The MultiSite Spectroscopic Telescope campaign: 2m spectroscopy of the V361 Hya variable PG1605+072
We present results and analysis for the 2m spectroscopic part of the
MultiSite Spectroscopic Telescope (MSST) campaign undertaken in May/June 2002.
The goal of the project was to observe the pulsating subdwarf B star PG1605+072
simultaneously in velocity and photometry and to resolve as many of the >50
known modes as possible, which will allow a detailed asteroseismological
analysis. We have obtained over 150 hours of spectroscopy, leading to an
unprecedented noise level of only 207m/s. We report here the detection of 20
frequencies in velocity, with two more likely just below our detection
threshold. In particular, we detect 6 linear combinations, making PG1605+072
only the second star known to show such frequencies in velocity. We investigate
the phases of these combinations and their parent modes and find relationships
between them that cannot be easily understood based on current theory. These
observations, when combined with our simultaneous photometry, should allow
asteroseismology of this most complicated of sdB pulsators.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in A&A; Figure 1 at

Fast Monte Carlo simulations and singularities in the probability distributions of non-equilibrium systems
A numerical technique is introduced that reduces exponentially the time
required for Monte Carlo simulations of non-equilibrium systems. Results for
the quasi-stationary probability distribution in two model systems are compared
with the asymptotically exact theory in the limit of extremely small noise
intensity. Singularities of the non-equilibrium distributions are revealed by

Familial aggregation of maxillary lateral incisor agenesis
In spite of recent developments, data regarding the genes responsible for the less severe forms of hypodontia are still scarce and controversial. This study addressed the hypothesis that agenesis of maxillary lateral incisors (MLIA) is a distinct type of hypodontia, by evaluating its familial aggregation and the occurrence of other types of ageneses or microdontia in probands' relatives. Sixty-two probands with MLIA were identified, and information was collected on 142 first-degree relatives. Relative risk (RR) was calculated and compared by re-assessment of data previously published for the Swedish, Utah, and Israeli populations, for the same trait. A RR of 15 was obtained in the Portuguese, 16 in the Swedish, 12 in Utah, and 5 in the Israeli population. Our results support a significant familial aggregation of MLIA, show that MLIA almost never segregates with other forms of agenesis, and suggest that microdontia of maxillary lateral incisors is part of the same phenotype.The individuals who took part in this study are acknowledged. "The dearest of our possessions": applying Floridi's information privacy concept in models of information behavior and information literacy
This conceptual paper argues for the value of an approach to privacy in the digital information environment informed by Luciano Floridi's philosophy of information and information ethics. This approach involves achieving informational privacy, through the features of anonymity and obscurity, through an optimal balance of ontological frictions. This approach may be used to modify models for information behavior and for information literacy, giving them a fuller and more effective coverage of privacy issues in the infosphere. For information behavior, the Information Seeking and Communication Model, and the Information Grounds conception, are most appropriate for this purpose. Efficient Dynamic Importance Sampling of Rare Events in One Dimension
Exploiting stochastic path integral theory, we obtain \emph{by simulation}
substantial gains in efficiency for the computation of reaction rates in
one-dimensional, bistable, overdamped stochastic systems. Using a well-defined
measure of efficiency, we compare implementations of ``Dynamic Importance
Sampling'' (DIMS) methods to unbiased simulation. The best DIMS algorithms are
shown to increase efficiency by factors of approximately 20 for a
barrier height and 300 for , compared to unbiased simulation. The
gains result from close emulation of natural (unbiased), instanton-like
crossing events with artificially decreased waiting times between events that
are corrected for in rate calculations. The artificial crossing events are
generated using the closed-form solution to the most probable crossing event
described by the Onsager-Machlup action. While the best biasing methods require
the second derivative of the potential (resulting from the ``Jacobian'' term in
the action, which is discussed at length), algorithms employing solely the
first derivative do nearly as well. We discuss the importance of
one-dimensional models to larger systems, and suggest extensions to

Ethical issues in implementation research: a discussion of the problems in achieving informed consent
Background: Improved quality of care is a policy objective of health care systems around the world. Implementation research is the scientific study of methods to promote the systematic uptake of clinical research findings into routine clinical practice, and hence to reduce inappropriate
care. It includes the study of influences on healthcare professionals' behaviour and methods to enable them to use research findings more effectively. Cluster randomized trials represent the optimal design for evaluating the effectiveness of implementation strategies. Various codes of
medical ethics, such as the Nuremberg Code and the Declaration of Helsinki inform medical research, but their relevance to cluster randomised trials in implementation research is unclear. This paper discusses the applicability of various ethical codes to obtaining consent in cluster trials in implementation research.
Discussion: The appropriate application of biomedical codes to implementation research is not obvious. Discussion of the nature and practice of informed consent in implementation research cluster trials must consider the levels at which consent can be sought, and for what purpose it can be sought. The level at which an intervention is delivered can render the idea of patient level
consent meaningless. Careful consideration of the ownership of information, and rights of access to and exploitation of data is required. For health care professionals and organizations, there is a balance between clinical freedom and responsibility to participate in research.
Summary: While ethical justification for clinical trials relies heavily on individual consent, for
implementation research aspects of distributive justice, economics, and political philosophy underlie the debate. Societies may need to trade off decisions on the choice between individualized consent and valid implementation research. We suggest that social sciences codes could usefully inform the consideration of implementation research by members of Research Ethics Committees
