The role of urban boundary layer investigated with high-resolution models and ground-based observations in Rome area: a step towards understanding parameterization potentialities
Abstract. The urban forcing on thermodynamical conditions can greatly influence the local evolution of the atmospheric boundary layer. Heat stored in an urban environment can produce noteworthy mesoscale perturbations of the lower atmosphere. The new generation of high-resolution numerical weather prediction models (NWP) is nowadays often applied also to urban areas. An accurate representation of cities is key role because of the cities' influence on wind, temperature and water vapor content of the planetary boundary layer (PBL). The Advanced Weather Research and Forecasting model WRF (ARW) has been used to reproduce the circulation in the urban area of Rome. A sensitivity study is performed using different PBL and surface schemes. The significant role of the surface forcing in the PBL evolution has been investigated by comparing model results with observations coming from many instruments (lidar, sodar, sonic anemometer and surface stations). The impact of different urban canopy models (UCMs) on the forecast has also been investigated. One meteorological event will be presented, chosen as statistically relevant for the area of interest. The WRF-ARW model shows a tendency to overestimate the vertical transport of horizontal momentum from upper levels to low atmosphere if strong large-scale forcing occurs. This overestimation is partially corrected by a local PBL scheme coupled with an advanced UCM. Moreover, a general underestimation of vertical motions has been verified
Autosomal-dominant myopia associated to a novel P4HA2 missense variant and defective collagen hydroxylation
We recently described a complex multisystem syndrome in which mild-moderate myopia segregated as an independent trait. A plethora of genes has been related to sporadic and familial myopia. More recently, in Chinese patients severe myopia (MYP25, OMIM:617238) has been linked to mutations in P4HA2 gene. Seven family members complaining of reduced distance vision especially at dusk underwent complete ophthalmological examination. Whole-exome sequencing was performed to identify the gene responsible for myopia in the pedigree. Moderate myopia was diagnosed in the family which was associated to the novel missense variant c.1147A > G p.(Lys383Glu) in the prolyl 4-hydroxylase,alpha-polypeptide 2 (P4HA2) gene, which catalyzes the formation of 4-hydroxyproline residues in the collagen strands. In vitro studies demonstrated P4HA2 mRNA and protein reduced expression level as well as decreased collagen hydroxylation and deposition in mutated fibroblast primary cultures compared to healthy cell lines. This study suggests that P4HA2 mutations may lead to myopic axial elongation of eyeball as a consequence of quantitative and structural alterations of collagen. This is the first confirmatory study which associates a novel dominant missense variant in P4HA2 with myopia in Caucasian patients. Neuroradiological findings in Alagille syndrome
Alagille syndrome (ALGS) is a multisystemic disease caused by mutations in genes of Notch pathway, which regulates embryonic cell differentiation and angiogenesis. Clinically, ALGS is characterized by cholestasis, cardiac defects, characteristic facial features, skeletal and ophthalmologic abnormalities. The aim of this review is to illustrate neuroradiological findings in ALGS, which are less well-known and prevalent, including cerebrovascular anomalies (such as aneurysms, dolichoectasia, Moyamoya syndrome and venous peculiarities), Chiari 1 malformation, craniosynostosis, intracranial hypertension, and vertebral anomalies (namely butterfly vertebra, hemivertebra, and craniocervical junction anomalies). A long-term time series of global and diffuse photosynthetically active radiation in the Mediterranean: interannual variability and cloud effects
Abstract. Measurements of global and diffuse photosynthetically active
radiation (PAR) have been carried out on the island of Lampedusa, in the
central Mediterranean Sea, since 2002. PAR is derived from observations made
with multi-filter rotating shadowband radiometers (MFRSRs) by comparison with
a freshly calibrated PAR sensor and by relying on the on-site Langley plots.
In this way, a long-term calibrated record covering the period 2002–2016 is
obtained and is presented in this work. The monthly mean global PAR peaks in June, with about 160 W m−2, while
the diffuse PAR reaches 60 W m−2 in spring or summer. The global PAR
displays a clear annual cycle with a semi amplitude of about 52 W m−2.
The diffuse PAR annual cycle has a semi amplitude of about 12 W m−2. A simple method to retrieve the cloud-free PAR global and diffuse irradiances
in days characterized by partly cloudy conditions has been implemented and
applied to the dataset. This method allows retrieval of the cloud-free
evolution of PAR and calculation of the cloud radiative effect, CRE, for
downwelling PAR. The cloud-free monthly mean global PAR reaches
175 W m−2 in summer, while the diffuse PAR peaks at about
40 W m−2. The cloud radiative effect, CRE, on global and diffuse PAR is calculated as
the difference between all-sky and cloud-free measurements. The annual
average CRE is about −14.7 W m−2 for the global PAR and
+8.1 W m−2 for the diffuse PAR. The smallest CRE is observed in
July, due to the high cloud-free condition frequency. Maxima (negative for
the global, and positive for the diffuse component) occur in March–April and
in October, due to the combination of elevated PAR irradiances and high
occurrence of cloudy conditions. Summer clouds appear to be characterized by
a low frequency of occurrence, low altitude, and low optical thickness,
possibly linked to the peculiar marine boundary layer structure. These
properties also contribute to produce small radiative effects on PAR in
summer. The cloud radiative effect has been deseasonalized to remove the influence
of annual irradiance variations. The monthly mean normalized CRE for global
PAR can be well represented by a multi-linear regression with respect to
monthly cloud fraction, cloud top pressure, and cloud optical thickness, as
determined from satellite MODIS observations. The behaviour of the normalized
CRE for diffuse PAR can not be satisfactorily described by a simple
multi-linear model with respect to the cloud properties, due to its non-linear dependency, in particular on the cloud optical depth. The analysis
suggests that about 77 % of the global PAR interannual variability may be

First study on the peptidergic innervation of the brain superior sagittal sinus in humans.
The superior sagittal sinus (SSS) of the mammalian brain is a pain-sensitive intracranial vessel thought to play a role in the pathogenesis of migraine headaches. Here, we aimed to investigate the presence and the potential co-localization of some neurotransmitters in the human SSS. Immunohistochemical and double-labeling immunofluorescence analyses were applied to paraformaldehyde-fixed, paraffin-embedded, coronal sections of the SSS. Protein extraction and Western blotting technique were performed on the same material to confirm the morphological data. Our results showed nerve fibers clustered mainly in large bundles tracking parallel to the longitudinal axis of the sinus, close in proximity to the vascular endothelium. Smaller fascicles of fibers encircled the vascular lumen in a spiral fashion, extending through the subendothelial connective tissue. Isolated nerve fibers were observed around the openings of bridging veins in the sinus or around small vessels extending into the perisinusal dura. The neurotransmitters calcitonin gene related peptide (CGRP), substance P (SP), neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS), vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP), tyrosine hydroxylase (TH), and neuropeptide Y (NPY) were found in parietal nerve structures, distributed all along the length of the SSS. Overall, CGRP- and TH-containing nerve fibers were the most abundant. Neurotransmitters co-localized in the same fibers in the following pairs: CGRP/SP, CGRP/NOS, CGRP/VIP, and TH/NPY. Western blotting analysis confirmed the presence of such neurosubstances in the SSS wall. Overall our data provide the first evidence of the presence and co-localization of critical neurotransmitters in the SSS of the human brain, thus contributing to a better understanding of the sinus functional role
Spectrally resolved observations of atmospheric emitted radiance in the H2O rotation band

Vapor Radiation, an observational programme, which aims at
developing a database of spectrally resolved far infrared
observations, in atmospheric dry conditions, in order to
validate radiative transfer models and test the quality of water
vapor continuum and line parameters. The project provides
the very first set of far-infrared spectral downwelling
radiance measurements, in dry atmospheric conditions,
which are complemented with Raman Lidar-derived
temperature and water vapor profiles
Retrieval of foreign-broadened water vapor continuum coefficients from emitted spectral radiance in the H2O rotational band from 240 to 590 cm −1
The paper presents a novel methodology to retrieve the foreign-broadened water vapor continuum absorption coefficients in the
spectral range 240 to 590 cm−1 and is the first estimation of the continuum coefficient at wave numbers smaller than 400 cm−1 under atmospheric conditions. The derivation has been accomplished by processing a suitable
set of atmospheric emitted spectral radiance observations obtained during the March 2007 Alps campaign of the ECOWAR project (Earth COoling by WAter vapor Radiation). It is shown that, in the range 450 to 600 cm−1, our findings are in good agreement with the widely used Mlawer, Tobin-Clough, Kneizys-Davies (MT_CKD) continuum. In celebrating the 70th birthday of Giorgio Fiocco we recall that his scientific production includes some pioneering work in a number of fi elds where he set important milestones.
