    Objectively Measured Physical Activity and the Subsequent Risk of Incident Dysglycemia: The Australian Diabetes, Obesity and Lifestyle Study (AusDiab)

    OBJECTIVE - To investigate pedometer-measured physical activity (PA) in 2000 and change in PA over 5 years with subsequent risk of dysglycemia by 2005. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS - This prospective cohort study in Tasmania, Australia, analyzed 458 adults with normal glucose tolerance and a mean (SD) age of 49.7 (12.1) years in 2000. Variables assessed in 2000 and 2005 included PA, by pedometer and questionnaire, nutrient intake, and other lifestyle factors. Incident dysglycemia was defined as the development of impaired fasting glucose or impaired glucose tolerance revealed by oral glucose tolerance testing in 2005, without type 2 diabetes. RESULTS - Incident dysglycemia developed in 26 participants during the 5-year period. Higher daily steps in 2000 were independently associated with a lower 5-year risk of incident dysglycemia (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] 0.87 [95% CI 0.77-0.97] per 1,000-step increment). Higher daily steps in 2005, after controlling for baseline steps in 2000 (thus reflecting change in steps over 5 years), were not associated with incident dysglycemia (AOR 1.02 [0.92-1.14]). Higher daily steps in 2000 were also associated with lower fasting blood glucose, but not 2-h plasma glucose by 2005. Further adjustment for BMI or waist circumference did not remove these associations. CONCLUSIONS - Among community-dwelling adults, a higher rate of daily steps is associated with a reduced risk of incident dysglycemia. This effect appears to be not fully mediated through reduced adiposity

    Effects of sedentary behaviour interventions on biomarkers of cardiometabolic risk in adults: systematic review with meta-analyses.

    CONTEXT/PURPOSE: Observational and acute laboratory intervention research has shown that excessive sedentary time is associated adversely with cardiometabolic biomarkers. This systematic review with meta-analyses synthesises results from free living interventions targeting reductions in sedentary behaviour alone or combined with increases in physical activity. METHODS: Six electronic databases were searched up to August 2019 for sedentary behaviour interventions in adults lasting for ≥7 days publishing cardiometabolic biomarker outcomes covering body anthropometry, blood pressure, glucose and lipid metabolism, and inflammation (54 studies). The pooled effectiveness of intervention net of control on 15 biomarker outcomes was evaluated using random effects meta-analyses in the studies with control groups not providing other relevant interventions (33 studies; 6-25 interventions analysed). RESULTS: Interventions between 2 weeks and 0.05) were also small, and beneficial in direction except for fat-free mass (≈ 0.0 kg). Heterogeneity ranged widely (I2=0.0-72.9). CONCLUSIONS: Our review of interventions targeting sedentary behaviour reductions alone, or combined with increases in physical activity, found evidence of effectiveness for improving some cardiometabolic risk biomarkers to a small degree. There was insufficient evidence to evaluate inflammation or vascular function. Key limitations to the underlying evidence base include a paucity of high-quality studies, interventions lasting for ≥12 months, sensitive biomarkers and clinical study populations (eg, type 2 diabetes).     Effects of dietary eicosapentaenoic acid on growth, survival, pigmentation and fatty acid composition in Senegal sole (Solea senegalensis) larvae during the Artemia feeding period

    We examined the effect of dietary eicosapentaenoic acid (20:5n-3, EPA) on growth, survival, pigmentation and fatty acid composition of Senegal sole larvae using a dose-response design. From 3 to 40 days post hatch (dph), larvae were fed live food that had been enriched using one of four experimental emulsions containing graduated concentrations of EPA and constant docosahexaenoic acid (22:6n-3, DHA) and arachidonic acid (20:4n-6, ARA). Proportions of EPA in the enriched Artemia nauplii were described as “nil” (EPA-N, 0.5% total fatty acids, TFA), “low” (EPA-L, 10.7% TFA), “medium” (EPA-M, 20.3% TFA) or “high” (EPA-H, 29.5% TFA). Significant differences among dietary treatments in larval length were observed at 25, 30 and 40 dph, and in dry weight at 30 and 40 dph, although no significant correlation could be found between dietary EPA content and growth. The stage of eye migration at 17 and 25 dph was significantly affected by dietary levels of EPA. Significantly lower survival was observed in fish fed EPA-H enriched nauplii. A significantly lower percentage of fish fed EPA-N (82.7%) and EPA-L (82.9%) diets were normally pigmented compared to the fish fed EPA-M (98.1%) and EPA-H (99.4%) enriched nauplii. Tissue fatty acid concentrations reflected the corresponding dietary composition. Arachidonic and docosahexaenoic acid levels in all the tissues examined were inversely related to dietary EPA. There was an increase in the proportion of docosapentaenoic acid (22:5n-3, DPA) in the tissues relative to the diet, which is indicative of chain elongation of EPA. This work concluded that Senegal sole larvae have a very low EPA requirement during the live feeding period

    Chemical Pressure and Physical Pressure in BaFe_2(As_{1-x}P_{x})_2

    Measurements of the superconducting transition temperature, T_c, under hydrostatic pressure via bulk AC susceptibility were carried out on several concentrations of phosphorous substitution in BaFe_2(As_{1-x}P_x)_2. The pressure dependence of unsubstituted BaFe_2As_2, phosphorous concentration dependence of BaFe_2(As_{1-x}P_x)_2, as well as the pressure dependence of BaFe_2(As_{1-x}P_x)_2 all point towards an identical maximum T_c of 31 K. This demonstrates that phosphorous substitution and physical pressure result in similar superconducting phase diagrams, and that phosphorous substitution does not induce substantial impurity scattering.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, to be published in Journal of the Physical Society of Japa

    Current and projected global distribution of Phytophthora cinnamomi, one of the world's worst plant pathogens

    Globally, Phytophthora cinnamomi is listed as one of the 100 worst invasive alien species and active management is required to reduce impact and prevent spread in both horticulture and natural ecosystems. Conversely, there are regions thought to be suitable for the pathogen where no disease is observed. We developed a climex model for the global distribution of P. cinnamomi based on the pathogen's response to temperature and moisture and by incorporating extensive empirical evidence on the presence and absence of the pathogen. The climex model captured areas of climatic suitability where P. cinnamomi occurs that is congruent with all available records. The model was validated by the collection of soil samples from asymptomatic vegetation in areas projected to be suitable by the model for which there were few records. DNA was extracted, and the presence or absence of P. cinnamomi was determined by high-throughput sequencing (HTS). While not detected using traditional isolation methods, HTS detected P. cinnamomi at higher elevations in eastern Australia and central Tasmania as projected by the climex model. Further support for the climex model was obtained using the large data set from south-west Australia where the proportion of positive records in an area is related to the Ecoclimatic Index value for the same area. We provide for the first time a comprehensive global map of the current P. cinnamomi distribution, an improved climex model of the distribution, and a projection to 2080 of the distribution with predicted climate change. This information provides the basis for more detailed regional-scale modelling and supports risk assessment for governments to plan management of this important soil-borne plant pathogen

    Magnetic Field and Pressure Phase Diagrams of Uranium Heavy-Fermion Compound U2_2Zn17_{17}

    We have performed magnetization measurements at high magnetic fields of up to 53 T on single crystals of a uranium heavy-fermion compound U2_2Zn17_{17} grown by the Bridgman method. In the antiferromagnetic state below the N\'{e}el temperature TNT_{\rm N} = 9.7 K, a metamagnetic transition is found at HcH_c \simeq 32 T for the field along the [112ˉ\bar{2}0] direction (aa-axis). The magnetic phase diagram for the field along the [112ˉ\bar{2}0] direction is given. The magnetization curve shows a nonlinear increase at HmH_m \simeq 35 T in the paramagnetic state above TNT_{\rm N} up to a characteristic temperature TχmaxT_{{\chi}{\rm max}} where the magnetic susceptibility or electrical resistivity shows a maximum value. This metamagnetic behavior of the magnetization at HmH_m is discussed in comparison with the metamagnetic magnetism of the heavy-fermion superconductors UPt3_3, URu2_2Si2_2, and UPd2_2Al3_3. We have also carried out high-pressure resistivity measurement on U2_2Zn17_{17} using a diamond anvil cell up to 8.7 GPa. Noble gas argon was used as a pressure-transmitting medium to ensure a good hydrostatic environment. The N\'{e}el temperature TNT_{\rm N} is almost pressure-independent up to 4.7 GPa and starts to increase in the higher-pressure region. The pressure dependences of the coefficient of the T2T^2 term in the electrical resistivity AA, the antiferromagnetic gap Δ\Delta, and the characteristic temperature TρmaxT_{{\rho}{\rm max}} are discussed. It is found that the effect of pressure on the electronic states in U2_2Zn17_{17} is weak compared with those in the other heavy fermion compounds
