    Directional correlations in quantum walks with two particles

    Quantum walks on a line with a single particle possess a classical analogue. Involving more walkers opens up the possibility of studying collective quantum effects, such as many-particle correlations. In this context, entangled initial states and the indistinguishability of the particles play a role. We consider the directional correlations between two particles performing a quantum walk on a line. For non-interacting particles, we find analytic asymptotic expressions and give the limits of directional correlations. We show that by introducing delta-interaction between the particles, one can exceed the limits for non-interacting particles

    Exploring Outliers in Crowdsourced Ranking for QoE

    Outlier detection is a crucial part of robust evaluation for crowdsourceable assessment of Quality of Experience (QoE) and has attracted much attention in recent years. In this paper, we propose some simple and fast algorithms for outlier detection and robust QoE evaluation based on the nonconvex optimization principle. Several iterative procedures are designed with or without knowing the number of outliers in samples. Theoretical analysis is given to show that such procedures can reach statistically good estimates under mild conditions. Finally, experimental results with simulated and real-world crowdsourcing datasets show that the proposed algorithms could produce similar performance to Huber-LASSO approach in robust ranking, yet with nearly 8 or 90 times speed-up, without or with a prior knowledge on the sparsity size of outliers, respectively. Therefore the proposed methodology provides us a set of helpful tools for robust QoE evaluation with crowdsourcing data.Comment: accepted by ACM Multimedia 2017 (Oral presentation). arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1407.763

    Large-uncertainty intelligent states for angular momentum and angle

    The equality in the uncertainty principle for linear momentum and position is obtained for states which also minimize the uncertainty product. However, in the uncertainty relation for angular momentum and angular position both sides of the inequality are state dependent and therefore the intelligent states, which satisfy the equality, do not necessarily give a minimum for the uncertainty product. In this paper, we highlight the difference between intelligent states and minimum uncertainty states by investigating a class of intelligent states which obey the equality in the angular uncertainty relation while having an arbitrarily large uncertainty product. To develop an understanding for the uncertainties of angle and angular momentum for the large-uncertainty intelligent states we compare exact solutions with analytical approximations in two limiting cases.Comment: 20 pages, 9 figures, submitted to J.     Information flow in a kinetic ising model peaks in the disordered phase

    There is growing evidence that for a range of dynamical systems featuring complex interactions between large ensembles of interacting elements, mutual information peaks at order-disorder phase transitions. We conjecture that, by contrast, information flow in such systems will generally peak strictly on the disordered side of a phase transition. This conjecture is verified for a ferromagnetic 2D lattice Ising model with Glauber dynamics and a transfer entropy-based measure of systemwide information flow. Implications of the conjecture are considered, in particular, that for a complex dynamical system in the process of transitioning from disordered to ordered dynamics (a mechanism implicated, for example, in financial market crashes and the onset of some types of epileptic seizures); information dynamics may be able to predict an imminent transition

    Entanglement reciprocation between qubits and continuous variables

    We investigate how entanglement can be transferred between qubits and continuous variable (CV) systems. We find that one ebit borne in maximally entangled qubits can be fully transferred to two CV systems which are initially prepared in pure separable Gaussian field with high excitation. We show that it is possible, though not straightforward, to retrieve the entanglement back to qubits from the entangled CV systems. The possibility of deposition of multiple ebits from qubits to the initially unentangled CV systems is also pointed out.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, RevTeX

    Beans with bugs: Covert carnivory and infested seed selection by the red-nosed cuxiú monkey

    Members of the Neotropical primate genus Chiropotes eat large volumes of immature seeds. However, such items are often low in available proteins, and digestion of seeds is further inhibited by tannins. This suggests that overall plant-derived protein intake is relatively low. We examined the presence of insect larvae in partially eaten fruits, compared with intact fruit on trees, and examined fecal pellets for the presence of larvae. We found that red-nosed cuxiú (Chiropotes albinasus) individuals may supplement their limited seed-derived protein intake by ingesting seed-inhabiting insects. Comparison of fruits partially eaten for their seeds with those sampled directly from trees showed that fruits with insect-containing seeds were positively selected in 20 of the 41 C. albinasus diet items tested, suggesting that fruits with infested seeds are actively selected by foraging animals. We found no differences in accessibility to seeds, that is, no differences in husk penetrability between fruits with infested and uninfested seeds excluding the likelihood that insect-infestation results in easier access to the seeds in such fruits. Additionally, none of the C. albinasus fecal samples showed any evidence of living pupae or larvae, indicating that infesting larvae are digested. Our findings raise the possibility that these seed-predating primates might provide net benefits to the plant species they feed on, since they feed from many species of plants and their actions may reduce the populations of seed-infesting insects

    Quantum state transformation by dispersive and absorbing four-port devices

    The recently derived input-output relations for the radiation field at a dispersive and absorbing four-port device [T. Gruner and D.-G. Welsch, Phys. Rev. A 54, 1661 (1996)] are used to derive the unitary transformation that relates the output quantum state to the input quantum state, including radiation and matter and without placing frequency restrictions. It is shown that for each frequency the transformation can be regarded as a well-behaved SU(4) group transformation that can be decomposed into a product of U(2) and SU(2) group transformations. Each of them may be thought of as being realized by a particular lossless four-port device. If for narrow-bandwidth radiation far from the medium resonances the absorption matrix of the four-port device can be disregarded, the well-known SU(2) group transformation for a lossless device is recognized. Explicit formulas for the transformation of Fock-states and coherent states are given.Comment: 24 pages, RevTe
