An investigation into linearity with cumulative emissions of the climate and carbon cycle response in HadCM3LC

We investigate the extent to which global mean temperature, precipitation, and the carbon cycle are constrained by cumulative carbon emissions throughout four experiments with a fully coupled climate-carbon cycle model. The two paired experiments adopt contrasting, idealised approaches to climate change mitigation at different action points this century, with total emissions exceeding two trillion tonnes of carbon in the later pair. Their initially diverging cumulative emissions trajectories cross after several decades, before diverging again. We find that their global mean temperatures are, to first order, linear with cumulative emissions, though regional differences in temperature of up to 1.5K exist when cumulative emissions of each pair coincide. Interestingly, although the oceanic precipitation response scales with cumulative emissions, the global precipitation response does not, due to a decrease in precipitation over land above cumulative emissions of around one trillion tonnes of carbon (TtC). Most carbon fluxes and stores are less well constrained by cumulative emissions as they reach two trillion tonnes. The opposing mitigation approaches have different consequences for the Amazon rainforest, which affects the linearity with which the carbon cycle responds to cumulative emissions. Averaged over the two fixed-emissions experiments, the transient response to cumulative carbon emissions (TCRE) is 1.95 K TtC-1, at the upper end of the IPCC’s range of 0.8-2.5 K TtC-1

From supported membranes to tethered vesicles: lipid bilayers destabilisation at the main transition

We report results concerning the destabilisation of supported phospholipid bilayers in a well-defined geometry. When heating up supported phospholipid membranes deposited on highly hydrophilic glass slides from room temperature (i.e. with lipids in the gel phase), unbinding was observed around the main gel to fluid transition temperature of the lipids. It lead to the formation of relatively monodisperse vesicles, of which most remained tethered to the supported bilayer. We interpret these observations in terms of a sharp decrease of the bending rigidity modulus $\kappa$ in the transition region, combined with a weak initial adhesion energy. On the basis of scaling arguments, we show that our experimental findings are consistent with this hypothesis.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figure

Lieu universel de la reproduction démographique et instance de première d'intégration des individus à la vie sociale, la famille est au coeur des changements qui affectent l'ensemble des sociétés. En Afrique sub-saharienne, elle se trouve confrontée à des contraintes croissantes, souvent contradictoires, où se mêlent les règles des divers systèmes de parenté, les législations modernes encore imprécises et peu adaptées aux différents contextes culturels, et les effets de plus en plus sévères de la crise économique et des politiques d'ajustement. Durement affectées par ces forces multiples, les familles africaines sont aussi des acteurs du changement par leur capacité à innover et interpréter les normes en vigueur. Dépassant les apologies de la "grande et solidaire famille africaine" et les approches théoriques, si souvent contredites par les faits, cet ouvrage, articulé en quatre parties et dix sept chapitres propose une réflexion critique au sein de quelques disciplines (démographie, ethnologie, économie, histoire) et une lecture pluridisciplinaire de la diversité des évolutions et des dynamiques familiales. L'évolution des ménages et groupes domestiques, la différenciation des cycles de vie familiaux et des statuts individuels (concernant les femmes chefs de ménage et les enfants confiés, notamment), la multiplicité des arrangements et modes de vie résidentiels, la transformation des pratiques de solidarité sous l'effet de la crise et du sida, l'impact des législations et l'urbanisation sont autant de thèmes abordés ici pour mieux comprendre la complexité et la dynamique contemporaine des familles africaines. Transformation alimentaire du manioc

Cet ouvrage rassemble 56 contributions qui auraient dû être présentées au séminaire-atelier international sur la transformation alimentaire du manioc initialement prévu en novembre 1993 à Brazzaville (Congo). Ce séminaire n'a pas pu avoir lieu. Les articles retenus sont très diversifiés tant par leur provenance que par leur objet de recherche. Ils illustrent des travaux effectués dans 11 pays d'Afrique, 21 pays d'Amérique latine, 1 pays d'Asie et 2 pays européens, et tous contribuent à une meilleur connaissance des modes de transformation et d'utilisation du manioc. L'ouvrage est divisé en 5 chapitres : 1 Utilisation du manioc dans différents contextes des pays tropicaux; 2 Bioconversion du manioc : études des mécanismes; 3 Influence des opérations unitaires sur les caractéristiques physico-chimiques et sur la qualité des produits; 4 Amélioration des procédés traditionnels et présentation de procédés nouveaux; 5 Perspectives et Conclusion
