Can board environmental orientation improve U.S. firms' carbon performance? The mediating role of carbon strategy

    Get PDF
Overwhelming evidence from prior research suggests a positive association between corporate board characteristics and carbon performance; however, very little is known about the mechanisms linking the two variables. This study attempts to fill this gap by developing and empirically testing a conceptual model that highlights the role of carbon strategy in the relationship between board environmental orientation (BEO) and carbon performance. We argue that BEO can directly and indirectly influence carbon performance through carbon strategy. Using structural equation modelling to analyse data consisting of 2,301 US firm-year observations over the 2005-2015 period, we find that the greater the BEO is, the better its carbon performance (i.e., lower greenhouse gas emissions). The results also provide evidence of the mediating effect of carbon strategy on the relationship between BEO and carbon performance. Splitting the sample into high and low carbon-intensive industries shows a partial mediation effect in high carbon-intensive industries and a full mediation effect in low carbon-intensive industries. The findings of the study and its implications for scholars, policy makers, managers, investors and environmentalists are discussed

A Global Forum on Ultramafic Ecosystems: From Ultramafic Ecology to Rehabilitation of Degraded Environments

The 9th International Conference on Serpentine Ecology (ICSE) was held in Tirana and Pogradec (Albania) from June 5 to 9, 2017. More than 100 delegates from 29 countries around the world gathered to present their research on recent advances in: (i) ultramafic soils, (ii) biogeochemistry, (iii) diversity of ultramafic flora, microflora and fauna, (iv) ecophysiology of ultramafic-adapted organisms, (v) interactions between ultramafic organisms and their ecology, (vi) nature rehabilitation of degraded ultramafic environments (resulting from mining activities), and (vii) the production of bio-based metals through agromining technology. Additionally, the ICSE featured the first symposium on ultramafic aquatic ecology and ecotoxicology. Albania has one of the most diverse ultramafic floras in Europe. During the conference delegates visited some of the most emblematic ultramafic sites in Albania as well as the first agromining field trial in Europe. Here, we present the major topics and provide some highlights of the 25 contributions in this Special Issue (Vol. 33 no.3 and 4)

Motor vehicle has been known as a source of air pollution. The exhaust gas from the vehicle can impact the environmental and the human health. The four wheel vehicle or car is the biggest contributor of CO and NOx. Concentration of emisions is effected from the gasoline that used. The others thing that can affect the emmisions are the mileage and the ages of the engine. The method that used is the direct method that testing the vehicle directly and also an interview to the owner of the car. From the results mileage and ages of the engine was positively related to the concentration of CO emission, where the further the distance and the older the age of engine, the more it will increase its CO concentration, with a correlation value of 89.40% and 99.5% perspectively. While mileage and ages of engine negatively related to the concentration of NOx emissions, where the farther the distance, and the older the age of engine, the more it will decrease its NOx emission concentrations, with correlation value of 88.6% and 93.8% perspectively

This paper review the Decision Number 12/Pdt.Sus-PHI/2020/PN.Mnd dated 24th August 2020 due to the increasing number of problems problems related to the work relationship between workers and employers. The method in this writing is a normative legal research using a statutory and case approach. On the one hand, work is a necessity to be able to continue life, but on the one hand the Employer does not pay attention to the provisions in the applicable Law. Employment relations for the employer and the recipient of the work are of vital importance to protect the rights and obligations of both parties. The working relationship that occurs between the Worker and the Employer is not only shown through the Work Agreement, but also must be proven by other legality which does not violate the prevailing laws / regulations. As the judge's consideration at the Manado District Court in deciding case Number 12 / Pdt.Sus-PHI / 2020 / PN.Mnd in which the Judge in the case viewed the working relationship broadly and saw one side of the suitability of the employer as an institution that has legality that does not conflict with Constitution.  Keywords: Work relationship, Employment, Work Agreement, Work Terminatio

The level of creativity in English writing among Jordanian secondary school students

The aim of this study is to explore the level of creativity in English writing among Jordanian secondary school students. The researchers have used a random sample of 100 students of secondary school students in Irbid and Amman cities in Jordan.Adapetd Torrance Test of Creative Thinking (TTCT) was used to measure their creativity in English writing.TTCT test is thought to be the best test to evaluate the creativity dimensions of students in writing.TTCT assesses fluency or the number of ideas; flexibility, the variety of categories in the answers; and originality, which consists in considering innovative answers, neither familiar nor inappropriate. The results of the study showed that the respondents fall in the moderate level of creativity

Revisiting the anatomy of the cephalic vein, its origin, course and possible clinical correlations in relation to the anatomical snuffbox among Jordanian

Background: The cephalic vein is one of the most distinguished superficial veins of the upper limb. Its clinical value lies in venous access. There is little known about the variation of its formation in relation to the anatomical snuffbox. Hence, anatomical variants in the origin of the cephalic vein are important in clinical practice. Subsequently, this study was designed to examine the variation of the cephalic vein formation in relation to the anatomical snuffbox. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study of 438 subjects (722 hands), was prepared to study the cephalic vein among Jordanian students and staff of one of the major governmental Medical College in Jordan, by using infrared illumination system. The obtained data was analysed according to; gender, sidedness, and handedness. Results: Four sites for the formation of the cephalic vein in relation to the anatomical snuffbox were found. There was a significant relation between gender and sidedness, and the sites of formation of the cephalic vein (p < 0.0001 and p = 0.048, respectively). Conclusions: For the first time this study identified different sites for the formation of the cephalic vein in relation to the anatomical snuffbox. However, regardless of its sites of formation, the cephalic vein was running in 98% of the examined hands in the anatomical snuffbox

This article summarizes the protonation and complexation equilibrium constants of nicotinic acid (NA) using different analytical techniques and software’s. Additionally, Raman, IR, and NMR spectra were done for nicotinic acid ligand and for its solid complexes with copper(II), cobalt(II) and nickel(II) metal ions.               KEY WORDS: Nicotinic acid, Potentiometry, Spectrometry, Equilibrium constants Bull.
