrogen Abundance Ratio

    Get PDF
We have discovered a third quasar absorption system which is consistent with a low deuterium to hydrogen abundance ratio, D/H = 3.4 times 10^-5. The z ~ 2.8 partial Lyman limit system towards QSO 0130-4021 provides the strongest evidence to date against large D/H ratios because the H I absorption, which consists of a single high column density component with unsaturated high order Lyman series lines, is readily modeled -- a task which is more complex in other D/H systems. We have obtained twenty-two hours of spectra from the HIRES spectrograph on the W.M. Keck telescope, which allow a detailed description of the Hydrogen. We see excess absorption on the blue wing of the H I Lyman alpha line, near the expected position of Deuterium. However, we find that Deuterium cannot explain all of the excess absorption, and hence there must be contamination by additional absorption, probably H I. This extra H I can account for most or all of the absorption at the D position, and hence D/H = 0 is allowed. We find an upper limit of D/H < 6.7 times 10^-5 in this system, consistent with the value of D/H ~ 3.4 times 10^-5 deduced towards QSO 1009+2956 and QSO 1937-1009 by Burles and Tytler (1998a, 1998b). This absorption system shows only weak metal line absorption, and we estimate [Si/H] < -2.6 -- indicating that the D/H ratio of the system is likely primordial. All four of the known high redshift absorption line systems simple enough to provide useful limits on D are consistent with D/H = 3.4 +/- 0.25 times 10^-5. Conversely, this QSO provides the third case which is inconsistent with much larger values.Comment: 18 pages, 5 figures, submitted to Ap

Color Lie rings and PBW deformations of skew group algebras

    No full text
We investigate color Lie rings over finite group algebras and their universal enveloping algebras. We exhibit these universal enveloping algebras as PBW deformations of skew group algebras: Every color Lie ring over a finite group algebra with a particular Yetter-Drinfeld structure has universal enveloping algebra that is a quantum Drinfeld orbifold algebra. Conversely, every quantum Drinfeld orbifold algebra of a particular type arising from the action of an abelian group is the universal enveloping algebra of some color Lie ring over the group algebra. One consequence is that these quantum Drinfeld orbifold algebras are braided Hopf algebras

The 1000 GeV gamma rays from ms pulsars

    Get PDF
The detection of 1000 GeV gamma-rays with the characteristic 6.1 ms periodicity of the radio pulsar PSR 1953 +29 is reported. This result, significant at the 5.4 beta level, provides the first direct evidence for the association of the 6 ms radio pulsar PSR1953+29 with the gamma-ray source 2CG065+0. Extensive observations of the 1.5 ms pulsar PSR 1937 are also reported

The 1000 GeV gamma ray emission from radio pulsars

    Get PDF
Radio pulsars have concentrated on long observations of the Crab pulsar and showed that it emits short intense bursts and a persistent weak periodic flux at gamma-ray energies 1000 GeV. It was shown that the light curve of the persistent emission was dominated by a single peak, coincident with the position of the radio and low energy gamma-ray main pulse. The results of a more detailed analysis of the structure of this main pulse are reported following an appraisal of the timing system. It is shown that at energies 1000 GeV the duration of the main pulse is not greater than 0.4 ms, which is less than that seen at all frequencies other than radio. Flux limits for the emission of 1000 GeV gamma-rays by seven other radio pulsars are reporte
