    Finding and defining the natural automata acting in living plants: Toward the synthetic biology for robotics and informatics in vivo.

    The automata theory is the mathematical study of abstract machines commonly studied in the theoretical computer science and highly interdisciplinary fields that combine the natural sciences and the theoretical computer science. In the present review article, as the chemical and biological basis for natural computing or informatics, some plants, plant cells or plant-derived molecules involved in signaling are listed and classified as natural sequential machines (namely, the Mealy machines or Moore machines) or finite state automata. By defining the actions (states and transition functions) of these natural automata, the similarity between the computational data processing and plant decision-making processes became obvious. Finally, their putative roles as the parts for plant-based computing or robotic systems are discussed

    Red Blood Cells from Individuals with Abdominal Obesity or Metabolic Abnormalities Exhibit Less Deformability upon Entering a Constriction.

    Abdominal obesity and metabolic syndrome (MS) are multifactorial conditions associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease and type II diabetes mellitus. Previous work has demonstrated that the hemorheological profile is altered in patients with abdominal obesity and MS, as evidenced for example by increased whole blood viscosity. To date, however, no studies have examined red blood cell (RBC) deformability of blood from individuals with obesity or metabolic abnormalities under typical physiological flow conditions. In this study, we pumped RBCs through a constriction in a microfluidic device and used high speed video to visualize and track the mechanical behavior of ~8,000 RBCs obtained from either healthy individuals (n = 5) or obese participants with metabolic abnormalities (OMA) (n = 4). We demonstrate that the OMA+ cells stretched on average about 25% less than the healthy controls. Furthermore, we examined the effects of ingesting a high-fat meal on RBC mechanical dynamics, and found that the postprandial period has only a weak effect on the stretching dynamics exhibited by OMA+ cells. The results suggest that chronic rigidification of RBCs plays a key role in the increased blood pressure and increased whole blood viscosity observed in OMA individuals and was independent of an acute response triggered by consumption of a high-fat meal

    A reverse engineering approach to measure the deformations of a sailing yacht

    In this work, a multidisciplinary experience, aimed to study the permanent deformations of the hull of a regatta sailing yacht is described. In particular, a procedure to compare two different surfaces of the hull of a small sailing yacht, designed and manufactured at the University of Palermo, has been developed. The first one represents the original CAD model while the second one has been obtained by means of a reverse engineering approach. The reverse engineering process was performed through an automatic close-range photogrammetry survey, that has allowed to obtain very accurate measures of the hull, and a 3D modelling step by the well-known 3D computer graphics software Rhinoceros. The reverse engineering model was checked through two different procedures implemented by the graphical algorithm editor Grasshopper. The first procedure has allowed to compare the photogrammetric measurements with the rebuilt surface, in order to verify if the reverse engineering process has led to reliable results. The second has been implement to measure the deviations between the original CAD model and the rebuilt surface of the hull. This procedure has given the possibility to highlight any permanent deformation of the hull due to errors during the production phase or to excessive loads during its use. The obtained results have demonstrated that the developed procedure is very efficient and able to give detailed information on the deviation values of the two compared surfaces

A new semitrailer in composite material has been designed, using a methodical redesign approach and an optimisation process.     Association between serum Mg2+ concentrations and cardiovascular organ damage in a cohort of adult subjects

    Magnesium (Mg2+) levels are associated with insulin resistance, hypertension, atherosclerosis, and type 2 diabetes (T2DM). We evaluated the clinical utility of physiological Mg2+ in assessing subclinical cardiovascular organ damage including increased carotid artery intima-media thickness (c-IMT) and left ventricular mass index (LVMI) in a cohort of well-characterized adult non-diabetic individuals. Age-and gender-adjusted correlations between Mg2+ and metabolic parameters showed that Mg2+ circulating levels were correlated negatively with body mass index (BMI), fasting glucose, and 2h-oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) glucose. Similarly, Mg2+ levels were significantly and negatively related to c-IMT and LVMI. A multivariate regression analysis revealed that age (β = 0.440; p < 0.0001), BMI (β = 0.225; p < 0.0001), and Mg2+ concentration (β = −0.122; p < 0.01) were independently associated with c-IMT. Age (β = 0.244; p = 0.012), Mg2+ (β = −0.177; p = 0.019), and diastolic blood pressure (β = 0.184; p = 0.038) were significantly associated with LVMI in women, while age (β = 0.211; p = 0.019), Mg2+ (β = −0.171; p = 0.038) and the homeostasis model assessment index of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) (β = −0.211; p = 0.041) were the sole variables associated with LVMI in men. In conclusion, our data support the hypothesis that the assessment of Mg2+ as part of the initial work-up might help unravel the presence of subclinical organ damage in subjects at increased risk of cardiovascular complications

    Exploring the selective gray matter profile of autism spectrum disorder through Bayes Factor Modeling

    INTRODUCTION: Despite decades of brain MRI research demonstrating atypical neuroanatomical substrate in patients with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), it remains unclear whether and to what extent disorder-selective neuroanatomical abnormalities occur in this spectrum. This, and the fact that multiple brain disorders report a common neuroanatomical substrate, makes transference and the application of neuroimaging findings into the clinical setting an open challenge. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the selective neuroanatomical alteration profile of the ASD brain, we employed a meta-analytic, data-driven, and reverse inference-based approach (i.e.; Bayes fACtor mOdeliNg). METHODS: Eligible voxel-based morphometry data were extracted by a standardized search on BrainMap and MEDLINE databases (849 published experiments, 131 brain disorders, 22747 clinical subjects, 16572 x-y-z coordinates). Two distinct datasets were generated: the ASD dataset, composed of ASD-related data; and the non-ASD dataset, composed of all other clinical conditions data. Starting from the two unthresholded activation likelihood estimation (ALE) maps, the calculus of the Bayes fACtor mOdeliNg was performed. This allowed us to obtain posterior probability distributions on the evidence of brain alteration specificity in ASD. RESULTS: We revealed both cortical and cerebellar areas of neuroanatomical alteration selectivity in ASD. Eight clusters showed a selectivity value ≥ 90%, namely the bilateral precuneus, the right inferior occipital gyrus, left lobule IX, left Crus II, right Crus I, and the right lobule VIIIA (Fig. 1). CONCLUSIONS: The identification of this neuroanatomical pattern provides new insights into the complex pathophysiology of ASD, opening attractive prospects for future neuroimaging-based interventions.     Augmenting Cyber Defender Performance and Workload through Sonified Displays

    AbstractMilitary cyber operations occur in a cognitively intense and stressful environment, and consequently, operator burnout is relatively high when compared to other operational environments. There is a distinct need for new and innovative ways to augment operator capabilities, increase performance, manage workload, and decrease stress in cyber. In this study, we assessed how a sonified display could address these requirements. Sonification has been demonstrated to be a useful method for presenting temporal data in multiple domains. Participants in the experiment were tasked with detecting evidence of a cyber attack in a simulated task environment modeled after “Wireshark,” a popular packet analyzer program. As they completed the task, participants either did or did not have access to a redundant sonified display that provided an auditory representation of the textual data presented in Wireshark. We expected that the sonified display would improve operator performance and reduce workload and stress. However, our results did not support those expectations – access to the sonification did not affect performance, workload, or stress. Our findings highlight the need for continued research into effective methods for augmenting cyber operator capabilities
