Measures of implicit cognition for marketing research
Automatic, unconscious processes largely influence human decision-making. However, quantitative market research focuses on eliciting conscious responses. This foregoes the opportunity to investigate - and steer - preceding cognitive processes of decision-making. Three implicit cognitions are of special relevance along consumers' journey: Implicit attention introduces the first perception of a stimulus. Implicit associations can cause attitude and preference formation. Finally, approach tendencies can induce impulse buying. This paper provides a broad methodological overview of these implicit cognition measures to guide future researchers' marketing applications. It presents the methods' theoretical foundations, outlines how they can overcome explicit measures' limitations, and sketches their potential for marketing applications. In addition, the authors describe important research paradigms, alternative experimental setups, and data analyses steps to enable researchers to use implicit measurement tools. The measurement instruments are implemented in a non-profit software (AskYourBrain) and tested in an illustrative study. Key findings are summarized and marketing application suggestions made

Role of disorder when upscaling magnetocaloric Ni-Co-Mn-Al Heusler alloys from thin films to ribbons
Research in functional magnetic materials often employs thin films as model systems for finding new chemical compositions with promising properties. However, the scale-up of thin films towards bulk-like structures is challenging, since the material synthesis conditions are entirely different for thin films and e.g. rapid quenching methods. As one of the consequences, the type and degree of order in thin films and melt-spun ribbons are usually different, leading to different magnetic properties. In this work, using the example of magnetocaloric Ni-Co-Mn-Al melt-spun ribbons and thin films, we show that the excellent functional properties of the films can be reproduced also in ribbons, if an appropriate heat treatment is applied, that installs the right degree of order in the ribbons. We show that some chemical disorder is needed to get a pronounced and sharp martensitic transition. Increasing the order with annealing improves the magnetic properties only up to a point where selected types of disorder survive, which in turn compromise the magnetic properties. These findings allow us to understand the impact of the type and degree of disorder on the functional properties, paving the way for a faster transfer of combinatorial thin film research towards bulk-like materials for magnetic Heusler alloys
Dark Current in Superconducting RF Photoinjectors Measurements and Mitigation
Unwanted beam can cause beam losses and may produce acute or chronic damages of the accelerator. Furthermore it can considerably disturb experiments or increase its back ground. The operation of the superconducting RF photo gun at the ELBE accelerator has delivered the first experimental information on that topic. It was found, that dark current is an important issue, similar to that normal conducting RF photo injectors. In the presentation the measurement of dark current, its properties and analysis will be shown and we will discuss ways for mitigation, especially the construction of a dark current kicke
Electrical properties of ZnO nanorods studied by conductive atomic force microscopy
ZnO nanostructures are promising candidates for the development of novel electronic devices due to their unique electrical and optical properties. Here, we present a complementary electrical characterization of individual upright standing and lying ZnO nanorods using conductive atomic force microscopy (C-AFM). Initially, the electrical properties of the arrays of upright standing ZnO NRs were characterized using two-dimensional current maps. The current maps were recorded simultaneously with the topography acquired by contact mode AFM. Further, C-AFM was utilized to determine the local current-voltage (I-V) characteristics of the top and side facets of individual upright standing NRs. Current-voltage characterization revealed a characteristic similar to that of a Schottky diode. Detailed discussion of the electrical properties is based on local I-V curves, as well as on the 2D current maps recorded from specific areas. © 2011 American Institute of Physics.published_or_final_versio
Heteroepitaxial growth of ferromagnetic MnSb(0001) films on Ge/Si(111) virtual substrates
Molecular beam epitaxial growth of ferromagnetic MnSb(0001) has been achieved on high quality, fully relaxed Ge(111)/Si(111) virtual substrates grown by reduced pressure chemical vapor deposition. The epilayers were characterized using reflection high energy electron diffraction, synchrotron hard X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoemission spectroscopy, and magnetometry. The surface reconstructions, magnetic properties, crystalline quality, and strain relaxation behavior of the MnSb films are similar to those of MnSb grown on GaAs(111). In contrast to GaAs substrates, segregation of substrate atoms through the MnSb film does not occur, and alternative polymorphs of MnSb are absent
Ab initio study of step formation and self-diffusion on Ag(100)
Using the plane wave pseudopotential method we performed density functional
theory calculations on the stability of steps and self-diffusion processes on
Ag(100). Our calculated step formation energies show that the {111}-faceted
step is more stable than the {110}-faceted step. In accordance with
experimental observations we find that the equilibrium island shape should be
octagonal very close to a square with predominately {111}-faceted steps. For
the (100) surface of fcc metals atomic migration proceeds by a hopping or an
exchange process. For Ag(100) we find that adatoms diffuse across flat surfaces
preferentially by hopping. Adatoms approaching the close-packed {111}-faceted
step edges descend from the upper terrace to the lower level by an atomic
exchange with an energy barrier almost identical to the diffusion barrier on
flat surface regions. Thus, within our numerical accuracy (approx +- 0.05 eV)
there is no additional step-edge barrier to descent. This provides a natural
explanation for the experimental observations of the smooth two-dimensional
growth in homoepitaxy of Ag(100). Inspection of experimental results of other
fcc crystal surfaces indicates that our result holds quite generally.Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures. Submitted to Phys. Rev B (October 31, 1996
Fr-TM-align: a new protein structural alignment method based on fragment alignments and the TM-score

This article is available from: http://www.biomedcentral.com/1471-2105/9/531doi:10.1186/1471-2105-9-531Background: Protein tertiary structure comparisons are employed in various fields of
contemporary structural biology. Most structure comparison methods involve generation of an
initial seed alignment, which is extended and/or refined to provide the best structural superposition
between a pair of protein structures as assessed by a structure comparison metric. One such
metric, the TM-score, was recently introduced to provide a combined structure quality measure
of the coordinate root mean square deviation between a pair of structures and coverage. Using the
TM-score, the TM-align structure alignment algorithm was developed that was often found to have
better accuracy and coverage than the most commonly used structural alignment programs;
however, there were a number of situations when this was not true.
Results: To further improve structure alignment quality, the Fr-TM-align algorithm has been
developed where aligned fragment pairs are used to generate the initial seed alignments that are
then refined using dynamic programming to maximize the TM-score. For the assessment of the
structural alignment quality from Fr-TM-align in comparison to other programs such as CE and TMalign,
we examined various alignment quality assessment scores such as PSI and TM-score. The
assessment showed that the structural alignment quality from Fr-TM-align is better in comparison
to both CE and TM-align. On average, the structural alignments generated using Fr-TM-align have
a higher TM-score (~9%) and coverage (~7%) in comparison to those generated by TM-align. Fr-
TM-align uses an exhaustive procedure to generate initial seed alignments. Hence, the algorithm is
computationally more expensive than TM-align.
Conclusion: Fr-TM-align, a new algorithm that employs fragment alignment and assembly provides
better structural alignments in comparison to TM-align. The source code and executables of Fr-
TM-align are freely downloadable at: http://cssb.biology.gatech.edu/skolnick/files/FrTMalign/
Large enhancement of deuteron polarization with frequency modulated microwaves
We report a large enhancement of 1.7 in deuteron polarization up to values of
0.6 due to frequency modulation of the polarizing microwaves in a two liters
polarized target using the method of dynamic nuclear polarization. This target
was used during a deep inelastic polarized muon-deuteron scattering experiment
at CERN. Measurements of the electron paramagnetic resonance absorption spectra
show that frequency modulation gives rise to additional microwave absorption in
the spectral wings. Although these results are not understood theoretically,
they may provide a useful testing ground for the deeper understanding of
dynamic nuclear polarization.Comment: 10 pages, including the figures coming in uuencoded compressed tar

Spin Structure of the Proton from Polarized Inclusive Deep-Inelastic Muon-Proton Scattering
We have measured the spin-dependent structure function in inclusive
