Electromechanical tuning of vertically-coupled photonic crystal nanobeams
We present the design, the fabrication and the characterization of a tunable
one-dimensional (1D) photonic crystal cavity (PCC) etched on two
vertically-coupled GaAs nanobeams. A novel fabrication method which prevents
their adhesion under capillary forces is introduced. We discuss a design to
increase the flexibility of the structure and we demonstrate a large reversible
and controllable electromechanical wavelength tuning (> 15 nm) of the cavity

The tensor part of the Skyrme energy density functional. I. Spherical nuclei
We perform a systematic study of the impact of the J^2 tensor term in the
Skyrme energy functional on properties of spherical nuclei. In the Skyrme
energy functional, the tensor terms originate both from zero-range central and
tensor forces. We build a set of 36 parameterizations, which covers a wide
range of the parameter space of the isoscalar and isovector tensor term
coupling constants, with a fit protocol very similar to that of the successful
SLy parameterizations. We analyze the impact of the tensor terms on a large
variety of observables in spherical mean-field calculations, such as the
spin-orbit splittings and single-particle spectra of doubly-magic nuclei, the
evolution of spin-orbit splittings along chains of semi-magic nuclei, mass
residuals of spherical nuclei, and known anomalies of charge radii. Our main
conclusion is that the currently used central and spin-orbit parts of the
Skyrme energy density functional are not flexible enough to allow for the

Novel pathogen-specific primers for the detection of Agrobacterium vitis and Agrobacterium tumefaciens
To detect agrobacteria causing crown gall disease of grapevine novel virulence and oncogene specific primer combinations were tested on Agrobacterium vitis and Agrobacterium tumefaciens strains including most opine types found in grapevines. Reproducible detection of all the tested pathogens in a single reaction was only possible with multiplex PCR using mixtures of virulence-, or oncogene specific primers. A primer combination including pehA, virF and virD2 gene-specific oligonucleotides amplified the corresponding fragments from nearly all strains included and distinguished A. vitis and A. tumefaciens strains carrying octopine or nopaline pTis and A. vitis vitopine strains. A second set of primers designed to amplify the T-DNA auxin genes iaaH and iaaM detected all of the tested pathogens and, as in the case of virF-, and virD2-specific primers, A. vitis vitopine strains formed also a distinct group. These data were further confirmed using opine synthase-, or 6b gene-specific primers that also allowed the identification and distinction of octopine and nopaline as well as vitopine isolates of A. vitis. Thus, a wide range of agrobacteria occurring on grapevine were detected and identified. On the other hand, our results confirm that vitopine-type agrobacteria form a distinct group within the genus Agrobacterium.
Retention of Antimicrobial Activity in Plaque and Saliva following Mouthrinse Use in vivo
The aim of this study was to determine the contribution of plaque and saliva towards the prolonged activity, also called substantivity, of three antimicrobial mouthrinses (Listerine (R), Meridol (R), Crest Pro Health (R)), used in combination with a toothpaste (Prodent Coolmint (R)). Volunteers brushed for 4 weeks with a toothpaste without antimicrobial claims, while during the last 2 weeks half of the volunteers used an antimicrobial mouthrinse in addition to brushing. At the end of the experimental period, plaque and saliva samples were collected 6 h after oral hygiene, and bacterial concentrations and viabilities were determined. The contribution of plaque and saliva towards substantivity was assessed by combining plaque obtained after mechanical cleaning only with plaque and saliva obtained after additional use of an antimicrobial rinse. Subsequently, resulting viabilities of the combined plaques were determined. The viabilities of plaque samples after additional rinsing with mouthrinses were lower than of plaque obtained after mechanical cleaning only, regardless of the rinse involved. Validating child vaccination status in a demographic surveillance system using data from a clinical cohort study: evidence from rural South Africa
<p><b>Background:</b> Childhood vaccination coverage can be estimated from a range of sources. This study aims to validate vaccination data from a longitudinal population-based demographic surveillance system (DSS) against data from a clinical cohort study.</p>
<p><b>Methods:</b> The sample includes 821 children in the Vertical Transmission cohort Study (VTS), who were born between December 2001 and April 2005, and were matched to the Africa Centre DSS, in northern KwaZulu-Natal. Vaccination information in the surveillance was collected retrospectively, using standardized questionnaires during bi-annual household visits, when the child was 12 to 23 months of age. DSS vaccination information was based on extraction from a vaccination card or, if the card was not available, on maternal recall. In the VTS, vaccination data was collected at scheduled maternal and child clinic visits when a study nurse administered child vaccinations. We estimated the sensitivity of the surveillance in detecting vaccinations conducted as part of the VTS during these clinic visits.</p>
<p><b>Results:</b> Vaccination data in matched children in the DSS was based on the vaccination card in about two-thirds of the cases and on maternal recall in about one-third. The sensitivity of the vaccination variables in the surveillance was high for all vaccines based on either information from a South African Road-to-Health (RTH) card (0.94-0.97) or maternal recall (0.94-0.98). Addition of maternal recall to the RTH card information had little effect on the sensitivity of the surveillance variable (0.95-0.97). The estimates of sensitivity did not vary significantly, when we stratified the analyses by maternal antenatal HIV status. Addition of maternal recall of vaccination status of the child to the RTH card information significantly increased the proportion of children known to be vaccinated across all vaccines in the DSS.</p>
<p><b>Conclusion:</b> Maternal recall performs well in identifying vaccinated children aged 12-23 months (both in HIV-infected and HIV-uninfected mothers), with sensitivity similar to information extracted from vaccination cards. Information based on both maternal recall and vaccination cards should be used if the aim is to use surveillance data to identify children who received a vaccination.</p>
The KATRIN Pre-Spectrometer at reduced Filter Energy
The KArlsruhe TRItium Neutrino experiment, KATRIN, will determine the mass of
the electron neutrino with a sensitivity of 0.2 eV (90% C.L.) via a measurement
of the beta-spectrum of gaseous tritium near its endpoint of E_0 =18.57 keV. An
ultra-low background of about b = 10 mHz is among the requirements to reach
this sensitivity. In the KATRIN main beam-line two spectrometers of MAC-E
filter type are used in a tandem configuration. This setup, however, produces a
Penning trap which could lead to increased background. We have performed test
measurements showing that the filter energy of the pre-spectrometer can be
reduced by several keV in order to diminish this trap. These measurements were
analyzed with the help of a complex computer simulation, modeling multiple
electron reflections both from the detector and the photoelectric electron
